He was NEVER underrated as a bass player. He was always seen as an innovative bass player throughout his time with the Beatles and Wings in the 60s and 70s, while winning awards for his playing. Also, bassists then and now have constantly named him as their main inspiration.

McCartney is such a great song writer that his skills as a bass player are often overlooked when they shouldn't be at all. "Coming Up" was a number one hit around the world back in 1980. The truth behind the jokey part of the video is that McCartney played all the instruments on the song. Linda helped with the vocals, but the rest was all Paul. The guitar riff reminds me of Fela Kuti's work from the seventies. The guy on keyboard is supposed to be the guy from Sparks.

The live version is the DEFINITIVE version. Even the Bass is better and more driving. This sounds "lite" and new-wavey in comparison. The drums, the horn section, everything is better on the live version. Although Paul DID play all the instruments on this one. EDIT: The live version we're talking about is from his Best Of compilation "All The Best", not some random video footage on KZbin. Though I'm sure it's probably on KZbin: Audio Only.

@@JasonSmith-jr7jh The live version was the B-side of the single… Wings had performed it during their final tour in late 1979. The performance was from a concert in Glasgow. When they released the album version as a single, they put the live performance on the B-side… But American DJs preferred the live version and it wound up becoming a hit in the states. That’s why the live version was included on All the Best (where I first heard it) rather than the studio version.

This is the song which prompted John Lennon to resume his musical career. Legend says that he heard the song and went, "The bastard wrote something catchy again!" So he booked a studio and started recording what became the "Double Fantasy" album. But he also went one further, contacting Paul and making plans to hook up with him, so they could start working together again, and he also wanted to go to Liverpool, see his family. Sadly, thanks to a deranged murderer, that never ended up happening.

In the video Paul is impersonating different musicians. The guitarist with the glasses is Hank Marvin from the Shadows. The keyboardist is Ron Mael from the Sparks. The bassist is of course Beatlemania era Paul. The drummer is loosely based on Zep's John Bonham. The name of the band, Plastic Macs, is both an homage to John Lennon's Plastic Ono Band and a play on words since Plastic Macs are what the Brits call raincoats and of course it could also refer to fake versions of Paul which we see in the video. This was put on McCartney II, his first post-Wings album in which Paul played all the instruments just as he did on McCartney, which was his first post-Beatles album. Wings actually did perform this live however during the Concert for Kampuchea in 1979.

The song that was driving John Lennon crazy in ‘79-‘80 every time he heard it coming on the radio. There is documentary evidence that this song was pushing John towards writing with his old songwriting partner. Then tragedy struck outside the Dakota on December 8, 1980, robbing us forever from what might have been.

If you like the bass you should check out Paul’s performance of Coming Up on top of the Ed Sullivan Theater marquee in NYC. Same theater the Beatles made their American debut in 1964. His bass is still the same one he used on that first Beatles performance. It was done a number of years after the song was originally released, so his bass line had more time to develop.

The US liked the live version better and most European countries preferred the electronic version. I personally like the electronic version more. The live version was from a concert in Glasgow, Scotland. I have a bootleg of the entire concert and they really cleaned up the live version in comparison to the original. A couple of people have uploaded the bootleg of the concert. All of the musicians potrayed are different musicians with the exception of Linda and her partner. I can't remember the name of the guy he is potraying on keyboards though but he was in a British punk band. Paul said in an interview the "coming up" meant positvity and that everyone should strive for a better future which is a verse in the song.

I think his idea (patience and willingness) to video himself in all those guises remains a high point for his video-creativity. Listening to this dull song really shows after about the 4th time, but it's a fun song for me to revisit once a decade. And the video's creatively (like Harrison's WHEN WE WERE FAB) really isn't matched by too many artists. (And Jamel really needs to see George's WHEN WE WERE FAB with some serious history reading of that era. Audiences without some good knowledge of the '60s and early '70s will not appreciate all the cleverness George embued in that video. They won't get the gags. It'd be sorta like only listening to the movie AIRPLANE with a blindfold - audiences will miss too many jokes) I wouldn't credit a link to the Talking Heads as much as DEVO.

"I'm coming up" is probably a referral to his flattened career at that point. Many people found his records 'going flat' for most of the '70s and beyond. In fact, after RAM and BAND ON THE RUN, the rest of his albums because a Single Song collection with few (if any) hidden gems like he was famous for in his previous work. I always took I'M COMING UP as his HOPE that he was going to re-emerge as a constant hitmaker. Uh. No. "Good grief, Paul - you can practically own half of the top hits already - give other folks a chance to score a few hits on their own!!" His career's last 5 decades aren't littered with constant number ones but - so what? He's still prolific. And still going... I don't think there's any other composer from 1962 onward that is still coming out with all new material on albums.
