I had no idea any of this footage existed, thank you so much for sharing! I was just getting into the Beatles around the time of 9/11, and the original broadcast of this concert was the first time I got to see "current" Paul McCartney perform. Driving Rain remains one of my favorite albums of his solo career, and it is so cool to see him working on the tunes with Abe and Rusty (who could have guessed they'd be playing with him for the next TWENTY YEARS?!) and Gabe Dixon (who apparently had the organ part on Let It Be so solid that Paul was reluctant to let Billy Joel sit in -- what a cool conversation to capture). Also, Paul still sounds pretty good for a now 80-year-old, but hearing his voice here is unreal. He just rips into I'm Down like he's still in his 20s.

The concert was a huge help to get me through one of the most painful moments ever. 9/11 is still one of the Top Ten events of my life. Thanks Paul

@@qasanoba that's Gabe Dixon on keys -- he played on the Driving Rain record with Abe and Rusty (some really killer, soulful electric piano and organ parts). He opted out of the tour to focus on his singer-songwriter career, so Wix returned from the 90s lineup. As of 2019, Gabe replaced the late, great Kofi Burbridge as the keyboard player for Tedeschi Trucks Band. I'm a big TTB fan so it was really cool to see Gabe come back around into my field of view!

What a weird set to be playing at a 911 Memorial Concert...
@mikestevenson5764 жыл бұрын
Wasn't a Memorial concert. It was supposed to be a spirit-lifter for the city in general and first responders in particular.

Hard to believe Gabe Dixon turned down Paul's offer to tour with him in 2002...

Gabe made the right call. Today, after 20 years, performing the same songs, even a classic like "Hey Jude," gets old. I am a huge fan of McCartney's solo catalogue, and I've seen him several times in concert, but I find 75% of his concerts boring now. So many other songs he could've done ... when he still had his voice.

I'm reading some very negative, frankly awful comments. I'm frankly disgusted by them. This man gives himself, pro bono, by the way, to help heal the city and people who suffered from 9/11 and instead of being grateful and appreciative, you drag him through the mud. WHAT'S WRONG WITH YOU?!?!? You should be ashamed of yourselves.

He coudnt chose two worst songs to play that evening. Im Down (my fuckin God...) and Freedom. His worst song ever. And some other new songs no one gave a shit. Cmon Paul. Play Let It Be, Hey Jude and Imagine and you would have been the most special performance of the night.
@kylehallacappellaman34353 жыл бұрын
"Cmon Paul" Really? First, do you think Paul will see/read your comments? Second, do you think you are in a position to have determined what he should have done?! Twenty years ago, no less! I see so many comments on social media upbraiding people of McCartney's stature. And yet these social commentators CANNOT HAVE A CLUE IN THE WORLD about what should have been done by the star performer in the given circumstance. McCartney has written hundreds of songs and played LIVE to millions of people in his career. And yet YOU really know what he should have done! HA!

@@vitorbastos123 I agree with you - Paul has the greatest songwriting catalogue in the world and his song choices were just so off! His brother John Lennon died on those very streets. What a disgrace. And that band was a bit shit too hey?
