Thanks for the swatching, discussion and demo. I enjoyed some of the rare pigments like PV42 and PG16. I am bit put off because there is no open stock -and the info materials are not available in any language I speak. For the same money I can get 24 FULL pan Rosa Gallery set, which comes in a nice tin and are available open stock. I have a 12 HP set by Paul Rubens, which is OK but would not buy again. It is also confusing when a brand launches "generations" of colours, with new items coming out, while old ones are no longer available. This lack of consistency, is a bummer for me as an artist. Anyway...thanks again for showcasing this new colours. I always enjoy your commentary while swatching.

technically paul rubens does sell openstock in china but they're just not (or not yet) available in other parts of the world. probably due to demand. as a consumer, i think it's still much better than brands like davinci that don't make their paints available anywhere other than america (that i know of at least). no shade to davinci or my fellow american viewers, just discussing availability here. and i agree with your analysis and choices, if you were able to get rosa then that's a great choice too. but for those who don't have limited availability, i'd still say paul rubens is a good choice. and i sooooo agree on the confusion of 'generations' and consistency in availability. that's why i didn't bother mentioning that at all here and just wanted to focus on the current set, here and now.

I've ordered the set a while ago, still waiting but very happy to see the beautiful swatches here it's always a great way to get a first impression. PR176 Perylene maroon is like PR206 Quinacridone maroon a pigment which can make a brown or a dark red color. That's the reason why Winsor and Newton professional used it as a replacement for PR206. They offer the red version since 2022 (after the PR206 was being discontinued) in their permanent Alizarin crimson. But yes, most brands offer only the brown version which is sad because there aren't many lightfast dark red pigments. Wish you a wonderful day 💜

I bought this the day I saw it. I have their pink 48 and their other 24 pan in a gem palette and the 36 tubes. I love them all I think for sketchbook, studies and every day watercolor it’s an excellent brand. I’ve personally always been happy with their products. I use W&N pro, Sennelier and Schmincke for any originals I might sell but for a lot of my work I scan it before selling or making stickers so I’m mostly looking for ease of use and enjoyment over pigment and lightfastness. I don’t think people should let lightfastness be the end all be all for buying art products- especially in this price range.
@PaintinHiding
@PaintinHiding 3 ай бұрын
agreed! most of my work are in sketchbooks so lightfast isn’t my biggest concern either. i think sometimes people just get caught up with “oh it’s more expensive because it’s artist grade, meaning it’s the best of the best because it’s highly lightfast” and just expect all brands to be highly lightfast if it’s labelled as artist grade.

The sparkles on the paper are the sizing!! Alum is one of the products used as a sizing on rice paper and it leaves those sparkly bits on it! BUT only when the paper is heavily sized, like for Gong Bi work. Otherwise the alum doesn't build up and clump into sparkly pieces.

I have this paper and the sparkles are deliberate rather than a by product of sizing as far as I can tell. It’s a strange concept and I’m not sure why you’d want the sparkles, personally…. Takes layers very well, but doesn’t lift nicely

The PV42 looks great! I have one in a pan from Schmincke (it came in my square palette), but its quite weak tinting. I haven't tried the Daniel Smith version. I wish instead of the PY3 that they had included a PY150.I like the Brown Umber shade, though I wish it were single pigment! They were good at first, but it seems they have really improved the palettes over the years.

@@PaintinHiding I probably won't buy this set, because I'm more of a tube gal, but it does seem absolutely great for someone starting out. Seems they take feedback and continuously improve their products. I do have Paul Rubens soft and oil pastels and they are both great and affordable. I'm impressed that they disclose the pigments and use good lightfast ones in the pastels! Because to my surprise, a lot of soft pastel makers don't tell you what they use, and/or they use ones that are sketchy lightfastness (at least in watercolor). The downside of those products is that the color selections of the sets are a bit weird, and no open stock of course, but I fell in love with soft pastels because of Rubens!
