There's nothing like the feeling of listening to one of your favorite songs on a very resolving system, only to find out it actually sounds like crap. That's happened to me many times.

It depends on what priorities are gone after, when upgrading. These detail chasers can end up with just about anything as far as sound is concerned. Those who chase purity, naturalness, low coloration usually end up with a beautiful sound, that doesn't make their average recording unlistenable. The funny thing is that the clarity that wasn't their main priority, ends up falling right in line. And the tonal beauty is truly deserving of the clarity.

That's the tragedy of a high end system. So much of my favorite music is recorded like crap so it's not enjoyable on a resolving system. Because of this I've moved away from going for ultra detailed equipment. Yeah, I'm missing something and it may be a bit colored, but it makes my music listenable. Otherwise, I only end up listening to music that sounds good instead of music I love.

I understand where you're coming from, but that's a really bad generalization, and a system like that isn't HIGH END. Expensive, but not exactly quality hi-fi.

@maxhirsch7035

I rarely buy recordings primarily for how they sound, but my music tends to be better recorded, so my high-end system tends to 'favor it.' This issue of music collection or music listening habit, however, may affect what strengths or weaknesses or how high in the fidelity chain someone assembling a system would want to go... The classical recordings, jazz, certain classic rock recordings, certain soundtracks, traditional/semi-traditional 'world music' that make up the bulk of my collection typically sound great to me on great equipment (I imagine folk and bluegrass usually do, too), but if someone predominantly favors hip-hop, rap, pop, edm, etc (can't speak to country, I have almost none of it), a 'more neutral' and/or revealing setup just may not be for them. Or, if they have sufficient resources/space/opportunity, they could set up two systems in two different rooms- one favoring crappy recordings, and one favoring better ones.

If I don't spend some time listening to music, especially on vinyl records, watching a movie or reading a book late at night each day, I feel unsettled. I need to decompress with music, reading and movies each day.

The shoemakers daughter syndrome. As I suspected, Paul get's to be captured by the system frequently, but little or no time to simply use it for personal enjoyment. We also know he doesn't have an audio system at home, but enjoys his home theatre system. All understandable, but kind of surprising at the same time. I went through something similar with travelling which I enjoy. I travelled so much on business, that when I got a vacation, I just wanted to have a break from planes and hotels.

In fairness he doesn’t have a ridiculously high end 2 channel system at home and anyone who can enjoy car audio when they’re used to high end gear doesn’t actually have particularly high standards at all. I can’t even listen to music in any vehicle no matter how good the system because all I can think about the entire time is how it sounds like garbage in comparison to my 2 channel home system.

@@shannonmiller5648 I have a nice Bose sound system in my car and a Denon/Totem system in my living room. Neither get used. But I do use an audiophile kind of system in a dedicated room. I am just surprised that it was not a priority for him. Daily demos of the same tracks with visitors or testing an engineering sample is not the same as sitting down and getting immersed in the sound.

@4:42 "Hope that answered your question." Paul, you did not answer Todd's questions. You explained how you spend time with all types of music and job related activities and exposing visitors to high-end music, etc. You never said how long you sit down and listen as an enthusiast, and not as an engineer. You never said whether you listen to your trusted songs, over and over, or splurge into new content. The above were Todd's questions. How many times a week do you take "private time" and listen? How many hours, on average, do you spend listening during a day's "private time"? Do you listen to your trusted songs, or other content? What is the split? Going into the other aspects that you talked about is fine. But please be sure to keep the guest's questions in mind and provide answers for the guest (Todd) and your youtube audience.

@@edgarortiz4681 Oh yeah, except you're wrong if it doesn't turn out that way. I'm fortunate to tend to favor very-well recorded music and strongly enjoy it, so if I carefully choose and set up equipment and manage my expectations (not expecting it to sound quite 'live'), I typically enjoy the music even more. That being said, if one has to choose between buying music and buying equipment, music should be the priority.

@@maxhirsch7035 That doesn't apply to all the terrific music that was "poorly recorded" now does it. If you only listen to audiofool recordings you are missing out on 95% of the good stuff that's out there. That is a poor trade off for true music lovers.

😂😂 I guess the bottom line is if you’re going to listen to bad recordings, you shouldn’t be demoing 30k speakers.. should probably be reserved for band and orchestral music using many acoustic instruments, and then only well recorded. 👨🏻 I have some good equipment, but I also have equipment that allows my not so stellar recordings to sound “better” than they actually are . The goal is getting it to sound acceptable so that you can enjoy the music and forget about the imperfections. I’ll even use EQ if I have to!🫨 oh my god, did he just say that !! 😂😂
@maxhirsch7035
@maxhirsch7035 Жыл бұрын
It depends- beyond band and orchestral, well-recorded smaller classical and jazz ensembles, and to a lesser extent, classic rock (as long as you're willing to be a bit looser on 'verisimilitude') can sound great on 30K speakers. Electronica and soundtracks, for example, which in the studio often are not recorded in an attempt to mimic live music-making in any way, can also sound great on very high-end systems, because such pieces can be well-recorded, and listeners aren't primed to expect more of a simulacrum of 'liveness' from them. Your choice of two systems is a wise one!
