In 1979, when I was 7 years old, my uncle Maher, who is a musician/artist, made a recording of me singing "hop on the bus gus, no need to discuss much..." while he played the the music on an Oud, which is an Arabic guitar. I'm 48 years old now, and still have that recording.

I heard this song 30yrs ago when I was a child. I was sick, had chicken pox , and was listening to an oldies station when I went to bed. It's one of those inconsequential moments in your life that for some reason never forget. The "Hop on the bus Gus, don't need to discuss much" line has stuck in my head my entire life, having never heard the song again after that night. Finally, 30yrs later the line popped into my head again and I finally searched and found this song. I feel like I was teleported back to my childhood bedroom as a 7yr old kid as soon as this song started playing. The human mind is a funny thing sometimes.

Awww! Love your story! How about this... my brothers name is Gus! We sang this song growing up and I was so happy his name was in it. Haha. We are in our 50s now and we have a ministry together. The great part of my story is... we own a bus and my brother drives it. When we do ministry concerts or go to events, I yell out the bus door to my brother... "HOP ON THE BUS GUS!" Everyone laughs! I think we have this record from back in the day. Anyway, just wanted to tell you all that. Glad you recovered from the chicken pox back then. Now I am off to search for the song A MILLION TO ONE by the Donny Osmand! Haha! You know it? Peace and a prayer to you! God bless! Lynne🍃💜🍃

@@lynnecarnivale5085 .... Your story is sweet too! I found it because I came to listen to this song to refresh my memory ... because I'm in the process of "re-writing" the lyrics for a parody song - "Fifty Ways to Flee Corona!" I figure if we don't keep laughing through times of trouble, we'll succumb to all the fear-mongering. So far, the verse with your brother's name in it goes like this: "DON'T hop on the bus, Gus, Be sure you DON'T touch much, Disinfect all your keys, Lee, And keep yourself free! Just stay home and chill, Jill, And head for the hills, Bill, DON'T go to your job, Bob, And DON'T touch a door knob! My mom used to turn this song up when it would come on the radio and sing along like she had a memory instilled deeply within her that was important, or dear to her. The last time I broke it off with a girl before meeting my wife of 12 years now I walked to my car, turned the key, and this song played upon the radio. A song and memory unlocked to me as of recent that I had forgotten. My moms been gone for 12 years now and I never had the chance to ask her about this song, or so many other things, but she didn’t leave until she met the woman I still love today. Anytime this song plays I can’t help but ride down memory lane of her singing to me going down those back roads with the corn growing tall and the sun shining brightly as the innocence of childhood shone inside me at the time.

In college, I took ASL classes. At the end of the semester you had to pick a song to interpret in sign language. I feel like this would have been a REALLY fun song to pick. My teacher was deaf person, but she used to be hearing. She lost it while in college for music. And after coping with losing music as she knew it she became a teacher and to stay in touch with the thing she loved she had us do these projects. I get stage fright but she used to say to us: it’s not about you. This project isn’t about you it’s about allowing a deaf person like me to experience music. And because this song tells a story I think she would have loved us picking it.

Lyrics The problem is all inside your head, she said to me The answer is easy if you take it logically I'd like to help you in your struggle to be free There must be fifty ways to leave your lover She said it's really not my habit to intrude FURTHERMORE I hope my meaning won't be lost or misconstrued So I repeat myself, at the risk of being cruel There must be fifty ways to leave your lover, fifty ways to leave your lover Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free She said it grieves me so to see you in such pain I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again I said, I appreciate that, then would you please explain about the fifty ways She said, why don't we both just sleep on it tonight And I believe, in the morning you'll begin to see the light And then she kissed me and I realized she probably was right There must be fifty ways to leave your lover, fifty ways to leave your lover Just slip out the back, Jack, make a new plan, Stan Don't need to be coy, Roy, just listen to me Hop on the bus, Gus, don't need to discuss much Just drop off the key, Lee, and get yourself free

This song was really ahead of its time, in that it acknowledged that men could be stuck in toxic relationships as well as women and also had the right to tell someone and leave. Also, it's fun and catchy as hell.
@misterbayshawn3 жыл бұрын
I don't think it was ahead of it's time. To me it feels perfectly from the time it was released
@DrZaius31413 жыл бұрын
It's about a guy cheating on his spouse. Nothing suggests anything toxic, nothing suggests his spouse is to blame at all. The only thing we hear is that he is talking to his mistress who wants to convince him to end that relationship and stop two-timing. So not really "ahead of its time", just a basic criticism of age old behaviour.

I remember hearing this song on the radio when I was a little kid. When I was 14 I started playing drums. This was the first beat my teacher taught me. He had me read music and I was in love with the rudiments. He wrote out the drum part for the verses. The chorus is simpler but grooves so good. My introduction to Steve Gadd and Jazz/Fusion. Paul Simon is a phenomenal musician and songwriter. He is all about groove and different world rhythms. 33 years later and I still play drums

This song means so much to me. I am about to 29 this Halloween... But when I was in highschool, it was like my "bestfriend" song with my homie. We just loved it so much like all classic music. But we were particularly fond of this one... Unfortunately my bestfriend passed away coming to my house my senior year in a car accident. But you know what was weird? Is that this song came on the radio when I was driving to the funeral. Of course I busted into tears. At the same time though. It kinda felt like he was reassuring me that he was okay and in a better place. Still to this day.. This song makes me think about everything. Why he was taken so young. All I can come up with is the old saying - the good always die young. Or something to that affect. Because Dusty was a spectacular person. Never in my 29 years met anymore more genuine, caring, talented, and badass as him. Anyway. Hope this doesn't make anyone sad, its not the point. I just had to honestly vent. Even if it is to the "open air" like this text box.

I believe loved ones can communicate if they wished problem is we fear. My mother passed and the next night my sister saw an apparition starting to appear in front of her and closed her eyes and said no. So i laughed at this and yelled at the ceiling that mom could visit me whenever. That next night i was awoken by someone squeezing my leg. I freaked. We will always pass it off as coincidental because we dont 100% believe and fear. But there is life after death, that im positive of..
