Don't want to sound like a smart ass, but Simon does borrow a lot from Bach. However, what he is borrowing from is Bach's interpretation of a centuries old folk song.

Feel so blessed to have Paul Simon music in my life. This song is one of his best, and this performance portrays his absolute perfect music structures, melody and sublime lyrics. How beautiful is listening to Paul singing a beautiful melody compared to the modern troubadours reaching for uncomfortable high notes that don't need to be there. Perfect.

American Tune" is a song by the American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was the third single from his third studio album, There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973), released on Columbia Records. The song, a meditation on the American experience, is based on the melody of the hymn "O Sacred Head, Now Wounded".

Paul Gerhardt; Hans Hassler; J.S. Bach (who wrote a famous arrangement of it), and finally Paul Simon... My brother and I recorded a Christmas album years ago that put yet another spin on this exquisite melody; we sang "O Little Town Of Bethlehem" to the tune of "O Sacred Head". They are metrically identical lyrics, and the juxtaposition of a song about the birth of Christ with one about his death is very moving...
