The title has its origin in a chicken-and-egg dish called "Mother and Child Reunion" that Simon saw on a Chinese restaurant's menu. Wikipedia

I love this song so much. Lots of memories of it. Like you said, he successfully integrated so many styles into his music. For an upbeat gospel style one there is "Gone at Last" with the late great Phoebe Snow (and the Jessy Dixon Singers). It was a hit on the "Still Crazy After all These Years" album but then went kind of underground. .

His first album is great front to back. Try the song on it that follows Mother and Child Reunion, "Duncan." "Couple in the next room bound to win a prize/They be goin' at it all night long." The man can turn a phrase.

Sweet! I was a little kid when this song came out and I remember hearing it playing on the radio station my parents listened to. So it's an early musical memory for me and that's probably why I like reggae so much. For musical context, 1972 was the same year that Johnny Nash took his cover of Bob Marley's "Stir It Up" to the top forty in the US, and a year before Bob Marley and the Wailers released "I Shot The Sheriff", which Eric Clapton took to the top of the charts the year after that. PS. For some golden era hip-hop, check out Run-DMC, Public Enemy, Boogie Down Productions, Erik B. & Rakim, Queen Latifah, LL Cool J, Digital Underground, Wu-Tang Clan, Naughty by Nature, and of course, N.W.A. YMMV.

I guess not too many musicians would use that reggae sound back in 1972,except of course Jamaican musicians. The bass and percussion are really great.Mr.Simon´s ears are always open enough topick up any interesting sound no matter where it may come from

In 1972 Paul Simon went to Kingston Jamaica to record this song as a ska song. And they told him 'ska is over. Reggae is where it is at." He had never heard the word 'reggae' before but he recorded the backing track in that new style, then put the vocals over the top back in New York. Backing vocals are by Cissy Houston, Whitney's mother.

Never would have thought of comparing Bob Marley to Simon … I hear it now though. I see Wikipedia classifies this song as Reggae Rock and cites Simon was influenced by Jamaican artists like Jimmy Cliff. The song title was inspired by Simon seeing an Egg and Chicken dish in a Chinese Restaurant listed as “Mother and Child Reunion”. Wikipedia also says the song was inspired by the loss of a pet dog.

I always thought the Mother and Child Reunion was a Chinese stir-fry dish. You know, with egg and chicken.
