I saw him play about 25-30 games in person in the Orange Bowl. Not just the best receiver, but the best offensive football player I ever saw play the game. One of his lesser known qualities was that he was not only the best catching the ball, but he was also the best blocking receiver, so brutally effective that they changed the rules of the game to make his preferred technique, the crack back block, illegal.

I didn’t know that about the blocking! That’s awesome!

@@PlayActionFootball @The Football Diary He was the smallest offensive starter on the Dolphins. He was listed as 6 foot and 188 lbs, but he admittedly was actually two inches shorter and 15 lbs lighter in his prime. HIs prime years were all after age 30. He played the entire perfect Superbowl againts the Redskins with a dislocated shoulder. He couldnt even lift that arm over his head, but was just as effective primarily as a decoy. He missed his second entire season, but otherwise only missed 8 starts in his other 12 NFL seasons. If he hadn't played for the most efficient and effective running teams in league history and played in the era of 16 game seasons instead of 14, his already incredible stats and records would be hard to believe.

You have to remember. Football was primarily a running game when Paul played. This guy was nearly impossible to cover, and he scored on a high percentage of his receptions.
@bjmartin1215 Жыл бұрын
Statistics won't show it, but Paul Warfield was, the best WR ever. The game has made it much easier for QBs and Wide Receivers to accumulate big numbers.

My all-time favorite Wide Receiver. I even purchased a Browns #42.

Saw him play in person for four years. So smooth. NOBODY ever got a good shot on him. World class speed and tough as nails as a blocker. Would be just as good today, maybe better.
@1983jblack Жыл бұрын
Everyone said his movement was almost liquid. He was a home run threat in the truest sense putting fear in defenses. Dallas may have figured him out in Super Bowl VI, but couldn't any other time whether he was with the Browns or Dolphins
@dolphingoosby71953 жыл бұрын
The most complete receiver ever! Don't believe me? Just go ask the great Mel Blount. Think about this for moment, Warfield played most of his career on run first teams, he caught 427 passes in his career and still had 86 touchdowns!

In the 1973 season in which they won their second consecutive Super Bowl (Shula said it was a better team than the undefeated one) Warfield caught only 29 passes but 11 for touchdowns. Incredible stat. Those Dolphin teams only threw it on 3rd and long. Like Lombardi's Packers.

He wasn't underrated. In fact, he was considered the GOAT of NFL WRs during the era he played. It was just that he played so long ago and many from younger generations don't know of his legacy.

To this day, my belief as one of top three greatest wide receivers ever and definitely the most graceful! Sorry Lynn Swann, Randy Moss, Lance Acworth and even Mr. Jerry Rice. Paul Warfield defined the phrase “poetry in motion”!
@carljefferygivings7993 жыл бұрын
I'm a Paul Warfield fan. I remember a Monday Night Football game. They play the Bears, the DB's gave him a 20 yard cushion on every play. That is respect with a healthy dose of fear. Lance Alworth, Bullet Bob Hayes and Paul Warfield came into the league about the same time. The bump and run was basically invented to stop them. Now you know! Peace
@beaux25852 жыл бұрын
Not sure who would ever underrate Warfield considering his HoF credentials. I know that there are many fans today that may not know of the past greats of the NFL but ignorance of it would be the only way one would think Warfield was not elite. For those younger people just think of a combination of Larry Fitzgerald and Terrell Owens and you will know how good Paul Warfield was.

Loved to watch him, I wish I could remember which game it was, but I saw him , greatest catch I think ever, picture this, ball overthrown, very back of the end zone on the edge of out of bounds, he stops, on his tip toes reaches up extending his right arm and body as far as it will go leaning forward and hauling it in with his middle finger pulls it in and does a face plant and never so much as bobble the ball for a touchdown !this man was Amazing! He was playing for Miami at the time.

Yes, a greatly feared receiver. I wouldn't say underrated at all. He would have retired with 150 tds or more in the post-1978 Era.
