I’d assume the numbers probably went like this. Forsaken massive but still not enough as Taken King or D2. Shadowkeep nowhere near as many as Forsaken. Beyond Light even less than Shadowkeep. Witch Queen highest they’ve had in D2 (at least pre-order wise) but then people don’t stick around for seasons and so they lost more money on Witch Queen. Lightfall sales were amazing but then they literally had thousands refunding the game and nobody played through the seasons. Final Shape doesn’t even sell to the number of Lightfall pre-refunds… It’s a never ending cycle because the fans are jaded, there’s no new cycle for new players to come into the game with and they waste money on things fans didn’t even ask for (genuinely who wanted New Light and Cosmodrome back??). And I hate to say it but Raids and Dungeons are terrible investments, 90% of the playerbase never touches raids and they are easily some of the most intense and high spending areas of development. Question is do we need more Destiny 2? It was a ten year saga which came to an end. Some people rode it out until the end (invested too much to not see the end), some came back to see the end. For me it is fine, I still play a bit because I preordered the whole thing. However, they must come in my opinion with an entire new narrative - like 200 years after beating the Witness. A new story, new enemies, not like now. The Vex narrative is just filler content. We are going to the same locations and do the same repetitive stuff. It is just like tv shows at some point they also end. Sometimes there are spinoffs to milk the content. To me that’s what episodes are right now. Just milking D2 without any clear direction. In my opinion the drop in players is just simply because the saga is over. The narrative now that the Vex are threat doesn’t make any sense. If you are a seasoned player you have nothing to pursuit in terms of exotics or gear. We already have our good gear and weapons. We all dismantle our exotics, prime engrams because we are already to powerful. There is not really any incentive to grind other than perhaps get a title or complete a challenge - and no one cares about it. To me it is alright if the current D2 comes to an end.

If Sony comes in they are cleaning house. Expect to see even more rearrangement of positions and a general reduction in Bungie’s overall staff headcount. My prediction in that case is that the Destiny 2 slowdown still happens but Marathon is given to a new studio within SIE made specifically for it with rearranged Bungie devs. (Bungie Seattle maybe idk) Then Sony will start marking D3 plans because while Bungie can’t see the amazing thing they have I know Sony does. Otherwise the acquisition would have never happened. In short I think D2 dies either way, with Sony in direct control there is a hope for a D3 in the future. Possibly one with less abundant monetization. With Sony in direct control a lot of the really *really* stupid decisions will have a harder time finding the light of day. But this may also decrease the overall creative output of Bungie staff. Just my two cents.

Well its gotta be someone who's steering the ship. DMG in community management isn't the one in charge of spending the money. Joe Schmo the programmer making battlegrounds isn't pushing for another live service game to be made. Its almost certainly the fault of those making these big decisions like greenlighting Marathon for development, trying to make another spinoff game, buying $2.4 million worth of vintage cars, ect. I'm not sure how it couldn't be those people's fault.

“Scapegoat” is a strong word for “the real culprit all along.” In all seriousness though - it’s Bungie upper leadership. Always has been. There was something evidently wrong as far back as D1 before it even came out, even further back apparently if one was paying attention during the Halo years. The greed has finally caught up.
@oZiiix3 ай бұрын
@@underscore_5450 what if the game is just finished, the player base is older. Every company with a long running title has to account for their player base getting older. You can only do the same thing so many times different ways. The community has this view of what Destiny could be since Destiny 1. Hoping that one day it'll get close to their vision. After 10 years it never got there. Doing the same song and dance of "games dead" expansion announced "take my money" rinse repeat. The issues with Bungie are Bungie's they were even independent at one point and needed to be acquired to survive. It's over and that's fine after 10 years of the franchise. It's an achievement one of the best franchises ever made it's run is just over. There really is no need for what could have been because it would still end up being expensive regardless.
@nicholascazmay21263 ай бұрын
@@oZiiix It’s perfectly reasonable to argue it could have been managed far better than it was. Its death was not inevitable and it did not have to go this way. This is the result of repeatedly choosing to short change the game either to rip off players or allocate resources to doomed projects that would never see the light of day. This wasn’t inevitable - it was a choice. One Bungie leadership repeatedly kept making.

The smaller updates doesn’t make sense. Bungie was bought for almost 4 Billion dollars. The vast majority of their revenue is based on Destiny 2. So why would they reduce Destiny 2 content, when it’s the one thing keeping the studio afloat? Cost cutting and removing employees isn’t going to increase profit if they don’t continue to make a similar level of content to sell. They would be lowering revenue and costs and come out similar or worse to the situation they are currently in. It doesn’t make business sense to reduce the content Destiny 2 is pushing out…. So these leakers either got it wrong or I would be willing to bet Sony will step in and force Bungie to create decent levels of content so their investment isn’t a complete waste. Maybe the Sony integration is a good thing! Sony pushes out tons of Bangers. I had a Series X and bought a PS5 just to play all of the exclusives because they are so good. So maybe Sony stepping in and managing the company is a good thing. The points you made in this video point to the opposite of what the leakers or saying. It isn’t a smart business decision to slash away the only reliable revenue source. So until Bungie confirms expansions aren’t going to continue be released… I won’t get too upset over the idea. I love Destiny. I get burnt out and play other games for a bit between seasons/expansions. But I always come back to it and am willing to buy expansions if they are good. Despite what so many people say about leaving after Final Shape… if Bungie can continue to develop and market expansions around the level of quality of Witch Queen and Final Shape… the majority of us long time fans will keep coming back and spending and enjoying the game. For Bungie…. Or in the long run Sony to even allow or this minimal content pack plan is an insane business decision that is clear to anyone with a few brain cells doesn’t make sense. If it’s clear to us… it’s clear to Sony. So let’s hope they step in and make sure Bungie continues to invest into Destiny’s future. I’m sure they are willing to invest a bit more… while Bungie focuses solely on Destiny and Marathon… to continue to maintain to loyal customer base they currently have.

The fundamental issue Destiny 1 and 2 never got around was the fact that the tools and engine they used to make Destiny were never conducive to having anything close to economically efficient production. but due to it being a live game they never had the time or resources to fully overhaul their engine and tools and address the technical debt and inefficiencies in their production pipeline. They might have been able to make that choice at some point in the past. but if so its clear they chose to kick the can down the road until that was no longer a viable option and they were basically stuck with what they had in D2, more or less. Instead of making 3 other games, they probably should have put a lot of that money into making Destiny something that could be developed sustainably. Which basically meant these issues were terminal, without some massive cash injection

That concept sounds very appealing to me. I always thought the Guardian was the most boring character in the Destiny universe, but if you're telling me i could play as Elsie Bray or Ada-1 and fight monsters and do raids in an open world... That seems pretty cool to me. And judging how popular first descendent is, I bet the project would have been successful IF they could give proper resources to it... There's one point that I think is really obvious in relation to Destiny. The players have been saying for a long time that the new light experience is terrible. In a business sense the game has a tiny, difficult on-ramp and a huge, easy to use off-ramp. (The seasonal model grinds on you after a while, making that off-ramp more appealing each season) So, each expansion selling less than the last is not just predictable, it's INEVITABLE. I could've told them that for a lot less than their average executive makes. 🤔

If D2 is going into somewhat of a maintenance mode, looking on the brighter side, it could mean the ability for them to bring QoL to the game that everyone has been clamoring about for years. Especially features that have been in the game that have been needing a rework like weapon crafting, actual bad luck protection, knockout systems, the list goes on.
