What's been so crazy to me is that I mostly knew Paul's work through random Forbes articles that would be recommended to me from time to time and I would only very occasionally see a thing of his on KZbin, but the MAIN THING I've always thought about him before ever knowing about any of the rest of this Internet "lore" is that he seems chill, down-to-earth, fair, and drama free (which, btw, I'll bet is absolutely true). So after seeing all of the comments and responses to some of these incredibly reasonable things he has posted lately, it just confirms to me that The Internet will absolutely find ANY WAY to try to obliterate even the most reasonable of things, just 4 the lulz.

What makes him more of an expert in this field than any other gamer? In the age of the internet, why do we arbitrarily elevate someone's voice over anyone else with an internet connection? Why do game journalists so frequently express opinions that are at odds with the opinions of the larger gaming community? Pretending like a journalist's opinion is any more insightful/important than anyone else's is so pretentious, and it's this attitude that has alienated gamers from games journalism.

I will always maintain that Marvel's Avengers was one of the best combat systems in the history of gaming, and as I tried to tell everyone at the time, Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad would not be better (I was right) because making 3rd person superheroes with high definition realism is one of the hardest things you can possibly do in game development, and companies like Insomniac (or anybody else) would never even attempt it (I was right) because it is a juggernaut task to do, and almost nobody even has the development engine capable of doing it. The game had so much potential, but the hate narratives consumed everything and then it was bought by Embracer who had no idea what the IP even was, they were just looking to resell it for cash. Terrible thing to do to one of the last projects personally pushed for and worked on by Stan Lee. Not only did gamers do gamers a disservice hopping on the hate for that game (really, gamers need to give ANY ongoing game two years before you can tell what it REALLY can be, and if you don't like it just don't play it until then, but don't push for it's downfall, most actually great ongoing games had MAJOR issues their first two years). Now you have no shot of getting for example, a high-def realistic X-men game, because if anybody was actually capable and had the tech for it, it was the guys at Crystal Dynamics, just because they are one of the few with the actual tech for it. My biggest failing of gamers by gamers in the history of gaming IMO, which was all based on "somebody else can do it better", which no guys.....they can't. Not yet. Not like that. Marvel Rivals will be as close as you ever get for a long long time in a multiplayer superhero game.

You're one of the most consistent viewpoints in the gaming journalism space right now. You clearly care about and enjoy these things, you're a participant in the community as opposed to just a paid observer filling out copy and that's always been apparent to me at least, and I assume I speak for a lot of other people here as well. I know I can get your viewpoints delivered with no bullshit, no drama, no manufactured clickbait outrage, nothing. Just another guy who's into the same stuff I am giving his take, like how it used to be. Anyone who doesn't see the massive value in having someone like you around isn't someone whose opinions matter much.

I found this amazingly insightful. As someone who regularly reads your gaming and movie articles on Facebook, i find the comments underneath them exhausting (entirely different story on Bluesky btw). People's media literacy has become so poor that they attack journalists now over pretty much anything. I also find that whole "ugh the woke left is offended by skimpy outfits" like have you SEEN the Baldur's Gate community? Most leftists online are like the horniest fandoms I know. Those characters are very sexual, but entirely within the rules of THEIR characters, not yours. Some are ok with polyamory, others not so much. I as a so called "woke libtard" have never been offended by a sexy character in a game, provided it's not some kind of rape glorification thing.

Yeah I don't always agree with you and there are some games I wish you would review but I get it, time is a huge constraint. Your Destiny content led me to your channel which I was an avid player of and it's a good "junk food game". A game you don't really put too much thought into while it still feels good to play, which I get. Your take on BG3 is really good, if you played it with friends I think you might update your view on it more, because I think that's where it shines the most. 10,000 creates a skill so another 8,000 in ARPGs LOL will make it a skill. I don't always like ARPGs but POE 2 I have been taking my sweet time playing and glad to see you review it and I can see you trying to split time between it and Destiny in the future, amongst everything else. No shame in following build guides POE 1 is notorious for having a lot of players doing that.

He doesn't like Game A just because he liked Game B and they have similarities. He liked this game, despite it having something he said he didn't like in another game. He forms opinions on a game by game basis, and so he can't reliably fit into one camps narrative. He's unreliable. You actually need to watch his videos and read his articles to know how he feels about things. And most importantly his opinions can change over time. This makes a lot of people uncomfortable because this is confusing to them and their simple ideas about what's 'Good' and 'Bad'.

This is why I could never review video games. The fanbase for every video game is toxic. That might be true for some games more than others but every community is going to have people that make that game their entire personality simply because they have nothing else and thrive on driving new players out of their safe space. From what I know of the PoE community, these are extremely dedicated players who enjoy whipping up an Excel workbook in order to theory craft builds and optimize their character. They aren't the type of people that are very welcoming to new players.
