I’d love to see a video on looking for deer. People always say go slow but how slow is slow and how quiet do you actually have to be? Look out for every twig so you don’t step on it or just don’t be running through the bush?

Awesome tips mate and well filmed. I've run quad sticks heaps over the last 18 months. Game changer for stability. Only crux I've found is a moving target if the grass is thick and long. You kind of end up trying to walk them unless you pull them together like you mentioned. They work a lot better on clearer ground.

Yeah it can be a little hard but I found with sambar T lest it. If you pick a clear spot for a shot in front of them and then use the sambar call just before the step into the clear spot they normally shot and stand still in the opening long enough to take a good shot.

Hi Paul, Another fantastic video. Thanks. It's great to see an educator like yourself discouraging people from attempting head shots on Deer. I hope more of the high profile people do the same. The brain of a Deer is only a 2 inch target which, under field conditions can be hard enough to hit let alone a target that may make a snap move at any instant. Deer are notoriously a twitchy animal and the head is what moves suddenly and without warning. There is far too much risk of catastrophically injuring the animal without it being fatal. As you pointed out, that's why one in the engine room is the humane shot to take as it's a much bigger target and the animal will expire quickly.

@@tun0fun As a general all round sambar hunting caliber I recommend a 30-06. Great for hound hunting or stalking a like. Works from 10m to 400m with options of 130g to 220g available. Easy to handle when shooting with ammo readily available everywhere, even from the smallest county outlets.

Quad sticks appear awkward, and u don’t always have the time to set them up if a quick shot presents itself. Just get a lightweight camera tripod, and fit a V yoke to the top. They can extent up to shoulder height for stand up shots. Cheap and effective.

I used the tripod for years but I the quads are about the same to set up once your used to it but offer a much steadier rest

G’day Paul love your videos very informative . Just a quick question do you think the 308 factory outback ammo 165 gr game king would hold up on a big stag if I did my part with shot placement . I’ve been trying to find the episode which shows the outback ammo being used . Cheers Bronwyn

Definitely mate I have shot some very large stags with a 308 using 150g game king. Always give your deer 15 minutes to die before walking over to it helps but it’s even more important on large stags as they can take a hit and still run

I’ve never lost a deer shooting it in the neck, sadly lost a few shooting it in the engine room though. Hate the thought of losing deer that’s for sure.

Unfortunately I have lost count on how many I have seen or found over the years, still walking around with a bullet hole in there neck or head but never found one alive after a hit to the engine room. Most people ride off a bad neck/head shot as a clean miss but often its not. Because I film a lot of sambar being shot its amazing how many times it looks like a clean miss until I check out the footage at home. Because sambar don't suffer from hydraulic shock, a good hit to the engine room wait 15 minutes then go pick up your deer is the safest way to take a sambar deer, I have found in all my years of experience.

@@PaulBoagsOutdoors yeah fair enough Paul. I guess context comes into it as well. I purely shoot at night on private property when they’re in open fields (I also record every shot on my thermal). The ones of lost have gotten over a fence I don’t have permission for or back into scrub so think I can hardly walk in it. I reckon if I was out in the bush I’d shoot engine room for the reasons you’ve stated.

Not much usage for shoting sticks in real sambar hunt and price about 600$ for it.just normal ordinary wood stick with v shape on the top can replace it and its FREE

90% of my customers shoot sambar from stick. It all about seeing the deer before it sees you so you have all the time to set up & take the right shot. Just a Stick works too no doubt, but they are never as steady as good shooting sticks & Some people think 600 is ok if it means you don't need to spend hour looking for deer that and not shot very well, each to there own. I shot plenty of sambar for over 20 years before I ever use sticks, but until you try something you will never now how good they can be.
