Hi Paul, great video, and the smile on your face when she fired up was priceless. I was happy to see you enjoying yourself like that. Good luck with the chemo, and your recovery. I discovered this channel in December of 2020 when I was convalescing, after having been through cancer surgery. I was off work for a month and binge watched all your videos. Thoroughly enjoyed them all, thanks for making them, and I certainly hope that you can continue to do so. I like your teaching style.

@@paulbrodie Same to you sir. Cancer is a rough go, as you know all too well. We are all rooting for you of course. I am a fellow Brit, and I also used to build my own bike frames (before my shop was destroyed in a widfire in 2018). Your videos have definitely been a huge inspiration in my wanting to put together another shop, and build more bikes, as soon as I am able to make that happen. I live in Seattle so after you beat this thing if you're ever down this way, or if I'm ever up north of the border , I'd love to shake your hand. All the very best to you.

HA - the problem with the throttle - 'human error' maybe - HA - I would crash that for sure, like a hand shift and foot clutch on a HD, or right hand gear change on an early Triumph etc, my brain fails to acknowledge the manual dexterity required to ride anything other than left hand foot gear change - HA. NEATO bike - sounds like my XR1000 with its straight out pipes I made. I like the consistency of 'delicate' tools - a ballpeen hammer for the carb and crowbar to remove things from a mould - HA. That throttle linkage is a work of art. CHEERS from AUSTRALIA.

1:24 Paul, ice might still be a possibility for the situation of your crash. Having tuned lots of SUs on cars, I can confirm ice on the trumpets and bodies even on a mild day. Knowing your attention to detail and likely close machining tolerances, a long wide open throttle run in humid conditions could form enough frost to stick the throttle. Oh, and DAMN Harry is loud 🙂👌

WOW!😮 I’m listening to Harry run through surround sound speakers at home. Even over the camera that engine sounds like an absolute beast. I can see how that bike could tear a rider up….a handful lol. I can’t believe you actually built a whole motor cycle! That’s amazing. Thanks paul for another cool video 👍🙂 BTW, do you have an idea of how many cc’s that motor is. Sounds like a 1000cc’s or more.

David, thanks for watching and commenting. Excelsiors are 1000cc. You are correct...

Pertaining to the throttle sticking: My first car was a 1968 Pontiac Grand Prix, and I did A LOT of burnouts(power brake/smoke show). Rarely while doing a burnout, the throttle would stick. Luckily I always had the presence of mine to turn off the ignition key, killing the engine. The strange thing is, I could never find anything wrong afterword. I eventually figured out what was happening. That car had a solid rod style throttle linkage, kinda like your bike has. While doing a burnout, the engine would torque to the side a bit, and put that linkage into a bind. When I turned off the key, the engine would return back to its resting position, removing the tension from the throttle linkage and allowing it to release and return to the idle position. It doesn't seem like your motorcycle engine could really move around much(at least not like a 400ci V8 with worn rubber motor mounts), but maybe something(frame/forks) flexed enough to put a bind on your linkage.

Yes, the throttle mystery. We had the bike on the dyno for almost a full day, and the throttle never, ever stuck...

If you had a conventional slide carb it would be simple enough to guess why it stuck. Main reason slide carb throttles stick open is high vacuum causing slide to bind against body. It's why modern four stroke MX bikes (before they went to fuel injection) had roller wheels on slide and street bikes had CV carbs with throttle butterfly I read about a long time ago in relation to either a Manx Norton or BSA Gold Star. Throttle 'sticks' at about 3/4 open until rpm drops. You already have a butterfly carb so I can't come up with a plausible explanation.

Enjoy?? Quite the understatement Paul. Watching your friend run the starter made my shoulders hurt. Clearly those cylinders produce quite a bit of compression! I can’t even imagine riding that on a road course! I hope you’re feeling better, you certainly look/sound like it. You get extra credit for discussing/describing an awful crash man. I’ve definitely piled a few race bikes , but there aren’t many I like to discuss !!!

Thanks Glen. Harrys compression ratio is about 8:1 and you do have to hang onto the starter. Ruby Racer has a compression ratio of 12.5:1 so you have to pay a little more attention :)

good to see you back paul harry sounds superb but maybe a cutout by the throttle would be a good mod. good luck with your recovery.

Brilliant! Its great to see you back and on the mend giving us great vids, I can assure you you were missed. I can see this bike for sale in one of the large auction houses, selling for a very large sum of money and ending up in one of the exclusive museums where history is on display i.e. for instance the Barbour Museum accompianing Mr Millyards creations. When Harry didnt run properly and the plus were wet it reminds me of my Laverda 750SF, every time I go to start it usually with a gap of a few weeks it will run on one cylinder and it can be either. I remove both plugs and heat them with a blow lamp, this works every time. I suspect its running a bit rich. To see you back is well corth a few coffies. Thanks

Hello Paul, enjoyable little video, thank you. As you said, not straight forward, but very interesting for us to watch. I expect we were all giving our opinions as to the problems! You’re sounding great so keep up what you are doing it and I will be looking out for your next video. Thanks again to you and Mitch ( and also the crank man!) Best wishes Kevin.

Person: those old bikes are so delicate. you have to be easy on them Paul: We'll just hit the bowl a few times with this hammer to make sure the float doesn't stick. *bangbangbangbang That should do it. Seriously though, could you imagine firing that hot rod up and flyign around a board track at 120mph? *shivers

Love your videos, Paul! Quick question, you seem to prelubricate with 80w90 oil, so quite heavy. Is this the motor oil and if not why do you use such heavy oil? Thanks and all the best from Germany!
@paulbrodie

The heavier oil tends to stick to those surfaces longer. For the motor I use a good grade of 10/40. Thanks for watching!

Good day sir. Billy Lane inspired me to build a open rocker arm Ironhead sportster motor. I will be building the whole board track bike around it. After listening to Harry run. It gives me the inspiration to keep going with pleasure! Thank you very much. Be blessed. Smitty in Vegas.
