The Beatles “We can Work it out” is a great example of going from quarter to dotted eight notes. At least that’s how I think of it. When it gets to that “so I will ask you once again” part, Ringo goes to a beat that’s 3/4ths of the regular beat of the song. So when thinking about how to tap in dotted eighth notes based on the quarter note, I just play a version of ‘We can Work it out’ in my head that’s in beat with the song I’m playing and then I jump into the “ask you once again” part to get the dotted eighth note tapped in properly.

If anyone's interested in hearing an album that is basically built around this technique, Angels And Airwaves' "We Don't Need to Whisper" basically uses it on 90% of the tracks. The music might not be to everyone's taste but they do use the 8th note delay in very interesting ways !

Tom started experimenting with Boss DD-6 Digital Delay on the Box Car Racer album, used to experiment with Boss BF-3 Flanger on the self-titled Blink-182 album. So Angels & Airwaves is a tribute to U2 and The Cure as part of their influence. The other side is his punk legacy.

For anyone that uses ToneStack on IOS there are several delay pedals within the Motherload IAPs including DuckWalk Taproom and Delay Tripper that all have a dotted 1/8th note setting when you turn on BPM Sync, Sync or Delay Sync respectively. That trick to get the dotted eighth notes while staying in the quarter note setting is great!! I can set my stomp box to dotted 8 but it's a long process of inserting a cable, hold down the on/off switch, turn a dial, etc...which takes too long and is stuck in that setting until I reverse the procedure. So with the 3 over 4 poly-rythmn I can leave the pedal set to quarter notes and jump into dotted eight on the fly! It took some practice but I have it down! Thank you so much!! So

Great explanation Paul. I learned this technique a very long time ago, when delays were explained to me by a few great producers years and years ago. It not easy sometimes for beginners to "get" how delay timing works, and how the dotted eight note works with delays. SO many artists use this and its great when you find a way to explain it so that players actually understand and can make really god use of the delay, instead of just finding cool stuff...LOL If that makes sense. Great vid.. this will help a TON of people figure out great sounds and patterns...I bet the sale of delays just spiked!..

Wow, I think about those little Soundpages once in a while. I had forgotten what they were called, but occasionally I'd try to explain the concept to a youngster: "Well, it was attached between pages of a magazine, like a subscription insert. Made of really thin vinyl, so it flexed. You'd cut it out, it was smooth on the bottom so they'd tell you to tape a coin to it so it wouldn't slip as it tried to make a revolution on the turntable with the weight of the tone arm on it..." Then, spying the glazed over, uncomprehending expression of the bewildered Millennial I'm talking to, I try another approach: "Well, a magazine was a thing made out of paper, with words printed on it... No, not an app -- paper and ink were physical things. So was the disk. Ah, y'know what? Forget it." Then I say: "It was free." The kid lights up. "So, free... like MUSIC!" Great playing, BTW. I've watched and listened to a lot of your demos and performances.
