one very worthwhile tip to add - COPY your loop each time and then do any further additions to the copy, keeping the original. That way you can go back and do things differently if you decide several layers later that you took a wrong turn.

@paulmdevenney4 жыл бұрын
If the question is "should I add a guitar solo", the answer is "Yes!" Seriously though , you are touching on the thing I find toughest about song building. I've always described the problem as "can't escape the loop". Clearly you've demonstrated how viable a 4 chord repeat is able to produce an excellent complete product. Pesonally though I prefer to vary verse, chorus and bridge. Tips on "breaking the loop" would be a very welcome next video. Particularly any music theory that might allow a little application of technique to support concept.

Paul, sorry I’m late getting to this video. It’s awesome! If you haven’t tried the Ditto X4 by TC Electronic there is a feature you might enjoy. It’s a fade feature. Every time you record a new layer the oldest layer drops off. Newer layers lower in volume. This was something Steve Morse suggested to them. You can essentially keep a song going and evolving indefinitely. It’s an amazing practice tool, it keeps your creativity juiced up, and it’s just a lot of fun. As a solo musician it’s a nice way to sit in a corner and play music for a crowd at an art gallery, private party, busking or just impressing the ladies. If you haven’t already give it a try.

Thanks Paul. This is a tremendously useful, illustrative ‘how to’ video, very professionally produced naturally. It has prompted me to kick out of the rut of creating repetitive loops with overdubs, but letting the idea die there. Highly motivated now to take an initial loop and add layers on my DAW, although the final version is unlikely to be as creative as your excellent track.

Looper pedal tip: If you have "headphone out" in your keyboard or whaterver instrument, you can use that with regular guitar cable to a looper. All you need is little cheap adapter in between. You can also sing straight to a looper pedal with xlr female/normal guitar jack -cable. So you can beatbox, sing or do other voices into a loop. I've done awesome soundscapes straight to a guitar amp trough a normal little looper pedal using guitar, keyboards, bass and voice. Try it. Sky is the limit!

You are a fantastic player and have a lot to offer folks looking to learn. That being said, I find that the one thing missing from these instructional videos is any reference to STORY TELLING. This video gives me more questions than answers: Why these particular chord choices? Was their a life experience that inspired you? Do you want to send a message to someone or maybe the world? We certainly can't give people the life experiences for story telling, but we can remind them that this is generally the purpose of songs, or at least it was. Perhaps the purpose of music has changed and people are no longer interested in songs that tell stories and I am way off base. I'm open to all possibilities, it's just that all too often I hear songs with interesting chord choices and hooks, but completely disconnected from the story. I'm still old school and the story is much more important to me than hooks or production. Etta James has a two chord song that tells a story and moves me in a way that a lot of other more sophisticated songs do not. I think you are doing great work here, just a few thoughts.

Impressive, I must say. Especially when knowing that it's basically the same 4 chords over and over again. The only thing I'd have loved to hear more about is Song Structure, as imo this whole "you build up tension untill the chorus" doesn't apply to all music. F.e. in Metal, the focus sometimes is more on the riffs or lead guitars and not necessarily solely on the chorus. But hey, still gonna boot up Cubase now and experiment a bit, thanks for the inspiration :D

Hi Paul! I love these videos where you work through a building process from simple start incrementing to higher levels or more details. I find them both helpful and inspirational. Please consider doing a tutorial on how to (starting equipment and basic techniques) set up video & audio recording of guitar and accessories in a small space to help us present to or collaborate with others. For example if I want to show off a new guitar, or walk through a pedalboard setup, or get critiques on some particulars of my playing.
