Paulette Goddard met George Gershwin at a party at the home of Edward G. Robinson in March 1937, her husband at that time Charlie Chaplin was also there. A romance between Goddard and Gershwin followed. They met secretly at Gershwin’s home in Beverly Hills and in Palm Springs and even went on vacation together for two months in May 1937. George Gershwin died on July 11th the same year at the age of 38 because of a brain tumor. Before his death, Gershwin asked Goddard for her hand in marriage, but she didn't wanted to leave Charlie Chaplin. Gershwin’s heart was broken. It is said that he thought of Paulette when he wrote the song "They can't take that away from me", which Fred Astaire later sung in the movie "Shall We Dance".

Thank you so much for posting this! I had no idea about Goddard and Gershwin! What a pair! I think she was a woman ahead of her time and one gets the feeling that she was just an easy-going lady, Didn't take herself to seriously and certainly didn't take the trivialities of Hollywood to heart...much. I think she is a hugely underrated talent.

Thank you for this comment! Had some comments saying disrespectful things about her that I had to delete. People were saying she was a s*** just because of this affair with Gershwin. It is easy to shame someone, but we all don't know the background of this relationship and it even could be that Chaplin and Goddard had sort of a 'special arrangement'. But these people writing such disrespectful things don't know her at all, otherwise they wouldn't call her that way. She was way ahead of her time and such a joyful character that was an inspiration for the characters she played in her two Chaplin films. She never wanted bad blood after her divorces and there was absolutely no drama after her and Chaplin's divorce. And she was a very hard working and extremely intelligent woman, she made several films a year. Definitely a carreer woman and very modern for her time 🤍

Paulette Goddard got more interesting as she got older. Her later movies show a very sophisticated and glamorous woman.

Home movies, not home "video." Video is electronic or electromagnetic recording of moving images. These were FILMS.

@@QueensLadyDay I don't think so, strong orthodox Jew. I believe he was a favorite at the new York brothels. He had a girl before he suddenly died of a braintumor. Big Yankees fan. Not everyone who is good at the piano is gay. I think you have him confused with liberace that's your boy. Or maybe Rock Hudson.
