I grew up in a small New England church with a magnificent pipe organ in the choir loft at the back of the church. I sang in the children’s choir and we practiced in the loft with the pipe organ, played by a wonderfully talented woman from Estonia. We all loved her. No church has ever felt as inspirational and reverent since then. We learned to sing our best, harmonize, and pour our very souls into our anthems. That organ was one of life’s greatest gifts to me. It was a bond among friends, a powerful connection to all that is holy, an instrument of praise, and a memory I will always cherish. I heard the Hallelujah Chorus played on it many times.

Fantastic rendition! I attended a service there about 30 years ago, and during one of the hymns I heard authentic hand-bells behind and above; they were in cabinets, whose doors had opened automatically when the stop was pulled. After the service, I took a guided tour of the church, and upon returning to the sanctuary, the organist was rolling back a carved partition that hid the organist from view of the congregation, and was awestruck by the 5-manual console. I talked a short while with the organist and he offered to let me play it! I played my go-to college recital piece, Chaconne en Sol, by Louis Couperin, which gave me opportunity to utilize several of the manuals. I RUE that I lacked the chutzpah to pull some big reeds at the end! One other remark: I remember, between the last two pillars on both sides are offset chests supporting the huge 32' open diapason pipes; I could see the mitered tops. Are they behind the guilded pipes?
@WDHOOD2
@WDHOOD2 Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, this instrument doesn’t have a 32’ Open Diapason rank of pipes. What you might have seen would have been the 32’ Untersatz, which is one of the finest examples of that stop in DC. What would be the 32’ Open Wood stop you mentioned are Walker Digital pedal extensions.

Can't wait! This organ was originally a 50 rank EM Skinner Organ during the 30s. My organ teacher commissioned Möller to build a 4 manual organ in 1976. Then, in 1985, it became the first 5 manual organ in DC. Simon Preston said, "Once you play this organ, it spoils you for others." Will you play the 5 manual organ at First Baptist Church.

What a superbly played organ transcription of "Hallelujah Chorus"!!! Not easy, especially at that tempo, which most orchestras use. Excellent use of the 4th finger on moving notes while octaves sustained (King of Kings, Lord of Lords)with other fingers. Demonstrates your practiced, practiced time spent on independent finger exercises. Fantastic organ for this Handel composition. Video beautiful. Best wishes on the remainder of your US tour.
