British shows rely more on intelligent, character-driven plots; American garbage just focuses on selling you something, usually sex and the "necessity" of gun ownership.

@rdlewis3616, it's that the tech generations are all sounding and looking like avatars. It's very strange and interesting to study the mass movements over the decades. The early Cary grant, Gary Cooper, Barbara stanwich movies they all had that Hollywood brit kind of affectation to their speech. It goes on and on. The California orange county girls snobby snark permeates still. The biggest change I notice in serials and movies came when Miami vice ditched orchestral scores for pop music releases and the intro of digital imagery taking over special effects and more. Too too much in your face and less to the imagination. I love the old analog and continuous tone mediums over digital for viewing and listening. Thanks for the upload of these wonderful mystery greats.

Swearing is far more tolerable than the pearl-clutching misogyny from the young, deeply unpleasant sanctimonious cop. Both of the junior partners actually. Wexford is the only decent one.

Of the many things I like about this series is that no one is shirtless exposing their abs, no one is a former Green Beret with ''special skills'' and an arsenal of weapons in a secret closet. The series is based on crime detection and drama, we aren't going to see swat teams and red dot lasers on guns. It doesn't boil down to a jiu jitsu fight with half a dozen karate experts.

I suppose the TV films of the Wexford series were broadcast on British telly in the order given into this playlist, since it's been named "chronological" , BUT , what ever the case may be, the novels were published in a rather different order, if I may be so bold as to dare believe Wikipedia : Novels 1. From Doon with Death (1964) 2. A New Lease of Death (1967) (known as Sins of the fathers in the US) 3. Wolf to the Slaughter (1968) 4. The Best Man to Die (1969) 5. A Guilty Thing Surprised (1970) 6. No More Dying Then (1971) 7. Murder Being Done Once (1972) (known as Murder being once done in the US) 8. Some Lie And Some Die (1973) 9. Shake Hands Forever (1975) 10. A Sleeping Life (1978) 11. Put on By Cunning (1981) (known as Death notes in the US) 12. The Speaker of Mandarin (1983) 13. An Unkindness of Ravens (1985) 14. The Veiled One (1988) 15. Kissing the Gunner's Daughter (1992) 16. Simisola (1994) 17. Road Rage (1997) 18. Harm Done (1999) 19. The Babes in the Wood (2002) 20. End in Tears (2005) 21. Not in the Flesh (2007) 22. The Monster in the Box (2009) 23. Thank you for this video. This Wexford mystery is considerably different to later ones, especially with the gripping music! The slice of life sub-plots typical of the series were also more deeper. This is such a fun episode! The artist is a parody of me, my art, introversion and confused housekeeping. Then there're the retro customs, the banter ("You ought to leave your lungs to science"), and Russell Hunter's preciously clever sparring exchange during the interview, even chiding the detective... Russell Hunter, King of the Oppressed Character. All had me laughing out loud and understanding other people's view of artists. So convincing, so natural. What a hoot. Thanks, Paul

Most artists are slightly eccentric (and delightfully so). Also they can be very vague. Rupert is no exception. But if this description also applies to you, please don't worry or be offended. Artists live on a different plane to other mortals. I for one wouldn't change that state of affairs for the world. Artists are unique and must be cherished, while their work delights the eye of the beholder.

@Argile: Please don't stick labels on people. If you mean Rupert, he's an artist. Even if you're a qualified psychologist who is actually in practice (which I very much doubt), you still don't know enough about the character even to make any kind of diagnosis, let alone label him. To me he seems a fairly typical, dedicated artist out of touch with anything outside his art. Let's leave it at that without any amateur psychology.

This isn't from the 21st century, where "Aspergers is fashionable"; this series is from the early 90s, i believe, when autism was represented as the 'idiot savant' archetype (see also: Rain Man). HFA is always misrepresented in popular culture, regardless.
@Arabzene
@Arabzene 8 ай бұрын
@@msmltvcktl It is from 1987. Also, the character of the artist is definitely portrayed as wacky and "out there".... The viewer doesn't have to be a psychiatrist to see that his behavior is similar to many people who are autistic or have an obsessive/compulsive diagnosis. Just because the guy is an artist doesn't mean he has to behave so erratically.

Just now reading the novel & having seen this video before l was struck by Rendell’s description of the glass sculpture (p.18) on Inspector Wexford’s desk as “indigo blue.” My recall was the glass in this film was green. And so it is. Memory may wobble at my age - so l was pleased to find it hadn’t in the instance. A very small point. But it’s fun to chart the faithfulness of book to film. Also Rendell describes Wexford as “corpulent,” an adjective l would NEVER apply to the late George Baker!

Did George Baker play Tiberius?!? I'm amazed. I've seen the ruins of his palace on Capri and heard all the stories about him from my friends in Campania. I just can't square George Baker as the genial and human Inspector Wexford with the idea of George Baker as the sadistic Tiberius. I suppose he didn't speak with a Wiltshire accent in that role ...

I've seen all of these at least once if not more and I'm planning to see them in order again now! I'm in my70's , but don't mind dramas with all the cursing and gunfights , but I never got into a lot of the most popular and long running American detective /police shows! I've loved everything from NYPD Blue, Hill St. Blues , the old and new Hawaii 5-0 and Blue Bloods just to name a very few and the Law & Order franchise is one of my all-time favorites each seen too many times to count over the years,so I enjoy a wide variety having just watched "The Mayor of Kingstown" which I have to admit was ALMOST a little too much for me at times! I get Brit Box and Acorn and love a lot of the British detective shows, but I think I've watched "Vera" the most and I don't think I've seen many guns pulled out around her! It's Sat. night and I'll get back to another episode of" Det Wexford ".

This is a great episode, and I remember watching it when it came out in 1987. Raymond Francis (Chief Superintendent Lockhart), Russell Hunter (Lonely from Callan), and Kim Thomson with that beautiful hair: this is a real treat!

Raymond Francis isn’t in this. Are you confusing him with Donald Hewlett (was an English actor, born in Northenden, Manchester, Lancashire, and best known for his sitcom roles as Colonel Charles Reynolds in It Ain't Half Hot Mum and Lord Meldrum in You Rang, M'Lord? )

Holy crap. After watching several Inspector Wexford mysteries, I am getting the message this show is about yummy men for the ladies, from Det. Drayton, Sgt. Martin, straight-laced Det. Burden, to the old suave silver fox himself, Chief Inspector Wexford. Even some of the villains are quite attractive. My oh my, there's something there for everyone of us, a smorgasbord of men.

@@mfjdv2020 I have had some delightful daydreams about several of them because they are real men. Sorry to say, many of the young "men" of today look to be girly, with their skinny jeans barely covering their hips, their toothpick legs and their man-buns...

@mfjdv2020 3 жыл бұрын
@@sagrammyfour I suppose it all depends on one's definition of an attractive man, eh? And I daresay all these skinny young men nowadays will eventually put on weight and fill out in middle age ... The boys of my generation all had long hair, which looks very attractive providing one has nice thick hair, and that it gets washed and brushed. Each generation has its own idiosyncrasies.

@@mfjdv2020 As far as many of the young men today, I'm afraid it's gone past just looks. Not only do they not look like a man with real testicles, they don't act like they have any. Now I said "many," not all. There is hope for the human race.

Just Barnaby #1 ... the "real" one ... not the one with the BORING career wife, which doesnt add anything to the series through her career and subtracts all the little "personal hobbies" which Joyce (and daughter Cully) had to hook up some stories in the episodes.
