That was great. I think it can be very difficult to bring Ruth Rendell's psychological studies of human nature to the screen. She delves deeply into what evil can lurk behind the ordinary and always did a wonderful job of bringing so many character studies together to form a multi-leveled novel quality mystery story. This was perfectly done and a great success. She is my favorite mystery writer. I'm on a long term and totally disorganized project of trying to read all her books. I've actually read her first.

Classic Ruth Rendell, with themes of psychopathy, obsession and the superficiality of celeb culture. A particularly nasty twist was Darren’s heartlessness. Darren turned out as much a disappointment to Nerissa as Steven had been to Gwendolen. Geraldine James’s portrayal of prickly Gwendolen was outstanding, so convincing, and Luke Treadaway was chillingly authentic as well.

Yes, and the blonde girl's body would have been stiff with rigor mortis after being under the floor for long enough to stink, as the landlady commented on the bad smell in that room. And the girl's body was wrapped in a bed sheet and polythene - there was no loose hand to be dug up by the police. Small things but careless in this film whereas Ruth Rendell in her books was precise and attentive to detail.

@@carolineherzog9254 It's an inaccurate generalization, mostly to feel they "understand" such cruelty; much worse, used as an excuse. There are plenty violent ones that had a normal childhood. Sociopathy is like cancer - part environmental, part choice of lifestyle, and a tiny part hormonal/dna, which in turn are interdependent.
