One more reason for having a revolver instead of an autoloader. My elderly mother can no longer pull the slide back on her pistols. She lacks grip strength to pull it back to load, unload, or clear any malfunctions. She bought the LCR and been shooting it over last few months without any complaints. She loves the LCR and has said she feels more comfortable with it in her pocket or purse. Noticed a manufacturer recently released a new pistol that is "easier" to pull the slide back and they're marketing it to those with reduced grip strength & arthritis

C Nemeth: It's not the trigger pull, it's racking the slide. Many females have trouble racking slides. I finally learned a method for doing it (basically push with my arm & body), but they are still difficult for me. With some revolvers, after shooting awhile the trigger gets hard to pull, but it's no problem to use both index fingers for that if you need to.

Revolver vs auto loading pistol: my full size CZ P09 is very reliable, no malfunctions at all. My small Ruger LCP II spent most of its life being repaired. First, live rounds were jammed into the ejection port every dozend shots, then the magazines kept falling out every couple of shots, now there's double feeds ever dozend shots and the warranty has expired. Not to mention that I cannot shoot decent groups with it and the aim is way off. My 30+ year old all-steel Taurus .38 snub nose just works and I can hit what I'm aiming at quite well. It sometimes had light primer strikes. Turns out the previous owner shortened the hammer spring too much. Being a revolver this did not cause a jam, you just have to pull the trigger a couple more times. With a new hammer spring it now fires every time I pull the trigger. Based on my expirience, I rather have a small revolver than a small autoloading pistol. The revolver may be thicker, heavier and have less amo capacity, but it works reliably and I can shoot it well.

Paul glad to see you back. In my 25 years in law enforcement I have used several off duty firearms. Mostly using a Colt Officer's model in 45 of course but depending on the need I have used a Sig Stainless 380 or one of my varied models of S&W .38 J frames. Civilians who chose to carry a semi are usually at a disadvantage as the simply do not practice, something them must do for that type of firearm. God Bless America

Paul, I'd love to see a presentation on .327 Federal, there's an LCR chambered in it. It's supposed to give ballistic performance in the same league as .357 Mag, while giving you 6 rounds, in what would otherwise be a 5 round revolver. I'd love to see what it actually does to a meat target, compared to .357 Magnum.

Yeah that would be a awesome review but I think Paul has put it off because of all the hype. Sometimes the reviews that reveal something isn't really quite what people think it is aren't always well received. Personally I think of the 327 Federal as a highly practical trail gun and varmint cartridge especially if you hand load semi jacketed hollow points meant for 32 S&W long or 32 H&R Magnum. But this would be a dismal review since there isn't any factory loads offered for this application that I'm aware of and most of the guns in production for 327 federal have barrels under 3 inches and guns with barrels over 3 inches in this caliber are somewhat rare oddities. As for personal protection I think it really closely mimics 9mm luger +p but with more penetration which could be interpreted as good or bad depending on intended use. 327 federal seems to actually out perform standard pressure 9mm for ballistic performance a little and that might be were federal gets off comparing it to 357 mag. As for the claims regarding comparisons to 357 Magnum I think this definitely needs to be debunked. Another issue I've had with 327 federal is almost every offering on the market is hyper ammo as Paul Harrell would call it. So it would be a expensive top dollar review.

Well that is one of the three constants that effect ballistics, so yeah I think it counts. You'd really impress me if you showed how all .38+P loads improved on the .327.

The only addendum to your list of reasons for carrying a revolver as opposed to an autoloader: My mother has severe arthritis, specifically in the thumbs. This makes racking the action of anything more than a .22lr nearly impossible (just unable to place sufficient thumb pressure to hold the slide, even when using multiple grip techniques). Admittedly, this is a fairly specialized situation. She sends her thanks for several of your videos, that more concisely and reasonably explain concepts that I was having difficulty conveying to her. Absolutely. Some people, especially women, have great difficulty racking a slide. I can do it, but it's not easy, and that took lots of practice and using a different racking technique.

Paul: With respect to capacity I ran out of ammo, after reloading my department issued six shot Colt Det. Spl. (total of 12 rounds) in the midst of a gunfight in 1974, and had to end the fight w/a blackjack. I was never without a sufficient supply of ammo again and was glad for the change to the auto loader later in my career.

5:10 Rock and Roll! Another great video. BTW In the 80s I purchased a Ruger Speed Six .357 Magnum revolver. I took it to the range. After the first shot it totally locked up. The problem was that the Remington ammo had a manufacture defect. A divot (with protruding boundary) at the base of the case produced a blockage of the revolving action. A lesson that any firearm's functioning is dependent upon the ammo used.

I have both for CCW use, however my LCR is in 327 Federal Magnum. The 327 is a six shot with plenty of power and the hammerless feature not only reduces snags it also allows repeated shots (all six) from inside coat pocket, (if one was forced to do so). Thanks for your videos, they are very informative and entertaining.

@@Bob5mith And my aunt can rack a pistol slide fine but couldn't pull the DA trigger on a newer Smith 686. A revolver is not automatically the better weak grip/arthritis option, different pistols require different amounts of force, whereas most revolvers are 10+ lbs on the low end for trigger pull. The 380EZ as previously mentioned can be racked with a pinky and has both an optional manual thumb safety and a grip safety, I think that's a great combo for a new shooter/conceal carrier that lacks grip strength and wants an extra safe gun if revolvers have too heavy a trigger. There is no absolute "ideal" option, defaulting to the normal choice doesn't work great for everyone.

Paul - One element of this outstanding video discussed revolvers versus autoloaders (in general). Well I’m 72, but I am NOT the older guy you described who distrusts contemporary, top quality semiautomatics (although I continue to enjoy and to have great confidence in my revolvers, as well). I mention this only because I’ll soon add one more reason to opt for an excellent revolver and I don’t want anyone who reads this to believe it’s because I’m anti-autoloader. The “pro revolver” reason you didn’t mention is NEGLECT. It’s axiomatic that no one should own a firearm and not practice with it, not thoroughly understand how it operates, not appreciate how to use it safely, and not maintain it. With this said, however, many people purchase a handgun for home protection and almost never practice with it or properly maintain it. Of course, this is wrong, but it is also common. All things being equal, the Model 10 Smith that has sat unattended in the nightstand for fifteen or twenty-five years is, in my opinion, a good deal more likely to fire six rounds than (for example) is the Browning Hi Power that has been treated with equal negligence (magazine springs, dead dry rails, and so forth).

I think Craig Benz is referring to accuracy, shot placement ,muscle memory, house clearance tactics etc, etc ....the type of skills that can fade/degrade with time....even manual dexterity can fade with time so you might not forget how to use the weapon but. be unable to use it effectively where as a point & shoot revolver will reduce some of the problems that occur with time/neglect.

I inherited a 38 S&W revolver from my uncle. (Historical note - the 38 Special is a "magnum" round. Yes. Really.) It was so gunked up that the cylinder was fairly badly out of time. But, although enough lead came out the side to be annoying, it still shot. I personally don't have a strong opinion. I have a strong affection for the 1911 because I was four years into my Coast Guard career before I even managed to learn to shoot it.

I’m confused by your comment. I carry many LCR sized autos in my front pocket. I have a s&w 638, a 642 in 22 wmr, yes, both revolvers, but also carry a Springfield armory in 380, a Kimber micro 9 in 9 mm, a Beretta Tomcat in 32 auto, a 22 lr pistol, sorry, can’t thing of the brand, but i have even pocket carried my s&w shield’s in both 9 mm & 45 acp and even my Glock 32 in 357 sig and my Taurus G2 & G3 with the 15 round magazine. I mostly wear cargo pants and shorts, but when necessary i wear a suit. If you have a good pocket holster you can carry every one of these guns i have mentioned in your front pocket. Matter of fact, i use the same holster to carry every one of the the guns in my front pocket. Since i started pocket carrying about 5 years ago it eliminated my need to wear a waist holster 90 to 95 % off the time.

I carry a lcr 327 magnum with 32 H&R magnum ammunition. Equal to 38+p or greater depending on the brand of ammunition, and much much less recoil and one extra round compared to 38 snub nose revolver. Also, double tap makes 327 magnum ammunition that is easy to shoot, and approaches 357 magnum power in a 1 7/8” barrel.

Tac I used to carry my NAA .22 Mag revolver without a holster and pocket lint actually jammed it. So although it’s tiny, I’ve actually witnessed a revolver failing. I’ve never had that problem again since I’ve bought a pocket holster.

I’ve seen two revolver malfunctions. The hand that turns the cylinder broke on my mom’s s&w 638, and a primer backed out and jammed an old .357 I had. Seen plenty of semi autos jam too.

I have seen far more "user caused" malfunctions with semi-autos as compared to revolvers. I've seen mechanical malfunctions with both. The revolver malfunctions took the firearm completely out of service. The semi-autos simply needed the improperly fed cartridge removed and the firearm reloaded. In my experience, the revolver malfunctions have been more catastrophic in nature.

I've had plenty of malfunctions with revolvers. Pull the trigger and the cylinder and hammer lock midway into place. I've had struggles closing and opening the cylinder. These were new Smith and Wesson's and new Rugers. Maybe they don't make them like they used to 40 years ago.

I drive while listening to Paul's channel, and i don't really try to watch my phone - I had the blue tooth on up loud so i could hear... Then when the BAM! BAM! BAM! started, i shouted, God Damn!, and ducked while i frantically reached for the volume nob. The gunfire Paul always warns us about was still going off as i was quickly grabbing my phone to see "what the hell is going on!" Went from a totally relaxed drive, to needing to pull over and recover. True story.

Autoloader is faster to reload, however, if you were on your last round in the LC9, you would have to load mag, then rack the slide to put one in the chamber which would be a little slower. Love your videos Paul!

You don't have to rack the slide, just disengage the slide lock. Add a 1/4 second to the time if necessary. Also, if you keep track of the rounds you've fired you can reload with the last round in the chamber. Of course, in an actual life or death situation it's pretty difficult to count your shots... I carry a revolver, btw. A Ruger LCR in .357, because slower reload is not my concern.

Great presentation as always. Excellent points on mechanics, handling, and crimp jump. Years ago when i was still in LE, i went from carrying my SP-101 off duty, to my Kahr P9. Weight was the main factor, but 3 more rounds didn't hurt. Working and living in a town of 5000 meant that i was more likely to get involved in something off duty. As it turns out, i had to assist another officer on my way home at about 0300 pne night, around the corner from my house. Had to draw down and cover a suspect with the SP-101 until we got him detained. Capacity is secondary, but it can be an issue, which was the other factor in the switch. Again, the likelihood of getting involved in something made capacity a little more of a factor. But i still went with a single stack. I got fond of a Glock 30 my last few years, but it is bulkier and wider. FWIW, my summertime carry, usually in shorts and a polo shirt, was my Taurus 850 (S&W 642 clone, more or less) in a good pocket holster. I never liked the untucked shirt look very much, so that was my warm weather solution. Anyway, great to see how the channel has grown. Keep up the great content

Show-off, shooting the LC9 with your weak hand. One thing I noticed....if you had shot the LC9 with 1 round in the first mag, you would have the slide lock back...thus adding some time for the reload. Still great stuff regardless.

No, not the same at all, ggrandcz. Releasing the slide adds another step that takes a bit of additional time regardless of whether you counted your rounds or not. And anyone can count to five.

I don’t think the real issue with crimp jump is degradation of accuracy. The concern is that the bullet may move far enough forward to protrude from the front of the cylinder and prevent the cylinder from rotating. This has happened to me with my S&W Titanium Revolvers in .38 Special +P. Since the 9x19 case is shorter than the .38 Special not sure if it would occur in the LCR.

Was I the only one to notice this: @ 7:55 when doing the LC9 reload, Paul fires 1 round (the supposed last round) reloads another magazine and fires again....Wait... don't we need to rack the slide to load a round from the fresh mag? This would affect the overall time, maybe a second, definitely not enough to make a difference to the winner of the contest. Not hatin', just statin'. Also, Paul probably didn't even notice because he has trained the way. The average Joe on the other hand, will probably not be thinking... "Oh wait, I'm going to stop shooting the bad guy with one round left in the chamber (keep in mind the difficulty of counting rounds in a high stress situation), then reload with a fresh mag." These are the points of my argument.

Thank you - since there was no demonstration of whether the LC9 can fire 9x17 in comparison to the LCR; I remembered watching someone on KZbin demonstrate firing 380 ACP/9x17 out of a 9mm/9x19 autoloader once. He had to manually cycle the slide in between each shot.

Why mini revolver instead of mini autoloader? Pocket carry! Revolvers(hammerless) are much easier to draw from a pants pocket and the roundish curves conceal better in a pocket than the brick profile of an autoloader.

I'm in my mid 40's so I'm kind of in between the whole revolver vs. auto loader argument and I can say this; it just depends. If I'm at the ATM you grab me out of nowhere, I'd much rather have a .357 snub in my pocket than any 17 round 9mm on my hip. If I'm at the supermarket and some mentally ill individual starts shooting up the place, then yeah, I want the 12-15 or 17 round auto loader on my hip. The only thing that really blows my mind is how guys younger than I am completely disregard revolvers as nothing more than "something my grandpa carried"......ummm OK.......and it happens more often than you'll hear an old guy completely shit on an autoloader. Personally, in a state like Arizona (where there literally are no STATE gun laws) I feel just as secure w/a .357 in my pocket (even if only 5 rounds) just as much as I do a 9mm I've got my hip. I'd take the LCR in .357 over the LC9, I'd take the LC9 over the LCR in 9mm.

I currently pocket carry a Sig P238 I'm thinking about upgrading to something more powerful and also commonality in ammo with my other 9mm pistols so I stopped by the range store and tried out some pistols. When I stuck a Glock 43 in my pocket I got this horrified look from a bye standing instructor who sternly warned me that I needed a pocket holster (which I already knew) but he made a good point about carrying a auto loader in my pocket. I then switched my thinking to a revolver and shot a S&W Airweight 38 and after shooting a few rounds my hand hurt. The grips on the LCR protected my hands better so I'm going with the LCR and your video got me thinking about getting one in 9mm because I don't need to have another caliber of ammo Also there seems to me a trade off between running out of ammo in a revolver and shooting yourself in the balls with an automatic. I'm going with the revolver.

Can you load an "italian" 9x21mm in the revolver? It should have the same measure as a 9x19 except 2mm longer brass.

I don't think it will as the 9mm Luger headspaces at the mouth of the case,so it will mean that that 9x21 will stick out of the cylinder.

An anecdote on why one would choose the LCR over the LCP. My dad recently passed away a couple of months. My dad gave my mom an original model LC9 before he died. She’s 60 and has Multiple Sclerosis, causing neurological damage and grip strength issues. She can’t work the slide on the LC9, it’s way too small and stiff. It’s much easier for her to work the cylinder release and reload the LCR. Also with the Phlster Enigma system it’s very easy for her to conceal carry very comfortably when she goes on her walks around the park.

Excellent video. When I first started shooting handguns I strictly stuck to revolvers. After that I tried my hand at semi-autos. It took a while for me to get used to the slide moving as I shot. It was quite a learning curve but I finally mastered it. There is something more solid in the action when you shoot a revolver. The point I'm trying to make is the movement of the action in a semi-auto may be difficult for some people to get used to. It was for me.
