I AM RICHER I now have a fuller simpler life and that I found true friends with no personal agendas but to enjoy life and watch the grass grow. Life is simpler in the Philippines The excess weight on my shoulders have lightened. I AM SMARTER My mind is sharper and clear to appreciate lifes simple pleasures, to help others then to help myself. I now live and enjoy daily, rather than wake and dread the day before me. LIFE IS GOOD HERE IN THE PHILIPPINES no dought about it 😊

I retired this year at 62 and receive about $1800 a month SS and still live in the USA. I moved to Oregon from California and cut my expenses in half, have a nice one-bedroom apartment, no more credit cards, no more truck payments, and now have about $200 a month left over. Am happy and have a very small saving but good enough for me. I sell on eBay and this gives me something to do and a little extra money each month. Not as fun as the Philippines, but I will survive for now. Take care, Mike

@@MrArcher181 I agree with you. We have our house paid off here in the Philippines and our duplex paid off in the states. I can honestly say we actually spend $2,200.00 a month here in the Philippines and maybe $1,700.00 a month in Florida. Why the difference, because I live right next door to my wife's Father, Mother and younger sister. They cost us $500.00 a month in food and electricity every month. Moving from the Philippines after 10 years made me richer, but smarter I'm not sure. Maybe I'll move back one day since I've managed to save some money hehe. In the Philippines, I only rented since I wanted the freedom to move around if I was bored or if I didn't like my neighbors. Budget is the main thing and we all have different standards of life. The reason many people make wrong choices in the Philippines is alcohol consumption. The fact that it is cheap to drink from sense and gathering does not lead to anything good and it often leads to deaths, accidents, and hospital stays and such things are not free. If you mix that with choosing the wrong woman, you have a financially deadly cocktail. If you are sensible and do what you planned before you leave, it will probably go well. I myself have children of school age and that was an important reason why I moved to another warm country with a high level of education. Probably the first time I haven't been selfish 🙂.

My pension is going to kick in in the fall of 2025. If I prep now I will be able to leave the US quicker when I retire!!! Back when I started in my trade, you only had to work 30 years and I know it’s 35. What a bummer!!! My wife and I are in our 70s and when we retired we decided to sell our house, buy one near our daughter and settle down to a life as grand parents. Everything but the house came to pass. We rented an apartment and found that not having to worry about maintenance, taxes, etc was so comforting that we altered our plans and will live an apartment for the duration. If we need to move in a hurry we can with little or no fuss. Life is good.

You start making money on KZbin at 1,000 subscribers = $140.00 a month You now have 76,000 subscribers = $1,064.00 a month + Social Security = $3,064.00 a month!!! The average middle class person does not even have $1,000 in their savings account. You shouldn't fudge the figures just to make yourself look better. You know all it takes is one trip for a retired person to go to the hospital and their entire savings is wiped out.

You nailed the credit card dynamic in the United States, Paul. What stuns ne is how much people are willing to pay for live entertainment here. People easily pay $1k USD for Taylor swift or Adele concert tickets. Great performers but the prices are nuts . Also , Vegas used to be a value destination, prices there have gone through the roof. I think a lot of people are using their credit cards to buy the nice to have items.

To be clear on the median. The median is a mid point. It's the point where 50% is above that point and 50% is below. One has to think about what the median means in any context. For savings, 50% of the households (I'm assuming that's how the figure is given) have less than $6,000 USD in savings. I think it's safe to say that 75% of households have $10,000 USD or less in savings because with something like income or savings, there's going to be a bell curve and the median is going to be somewhere near the high or low point of that bell curve. Or depending on how you display the data, if you were showing savings based on income, you'd end up with a linear looking graph up to about a certain income level, and then the graph would look like exponential growth as incomes start to get really large. The main point being is you have to think about a median very carefully before you make assumptions on what it means. 50% above and 50% below (the middle point) is typically much better though in looking at financial data for a population for getting an idea how a good chunk of that population is doing.

It's all relative to the goal post. The level of economic security is very different when a $2,500 SS check when the average household income in the Philippines is $400/month (that's over 5x than a typical household). When talking to other expats, everyone left the US for a reason... be it lack of $$$, chasing young girls (or boys), or running away from responsibility. Does that make you richer or smarter than someone who is in the US? It just depends on each person.
@charlesphilhower1452
@charlesphilhower1452 Жыл бұрын
Actually it does make the average person richer because the cost of living is lower, especially for someone retiring and is not In position to make a lot of money. As far as being smarter, there has been a dumbing down and entitlement in the USA and people tend to be more resource than so many entitled Americans. Family values are also more important, the way things used to be in the USA and because of that many people are happier and better adjusted psychologically.😊
@ghostdance56
@ghostdance56 Жыл бұрын
You just wrote that it makes you richer, 5X's typical household, hello?? While thats a little inaccurate, if you're in the Philippines, that IS your goal post. None other matters. And don't forget sexual crimes with young boys or girls are FAR more harshly punished in a Filipino prison than they are in the US, so pedophiles while existing, do not roam freely in the Philippines, in fact, far less than in the US, which seems to now be incorporating the grooming of children into it's culture. You can be jailed for cheating on a spouse or being with a young person who's not part of your family as well in the Philippines. But you're wildest speculation has to do with 'running away from responsibility'? Thats simply ridiculous, and no expats told you that because no one talks about themself like that. What they will tell you is that life in the US became boring, offered nothing fulfilling or exciting to them, or that Americans generally have become just creepy and unfriendly, not to mention the rampant crime. Most expats are retirees who just want to have something interesting or fun to do, rather than rot away in a society that offers them little at their age. Who do you think you're fooling? Keep your hostility and hangups to yourself.

Are you smarter? Well yes. Is that an opinion? No. It's a part of life. When you exercise your mind, it makes you smarter no matter how old you are. So moving to the Philippines is like learning a new language. You need to think about everything that is new, and everything that you encounter like changing money and acquiring services. When the mind is active(insead of reflexes of every day life) you grow more brain cells and connections. That makes you smarter. Change requires growth and exercising your brain is a great thing which makes you smarter. As for less expensive life, I would have to say that Baby Mae makes your life less expensive just by being who she is. You are probably the expensive one in the relationship only by being an American and having needs. Sorry...

There is a lot to comment on this vlog. You are an American who lived the American dream. Some dreams turned into nightmares like yours because you were not insistant on living within your means. The American dream can be a reality, but it takes work and balance needed to make it happen. Finding the right partner is a prerequisit. We do our best to choose wisely. Your retirement involved a move to the beautiful Philippines. Your fatherly duties were complete and it was now all about Paul and you were justified in that decision. A tough beginning, but where you landed ended in success. I would think that because of the location you live where there are many foreigners, life with familiarity worked very well. You were steadfast in keeping your masculinity in every aspect of that word.......................your retirement, your life, your way. You met a filipina who fit into that lifestyle and she lives her life and lets you live yours and you both meet in the middle at the end of each day and balance a relationship perfectly. You did not pick a filipina who was too young and immature, had no children to tie both of you to a life you had already lived and was not wanting to do a repeat. You rent and have no ties that would put stress on your life. You are now in a place where the man you were is the man you worked hard to be. Live life to the fullest, you desire that.

@@sandrabentley8111 I agree. With the influx of foreigners, that may change as the foreigners can provide what the new generation of filipina wants and if one gets it, why can't the other. Gossip must be rampant in Dumageti as the simple woman is taking on a whole new lifestyle. Time changes things and I hope after watching so many vlogs that this particular situation is successful.

A rich person is someone with high income or net worth who tends to be self indulgent. You can spot a rich person a mile away, as Paul says, they will be driving the expensive vehicle, their watch or jewelry will flash brightly under the sun, they will own two or more of things for which a person needs only one. A wealthy person sees money differently, as a steward of the gifts bestowed upon them by good fortune or their own efforts, and will seek a simple life punctuated by quiet charitable contribution and non-materialism. You'll see them coming when they know you have a need, as they are often looking for ways to lift others up.

Hey Paul... I'm Jerry. Have been watching your videos for a while now and enjoy them immensely. You have the ability to express yourself very clearly. Anyway, I've been living in Davao City since September of 2022 and remember watching your video about TRT (testosterone replacement therapy). I would like to ask you a quick question about the medical treatment you found in Dumaguete but don't know how to contact you (I'm a social media neophyte). Your help would be most appreciated. Thanks!

My experience with credit cards in the US is a love/hate relationship, but I have cards that offer no interest when spending a certain amount of money, and spreading the payment out over a period of months. I haven't paid interest on a credit card in a couple years, and even then it was for 2 - 3 months. I can go back about 3 - 4 years and that's the last time I was paying interest on a regular basis for a credit card. Also, by using a credit card for gas, the inverse is true for me in that it keeps me from going into the store because you can pay at the pump. I'd be more likely to spend money buying a drink or snacks if I used cash, because I'd have to go into the store. So, credit cards are a neutral thing. For me I like the convenience. I can use them to pay bills instead of a bank. Maybe this sounds strange but I earn rewards for using my card to pay bills for which I get free money. So, I pay all my bills via direct withdrawal from credit cards so I don't have to worry about writing checks, EXCEPT to the credit card companies. This keeps bank info away from these businesses so less chance my info can get hacked other than credit card info, but credit cards are forced to eat illegal charges to a person's card. Banks have different rules. I find it safer to use credit cards in most situations in the US than a bank account. That's just me and my experience. But you have to learn to control yourself. It's very easy to rack up $10,000 USD worth of credit card debt when you don't have to pay interest AND you have the ability to make large payments, so spending becomes too easy.

"Keeping up the the Jones who are broke buying things with money they don't have to impress people they don't really like" Dave Ramsey from the book The Total Money Makeover. Book that changed my life at 42 years old. When I read that line in the book I laughed because its so true. You really are living the dream over there as Dave Ramsey would say. Loved the video today. My father was a successful businessman. But after he went to the nursing home he sat with an interesting group at breakfast an coffee. There was prominent lawyer and politician and also a bigger businessman who was a multimillionaire. They all interacted like old buddies and there was not much consciousness of class differences. Dad was so amazed and one day he told me... "When we are here in the nursing home, we are all the same!" Old Paul sounds like that when he is talking about being in the Philippines as an old cadger and it sounds the same.
