Wonderful Paul....thank you. It is easy to lose the opportunity to commune and connect with nature when wild camping, bushcrafting by busying ourselves with kit and tasks, forgetting to find and maintain our balance. Your talk re emphasised this and its importance to me. Happy wandering. Paul :)

great presentation. i want to point out one phenomenon mentioned there, that is, people turn to bushcraft (become a creator) because they work in a corporate office in front of a computer and they don't do anything physical. this speaks volumes of our work culture and society in general, how far we've left interaction with nature behind us and our brains got very lazy because "i'll google it when i need that information." in bushcraft, you have to store all the information in your head and have to be able to recall it on the spot, especially in an emergency situation. there's no google in nature. furthermore, a lot of people in corporate jobs are fed up with the office work because they indeed don't create anything with their hands, in other words, there's no physical result of their effort. i've heard this problem from coaches, etc, when people just give up their office work and make a 180 degree turn and become a baker/plumber, etc. i think no matter hard we try to make everything "smart," we can't deny the fact that making, creating things is basically as old as humans, and our collective unconscious/primitive instincs will surface in one way or another.

Well as you know he was attempting to tie together a lot of strands of natural philosophy with religion. I would argue that bushcraft is at the very practical end of natural philosphy ;-)
@NorwegianWoods
@NorwegianWoods 8 жыл бұрын
You are absolutely right about that. Religion could also be seen as the very metaphysical end of bushcraft :)

Ya that's right Canada kicks ass! :).......Awesome Paul, great information for beginners but also a strong foundation for anyone getting into or studying bushcraft/survival. I also felt at time like it was a motivational speech for those of us that have gotten a little lazy in our hands on of bushcraft. best regards brother!

Thanks for a good video. One major problem i see a Swede is that you are not allowed to cut down trees (even small ones), even break twigs or set fires (during a certain time in the summer), it seems to easy when others go out and just do the things. I am lucky enough to have access to a family members land which i will visit later this year and test the things i've learned (like making an emergency shelter), but there are others who want to learn these things and have no way of practising them. I've only made the first steps of making a fire (firesteel with some tinder onto a rock), but i'm going to test it fully in wet/snowy conditions because i know if i can do it then, i can do it in any conditions. Also living in a large city, you don't have access to much outdoors/survival training courses, most of them are far away and there is simply not much time to get out and participate. This is just sad. As for mushrooms, i've learned that they do not contain much in the for of nutrients and they should be avoided, especially since you could die if you misidentify the species and ingest something like the white fly mushroom. I have a question: How well do piston lighters work and can they use natural tinder like birch bark shavings? I haven't seen them being talked of much on youtube, it's like everyone and their grandma focus on firesteel and bowdrills.

Hey Tom, I think you made the right choice - being on Dartmoor for the week. I'll always support someone's decision to head for the woods or the hills over anything, including one of my own talks :-) Glad you had a great time. Hope to see you in the future. ATB, Paul

Thoroughly enjoyed your presentation Paul. I was enthused that it was apparently youngsters who asked the most questions at the conclusion. I often wonder why we adults can be so inhibited. Best wishes. Douglas.

Fantastic presentation, it was interesting, complex but still easily understandable. You reminded me about some of my shotcomings, and motivated me to improve. I've learnt a lot. Thank you very much for uploading it. :) (Let me just note something minor: If you plan on using this presentation again, I would think of cutting out, or replacing the zombie picture, to make it more child friendly, some are sensitive to these kind of staff. And it isn't really important. It's not a relevant matter though, just thought I should mention it. :) )

Good point re the zombie pic. I don't want to give anyone nightmares. It was, of course, meant in jest. There is so much zombie/walking dead stuff around these days, it seems commonplace. Maybe not for everyone. As for your other comments, I'm glad you found the presentation engaging and thought provoking yet easily consumable, as well as motivational. Good feedback. Thank you. Take care, Paul
