As someone that is slowly saving for gear to get into wild camping, I jumped at the chance to enter your raffle. It'll help immensely as I have very little and can only save a small amount each month. Wish me luck!

My first tent, which i got this year is the Eurohike Ribble 3, Great price at the time, and don't get me wrong fantastic tent but as a beginner to tents, i didn't realise how much of an ass tunnel tents could be! I slept in it for the first time the other week as temperatures plumeted and it hit the negative temps, I know it's not a comment related to this video as such, but I just thought it's a good place to share!

Good vid. Great sunrise. Our old gear is getting to be just that. Some of my stuff is close to or more than fifty years old. Some still as good as new. Some , we'll see. All good from east KY USA

I’ve just bought a new Vango Radon UL-1, and that too still has those bloomin velcro loops!..🤷🏻‍♂️ bit annoying really, surely a plastic clip system would be better!? It looks a good shelter though, saved £76 on a BF deal…looking forward to taking it out on its maiden voyage wild camp, in the next few days. 👍🏻

I put my similar vintage Banshee 200 through one of the heavy September rain storms this year and it survived! I do wish I'd taken my Vango Tempest 300XD though as it's newer (only 8 years old!) and bigger so the extra space makes it easier to keep things away from the sides. I love both these tents - I don't want to think about them getting too old and needing to be replaced!

Hi Paul, My GOAT tent is now my Naturehike Cloudup3 silicone coated nylon. It stood up to 40mph winds and heavy rain in Nova Scotia. It came with a footprint and provides a small vestibule at a very reasonable price. We are heading from Canada to the Isle of Skye next summer and will test it further there. Cheers.

I’ve seen a few comments about Fabsil making seam tape come off and that you should avoid the seams? Also had a mate that used Fabsil on and old tent. Seam tape came away and he mentioned it going white 🤷🏻‍♂️ I suppose the problem is, when a tent is older you don’t know if it’s due to material breakdown or not 🤷🏻‍♂️ hard to say. Cheers, Gary B

Hard to judge from the video of course but it looks like just condensation on the banshee inside and out. I had exactly the same on Hadrian’s wall the other week camping is early morning low cloud as well as a warm tent but never cook inside my tent does are fully open or I do it outside proper.

Interesting 🙂. The first tent I bought for wild camping was an Elixir 2. She's still going strong. I had a military roll mat and sleeping bag and big old military mess tins to eat from. The first kettle I took was an old whistler that was really bulky. Happy days 🙂🙂. Now I've improved on everything so camping is much nicer.

The fly on my Wild Country Sirocco went the same way as your Banshee a couple of years ago. Inner coating and seam tape delaminating from the fabric. Being a Scotsman (unusually conforming to stereotype 😔) I was tempted to give it a coat of Solarproof or Fabsil, but as it was over 20 years old, I splashed the cash and treated myself to a new tent instead 😊

Interesting. I live in the Isle of Axholme, near the top in Crowle. Might have to venture there one day, I am normally bikepacking and woods are few and far between around here so its generally Laughton Woods or much further South say Clipstone Forest in Notts.

It's the rucky that I struggle with. As a short female should I be looking at how it fits me, or should I look at the litre size. I'm still not sure how much will go into what size. If I buy a 60ltre will it drown me. If I buy a 50ltre will it not take all my gear. So many things to think of.
@TylerJohnson-th9mi
@TylerJohnson-th9mi 3 күн бұрын
50l is all you need. But starting out gear usually requires closer to 60l. I would suggest looking at roll top packs. If you get a 60l you can just add a roll or two and it’ll fit your gear like a 50l.
@PaulMessner
@PaulMessner 3 күн бұрын
Fit is the most important thing. If you go to a decent outdoors shop they will help with the sizing of fit. People have different torso lengths so you need the right pack for your torso although you can buy adjustable packs. As for volume I often recommend using a household item like a storage container or kitchen bin to try fitting your gear in. We have a 50l waste bin and I could use that to see what gear I can fit in that volume.

Closest I've seen one of your camps looking like ours. In a forest, with the boys with some proper food in a cauldron. Nice one Paul! Although there's definitely not been enough spears made to protect the camp.....from invaders.... that has never happpened.

Sadly man made materials break down over time, regardless of use or exposure to the elements / UV light. Nothing lasts for ever. SImilar happened to my Vango Hurricane Beta, especially the bathtub. Also a trusty pair of ski boots, the construction of the boot liners broke down, became sticky and the foam disintegrated.

Polyurethane seems to be degradable which is maybe why they didn't used to use it. A pair of walking boots could last 20 years but now you are lucky to get 2-3 before the soles start to let go. Yes they are more comfortable these days but with the old boots you could use an insole that could be replaced. Things aren't made to last more than 2-3 years these days and we've been conditioned to believe that is the standard.

I had Dutch army bedroll bivi which was the first ‘wild camping’ sort of sleep system. I used it with an army basha but it was limited to how I would use it. I had the banshee around that time and I don’t actually recall which came first but I used the tent mainly on campsites with the odd bushcraft venture.
