Hey Paul I was wondering. If I have a unpainted asbestos positive popcorn ceiling would you recommend scraping 1st and then skim coating? Or is it worth skim coating over?
@nathanwofford86463 жыл бұрын
When doing a large popcorn ceiling removal I like to use my professional paint sprayer at 3/4 pressure to spray the texture with hot water. Give each section about 3 passes then let it set for about 6 to 10 minutes after spraying and it will scrape off smoothly just like applying jpint compound. Spray an area of up to about 25' (generally the width of the room) by about 15' to 20' (depending on how many people are scraping). This way it does not begin to dry before you are removing the ceiling texture.

Can I skimcoat popcorn ceiling with trim? If I remove the trim, would I be potentially releasing asbestos in the air?

I usually have a spray bottle of water to squirt on the ceiling to see if there's a color change to check for paint.

Excellent Video. My house is built in 1975 and has popcorn ceilings. Do I need to test for asbestos before skim coating them if I'm not removing them first and just coating over the top of the popcorn? Does it depend on if they have been painted before?

Hey Paul. My house was built in 1988 with popcorn. Last year I had a ceiling/painting contractor scrape down the popcorn and apply skim. I am now finding in some rooms that the skim is cracking and falling down in chunks. I can see the original ceiling drywall. Do I peel away any skim that is loose and then apply the USG all purpose compound right on the original ceiling drywall? They did this work in very hot/humid temps in GA and I am wondering if the AC in my house was not keeping the environment cool enough as they worked. I have NO water issues from bathrooms or gutter leaks that would be causing this issue. Thanks

Great video. I’m in an apartment which has a popcorn ceiling. I had a piece tested and it does have asbestos, so I’m not looking to scrape it. I’m sure the ceiling has been painted in the past. Based On Your video, I’m assuming I should just hire someone to skim coat it. Can that be done, even though there is asbestos? Do you do side jobs🙂

Another great video Paul!!! Here's a question for you, I have no where near the skills you do, so most of the time if I have a large area of popcorn that can't be removed I normally just cover it with 1/4 inch drywall. What are your thoughts on that for a non professional drywall skin coater??? Thanks bud

Good info on popcorn ceiling, my question is on my bedroom walls instead of just covering screw heads they got covered like they do on two pieces of of sheetrock how can I fix that could I skimcoat in between those 16in little pillars on my walls and which joint compound would be better.

#DrywallTube - Great Videos! If the popcorn ceiling has been painted with Latex High Gloss, can you still skim coat it? Also, you mentioned that you recommend All Purpose because it's thicker and has more adhesive, can it be used straight out of the bucket or does it need to be mixed with anything else to get a imperfect smooth finish? Thank you in advance!

You’d have to test a section with a puddy knife if it’s loose . Use a scraper with an extension and cover everything . Because of a huge mess . Or like he’s doing if it’s thick and hard to scrape you’ll have to skim coat them .

Painted over popcorn will definitely come off, I just did. My recipe was: drop plastic sheet to protect walls from moisture, cover the floor, since water will drip on the floor in the next step. Do this in the evening: soak the ceiling with hot water, I used a garden sprayer. Wait for an hour or so, soak again. Apply a lot of water. When looking at angle, it should shine, and not be mate. Do that before going to bed. Leave overnight. Next morning, before breakfast, spray again. Always use hot water - it will help to soften the paint. Have breakfast, and, as you might have guessed, soak again. That was enough for me to start going. At this point, I found that once I break through the surface of paint, popcorn was pealing off like a wallpaper - in one uniform sheet. I held the scraper at a minimum angle, just to make sure I'm not digging into drywall paper. I used a 5" knife, since I felt I needed to have a bit more control over what I'm doing. To minimize chance of dust, you can use a bottle sprayer, and keep spraying the edge where popcorn is attached to the drywall. As you will be pushing the knife, you will be pushing water in front of it as well. Once popcorn is gone, keep passing with a knife, removing excess water from drywall paper. The work was way easier than I anticipated, cleanup took my way longer than scraping. Ware a good dust respirator, since you might still be exposed to asbestos. I was doing a corridor, that had access to the attic. After finishing scraping, I opened access to the attic slightly, opened a window in the basement to create a chimney effect in order to get air out. Otherwise, you may want to use fans, and create negative pressure in the room you are working.
