Thank you for the good information! To use a USG ALL- PURPOSE joint compound, which comes in a five-gallon bucket and has a dark-green lid - it has a lot more glue in it which allows a better adhesion 👍

You're awesome, unfortunately just watching these videos isnt enough to get as proficient as you are. This takes alot of practice. These are great videos and I love the head cam to learn what to do with the knife. Very well put together teaching aids. Props!

Do you use a primer before skim coating over painted texture walls? Some of mine are flat paint but some are a semi gloss paint. Wondered if it's better to prime first. Thanks for your videos!! These are a great help updating our home!!

I have a question because of confusion i read on the internet...some says apply paint primer first before skim coat while others apply skim coat first then primer and then top coat.. So my question is apply paint primer first before skim coat or the other way around?

Hi Paul, I am doing a small bathroom ceiling with mega issues. 1. there is spray foam insulation on the other side of the ceiling (on the "floor" of the attic) so the old drywall can't be removed. 2. The old drywall is damaged to the point that just putting another sheet of drywall over the old is far easier than trying to repair it somehow, since it can't be removed at all without damaging the insulation. 3. The ceiling isn't even/level across the bathroom. 4. The shape of the bathroom is irregular, it's two squares joined corner to corner (with part of the corner removed)- think hourglass. The uneveness is mostly between the two parts of the hourglass, so there's basically a transition. 5. unfortunately that transition region doesn't have anything to screw or nail into that's wood, just the older drywall, which happens to be pretty wrecked there. I used some shims and put up another layer of drywall up on the ceiling to take care of 3 & 4; not perfect but will do (except something creative has to be done for the fan). The problem is #5. The 2nd layer of drywall in that transition area sags some, and I've not been able to figure out how to affix it up to get a good seam. I haven't figured out how to tape it without whatever I do to hold things up causing me problems (like putting dents in the new gypsum, or the mud/tape sticking to whatever I use to hold it up, or....). Of course, I can't get a good skim coat on it because of this issue, either. It's gotta be flat, level, and baby butt smooth; the whole bathroom gets painted black in some form, with parts of the walls getting additional treatments to break that up, but the ceiling will be gloss black. That gloss black will be incredibly unforgiving if it's not, as I said, flat/level/smooth. What would you do?

Hey Paul, just took old 1930's tin tiles off a plaster wall. Trying to remove all the glue and we tend to gouge the wall. Should we fill in the deep gouges and let them dry before skim coating?

@@PaulPeck unfortunatelly Amazon "doesn't ship to my selected delivery location". Neither the alternative u suggested. Would other product from Zinsser do the trick? The B-I-N or the Bulls Eye 1-2-3? Or just any shellac? I am very frustrated cause not any of the products u use can be found in The Netherlands. Considering i've never did this in my life, i'm left with guessing what product would be similar to u'res. I feel overwhelmed and abandoned any attempt. Would joint compound from Knauff also work, for ex. Fix & Finish or Gyproc stuc pasta? I appreciate any help 🙏

I am in the process of buying a house built in the 1870's with plaster walls. Covered in wallpaper that is 100 years old, dirty and peeling. Every wall will need to be redone after the wallpaper comes off. What would you recommend for skimming a plaster wall vs. drywall (there is no drywall in this house). Thanks.

Built a garage back in 03 and my ceilings were less than perfect to say the least. Now im back to correcting the irregularites. Tape knife ends are rolled towards one side ever so slightly so when your skim coating, which side do you want to use for best results? Have you used the roller method for large ceilings such as a 24x26?
@splash59746 жыл бұрын
Most knives and trowels have a bow in them. Try and find which side has the ends of the knife slightly tipped away. Keep that side out, towards you, so the edges dont dig in and leave lines on your wall or ceiling
@Reliable1102Intel6 жыл бұрын
splash have you skim coated a large ceiling and did you roll it or just trowell it?
@splash59746 жыл бұрын
@@Reliable1102Intel I havent done a huge area... But it seems either way is fine. Rolling it just saves on applying it with a trowel/knife, which might be helpful on the arm and shoulder Lol But i dont think it matters.

Hey James, I’d say 1.5 to 2 5 gallon buckets for the walls and ceilings in a room that size.👍🏻 Here’s a drywall butt joint video that might help you get a flatter butt joint by adding mud on each side of the actual joint: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYvYZ62qf8d4ask I hope this helps.
