Finally The First Ford Friday Funday ! Loved the Friday VW special. I discovered long ago that in the Antique Car club I belonged to at the time, more than a few members also drove a VW beetle. The man who wouldn't sell one bolt or do-hickey from his vast 1926-27 Model T collection went to Germany, toured the factory, and ordered his new VW which was shipped back to Illinois. This was in the late 60's. At the time it still cost him under $2000 total with shipping. I was impressed by those little beetles. After I bought a very low mileage 1926 T touring project from the 'man who would sell nothing' I traded my 1954 Ford two door customline sedan for an unusual thing called a 1957 VW beetle with the folding sunroof. Unusual because here in corn country in the 60's and 70's VW's were mostly unseen and unknown. It had a small oval rear window and a lever under the dash to flip when the gas tank went nearly empty. Sorta like an old Harley I had. I have no idea what fuel mileage it got but we drove it 170+ miles from home to Chicago and back before filling the tank at our favorite hometown filling station! Most of that trip was on a highway called Rt 66. Two kids eventually rode in the space behind the rear seat for fun. They watched 4th of July fireworks from the canvas covered hole in the top. I hauled Christmas trees and pulled a new Chevy Corvair from deep sand..... I'd promised the Chevy dealer I'd never tell! Corvairs supposedly went thru anything. In 1969 my wife and I drove from central Illinois to the middle of NY to a concert in the middle of a cow pasture, camped in the VW, and returned to Illinois. A small event few remember. I have more memories of VW's than Model A's. Maybe I shoulda bought a VW instead of my last Model A.😀

In the '70's and '80's, I owned a '63 and '68 bugs and a '69 Karmann Ghia. Back then you could buy old VW's dirt cheap -- there were still a lot of them around. I was young and poor, and these were cheap daily driven beater cars for me, not collectibles. I drove them until it became cheaper to buy another beater car than fix them. The '63 had a newer engine in it. All of these cars had either 1500cc or 1600cc engines, which, IIRC were 55-60 horsepower. So, power was adequate (just barely) for a daily driven car. These would pull the uphills on I-70 in the Colorado mountains at 55mph (the speed limit then), at full throttle in third gear. I used to get about 25 mpg in the city, and 30 or so highway. The latter figure was mostly mountain driving, where I would routinely coast engine off on downhills. You could do this reasonably safely in a bug. The transmissions would lubricate adequately when coasting. RVers used to like to use them as tow cars, as they cound be flat towed just by putting the transmission in neutral, and they were light. Since they were manual transmission, all you needed to do when you needed the engine again was turn the switch on, put them in gear, and let out the clutch. They didn't have power steering or power brakes, and didn't really need them because they were so light. By this time, they all had gas gauges too. The '63 had a mechanical gauge. There was no electrical connection, just a cable that connected the float to the gauge. Probably the worst aspect of daily driving a bug (at least in the winter) was that the heaters sucked. They drew air from the engine cooling fan, and ran it through an exhaust heat exchanger (so essentially manifold heaters). Since the air was moved by the engine fan, the amount of heat and air flow varied with engine rpm. In city driving, you could get a little more heat out of them by running in third gear instead of fourth, to keep the revs up. The only time the heater really worked well was on those mountain uphills, when you were running the engine at full throttle and close to maximum RPM. The bugs' top speed was about '75 on the level. With a bit of a downgrade or a tail wind, you might coax them to 80 or 85. Not that driving a bug that fast is really a good idea, but I was young and thought I was immortal. The Ghia would do 85 on the level, due to either better aerodynamics or lighter weight than the bugs. Which car was better? I would give a slight edge to the bug. You had a 4 speed synchronized transmission, rather than the three speed crash box of the model A. The bug, at least by the late '60's, had a distinct advantage in speed and power too. The model A, at least the bigger ones, had the edge in capacity. The front trunk of the bugs was pretty small -- you actually had a bit more room behind the back seat. Also, the back of the back seat could be folded down and give you a decent amount of space if you didn't need the back seat for passengers. Both cars though, were masterpieces of economic transportation and elegant simplicity.

So sorry to hear about your back! Get well soon. I have been watching your videos for several months and was thinking how similar the Model A is to the VW. I have a 74 VW Thing that still uses side curtains. Sometimes have to get creative to get it home. I had an accelerator cable break once, ended up using a spare tail light bulb to wedge the carburetor open enough to drive home without the gas pedal. A policeman stopped me as I crawled up a hill at 5 MPH with the fourways on, and wanted to know what the problem was. After opening the engine cover and seeing the "carburetor bulb" stare back at him I was told to carefully continue my journey home. Every drive an adventure. Gotta love old cars!!

Don't know how I happened to stumble across this but glad I did. Both VW & the "A" Ford have drawn my attention for many years. Over the years from 1966 to 2012 I think I have owned 25 or more VWs of all types from 1956 thru 1972 years, and from 1964 to 1979 I owned a 1930 Ford Coupe and a 1931 Ford Steel roof pickup. At that time, I lived in different parts of Arizona. I feel you are right in placing them together in the same class of vehicle. Have spent many enjoyable hours "playing" with both type vehicles. During the 1970s I taught my kids vehicle maintenance on these and to this day my daughter (at age 61) still does her own oil changes. I am now retired (age 82) and live in the Philippines so I only maintain my driver here which happens to be a 3 cyl mini-mini van. Does my heart good to know that there are still some young folks (such as the 18 year old young man) around to keep these old irons running. Also good to see some other elders (Rich Davis) still doing their thing. Thank You for doing what you do to keep the legacy going. Brought back a lot of memories. Fred

Loved this video. I have had beetles for most of my driving adult life. I got the opportunity to succumb to the wishes of my wife and bless a young man with my bug at one point in time, so that I could get something “dependable”. I want to get a Model A now due to my classic car love “maturing”. I would love to have a car that is even more amazing than my old bug. Don’t get me wrong I loved “Roscoe” (my bug) excessively. I am hoping to get a car, in my opinion, that is even more outstanding that the bug

@@kenmen100 Yes. My stupid computer machine wouldn't save the video properly. I was up way past my bedtime trying to get it to cooperate last night. I finally gave up and went to bed. All that video is wasted.

40mph cruising speed and only 20s for fuel economy? Something is very wrong with that vw. I’ve had MANY over the years. My 40hp VWs would do 75mph flat out, maybe even a bit more and return 28-32mpg average. A vw has the same top and “cruising” speed. I always found my 40hp was perfectly comfortable at 65-70 all day long, my 50hp 1300 a few mph over and a 1600 late model Bug was fine at 75-80 and mid-high 20s for fuel economy.

If we make believe Henry built it and call it a Model VW it could be considered an improvement. Another sacred idol with the same qualities as it's predecessor. I get the Model A thing, maybe nothing but a bug could supplant it.

OK now I know your VW is broken, 35-40 MPH????? any 25HP VW will easily maintain 60 MPH, my 36HP VWs will cruise at 70 MPH, and I have had 36HP up to 84 MPH with a bit of a tail wind, please fix your '51 VW!

Sorry but, even though the VW is cute and may have some similarities, it doesn't match the Model A and I don't mean to be rude One of the reasons is that although it had all the Hitler era legend, Hitler did not deliver any or barely any of the cars to all the germans who had payed monthly installments or coupons for them. He started WWII and after it ended it was up to the british military engineers to start real production for the western allied forces and have some means of transportation. It does not have the quality Ford deliberately built into his cars.
