Driving a 2017 ES250 now. No way this feels or drive like a Camry. It's like saying an Audi A4 drives like a VW Jetta. While it's not super fast or does it corner hard, it's so comfortable that you're relax most of the time.

No one buys a lexus for its driving dynamics and handling and all that stuff that car enthusiast bother about; lexus is all about luxury cars that promotes comfortable and smooth driving experience, so I dont think its fair when Hafriz compares the ES to its German rivals just because they are in the same segment with similar price point.

Stanley Stephen Abok I believe I did make a fair case for the ES here. As I mentioned in the review, dynamics is not the reason you'd buy a Lexus in the first place, and it does excel in making its occupants feel comfortable. But of course, I still need to be judge it against its relevant market rivals.

I also understand that comparing it to its market rivals is an important part of any automobile reviews but personally this time I feel that the ES has been put to a disadvantage since its targeted consumers are totally different compared to Merc, Bmw or Audi, who prefer sportier driving and stuff. Nonetheless, this review is as good as always and keep up the good work 👍

One of the best reviews I've read. But isn't this car based on the Avalon rather than the Camary chassis? I would compare the GS series to those German makes since it has the more sporty drive. The ES should be compared to some American cars that also emphasize comfort over handling. Then the comparison would be apples-apples. The GS would be apples-apples with those German models, IMO. Maybe the ES is in class unto itself and should be examined for dependability and reliability. How would those German rivals compare using those qualifiers? Those are the ones that ES buyers seem more concerned with. I would much more appreciate a comparison on that criteria over a ten-year period to those so-called German rivals. That's the comparison I, and many others, really want. Compare the car's strengths to the other cars, not perceived weaknesses, which the manufacturer doesn't taught to begin with, to those rivals.

The car's platform is closer to the Avalon, yes, but since we don't get that car in Malaysia, the Camry is its closest relative. Plus, they all share the TNGA modular platform now instead of unique bases like the previous generation models. Also, the GS has been discontinued globally, so the ES is the only model left in the class, hence the comparisons to the BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. What we are doing here is placing the cars on a level playing field, comparing their strengths and weaknesses against each other. And since we are reviewing new cars, we can't objectively comment on their dependability or reliability, unless of course they break down while in our care. There's no real guarantee that a car with a solid reputation in terms of reliability will actually be rock-solid in the next 10 years. And vice versa, other cars with less than bulletproof rep may prove to be more reliable in the long run. We've personally seen things go both ways.

Mercedes is a trade mark brand for my family starting from my late father for over 20yrs. Lexus is my choice soon for comfort purpose. I would love to try ES soon and the LS if the ES give me the comfort level im looking for. As for bmw, well, many of my friends have bad experience on bmw especially after 3yrs old bmw cars. It always starts oil leaking somewhere and radiator problems. My uncle owns car shop, his sales for bmw , audi , volvo on radiators and other oil leakings parts are top on his list turn over.

I think this es is direct competitor to the s60 rather than longitudinal layout models from the germans...u knew it better hafriz, why the price is much cheaper when manufacturer opt for transverse engine bay. It is basic knowledge of every petrolhead including nubie like me..so get ur fact straight rather than this bias reviews~ i believe this happened twice already with lexus at ur hand..

Aman Virk I was looking for Mercedes, but a whole lot of ex-continental car owners that I know , 16 of them all advised me, please go for Lexus as they were going back for Japanese’s. The horror stories were everywhere, I didn’t hear a positive review from the owners at all to be frank, this is an extreme contrast to the auto experts. The worst cases like stranded car in the middle of the spiralling upward car park passage that needed traffic police to help, daily checking and top up of engine oil, the car sudden stalled not once but 4 times in 6 months and unable to diagnose the problem, 4 times gearbox replacement during the warranty period and sold it before warranty ended.... sigh!

Nice review and do admit that it is a wonderful car to be chauffered into..i used to enjoy my weekly drive trips from dubai to abu dhabi in the previous gen es350....but in Malaysia..sorry to say...people in UMWT/lexus Malaysia who specced and priced this car....snorted way too much 'white powder'...way underspecced for its asking price...better off getting a volvo s60 t8 r awb.
