The phrase I use to say to my players is to "Listen Sideways". Amateur players are usually too focused on playing the notes and miss the dynamics and articulation instructions. I try to get them to understand that the notes are just the pitch but the other markings are The Music. Its so hard to get amateurs, weekend warriors or whatever name one uses, to become confident enough to trust their note and rhythm reading level and to start looking at the music that is written around the notes. But when they do even they will look at me with a huge grin on their faces because they know just how good it sounded and felt. Love your vids mate. You present a lot of concepts that are just not talked about by MDs, KZbinrs, teachers etc. I don't have a trombone channel, I'm a car detailer so my channel is all about that subject, but I'm thinking starting another channel and doing some vids on phrasing, style and interpretation.

I’m a percussionist at my High School this year and I asked my director if I could switch to trombone and he said yes. Tough part is next year I move into the advanced band while being a rookie trombone player. It also sucks that I only have 6 months to get to that level but I’m really excited and up to the challenge.

I am so glad, you and others are getting this type of info out there. It is appreciated greatly. I always get a piece of something from your stuff. Even when some of it goes over my head.

I’ve gotten ripped for saying the bass player is more important than the drummer! Nice to hear somebody agrees. Of course it’s different if the band is led by a drummer, like Louie Bellson or Buddy…

Good stuff, Bro. I play first in a swing band. Our lead trumpet is a prima donna. It's difficult to get a cohesive sound. Everybody plays too loud.

I realized this as a trumpet player in a big band. I had an outdoor gig with my swing band and realized that I can pull back A LOT in my playing since I worked for so long to learn how to project my sound. I realize that as a section player and even a lead player, I can back off a little bit and my sound will still cut through.

@@pokemaniac0075 yep this happens through lots n lots of playing n building up embouchure at my age ain't easy 3 n half yrs back after two decades away from playing the reason I gave up was because I lost my top front teeth . I only have 3 bottom teeth left n they getting loose lol each time I lose one it sets me back but in time chops adapt
