Back in the 80s, our household had both a 205 GTi 1.6 and a 205 XS, which was almost as fast. I wish I had kept both of them.

I have size 15, very wide feet and had no problems driving the 205's, 104's, 309's, 306's and 106's I have owned or had the pleasure of driving. They all share the same pedal box. The model in the video has a BE-1 gearbox which should have a reasonably light & slick shift so if it's like 'milking a badger' something is worn out or incorrectly set. I do agree though that A well sorted 205GTi, or it's smaller siblings the GT, XS & XT are delightful little hot hatches which still cut the mustard today in terms of pure driving pleasure much akin to a road legal Go-kart.

then it's absolute biased lie to say that you had no problem if I with smaller shoes had....
@glenrea7 жыл бұрын
TheKenjoje depends on the shoes you wear. No good wearing a great big pair of Doctor Martens or other heavy boots. Light plimsolls or training shoes, and use the tip of your foot to push the pedal. There are plenty of other cars with even tighter pedalboxes I have had to adapt my pedal-pushing style.
@TheKenjoje7 жыл бұрын
all heavy boots with big platforms devoid you of any feel, I know, it's even worse with those, especially if that sole is not soft....I drove seat marbella (panda) so I know what it is to drive a car with cramped pedals and yes, the position of the feet is also problematic for tall people....
@CarFilms11 жыл бұрын
Hi Shoaib - yes it reclines up and down like any car seat so I believe it goes straight up. I used to know a disabled guy who drove one in the road going class in hillclimbs, he was in a wheelchair too. Anything else you need to know, just shout.

Hey Paul, basically turning into your number one fan here!... Your videos are not only informative but they are really funny, love the way your really get down to talking brass tacks. I like the jacket joke, -very original motoring journalism. I would love to see a TV program here in the states presented by you and your twin Richard Hammond! I work in the music industry primarily, bringing UK acts to East Coast America. Let me know if you are ever in California as my partner and I would love to do a screen test with you. Keep up the good work! Go Brits!

Thanks for the comments Zach, appreciate them. I'd love to present in America one day - better hurry up and 'crack' the UK first eh! www.paulwoodford.co.uk

If your gear-change on the GTI is not smooth, slick and satisfying it's not as it should be. Mine was superb and was one of the features that helped it to be the most fun cars I've ever owned or driven.

for years i have loved this car, right through out my child hood... next year im thinking of taking my driving test (i'll be 17) and i really want a 205 GTI (or I don't even mind a low spec, they still look the same, just without the GTI badge and the HP), should I or should I not?... I have considered a new 2013 astra (due it having all safety features and such) but I still love the 205... Is it wise or should I go for the safer option
@DonEzioCorleone7 жыл бұрын
dan clements Do yourself a favour and get a XS 205 mate. They have everything a 205 gti has but a 1.4 engine. I've driven one and let me tell you, they are very fun to drive. I'm getting my GTI later this year

I had the 1.6 105hp and the 1.9 120hp and they were great cars... But still not as fast as my Renault 5GTT... Now that was quick!!!!
@triffid689 жыл бұрын
Bill Paxton Yes the 5GT Turbo was slightly quicker to 60 but it wasn't as fun to drive as you didn't have the linear power delivery of a non-turbo. The very earliest 1.6 had 105hp but the bulk of the 205GTI 1.6 cars had 115bhp. The 1.9 GTI had 130bhp apart from models in the final year that had to have a catalytic converter, e.g The 1FM special edition that had 122bhp (less than 1% of the total) Both were universally considered by the motoring press to be the best hot hatches of the era (Car magazine did a huge test using a dozen of the best motoring journalists in 1990, and Autocar to name 2 to mind that I still have)
@TheKenjoje7 жыл бұрын
no fun without a turbo. I like sudden power delivery. that noisy vag tdi pd engines had that shove....better than refined and polished acceleration of common rails....the downside was deadness on high revvs....

I had a 205 1.4 SR petrol and that went like a rocket 1988 4 door black paint it was like something out of the matrix and would drink petrol but never had to put oil in it and I got it when it was 16yrs old it would get up to 70 in a blink of an eye so these GTI's must be lightning
@jachob696 жыл бұрын
the 0-60 on a 205 1.4 SR is 13 seconds mate... i reckon it might have just felt fast at the time being young and it being your first car. but a 205 gti 1.9 does it in around 7.8 i believe
