Excellent tutorial- I'm looking at buying a kit to build a simplified geodesic dome and was wondering how I could build large poly windows into the frame- now I know, thank you!

Excellent video. I'd actually considered a similar process using the tape for plastic film so it'd hold it more securely and allow you to properly stretch the material. By far the best video I've ever seen on polycarbonate. covering.

I would´ve set up a jig to place the polycarbonate square on two sides so I'd had to only cut one edge of it. Great builds!!!
@ornametrics Жыл бұрын
You still need to cut the rebate for silicone anyway.

There's a router bit for countertops that would do that job much cleaner & smoother. You could also experiment with mirrored plastic facing in on the north side to catch & reflect the light for a greenhouse. If it's too bright, there's mirror dulling spray. They use it on movie sets. You can adjust the amount of reflected light. Even white plastic would give you some bounce light. Have you ever tried double paning? One on each side of the frame?

tip" if you can find a good paint that you trust bonding to....you can paint the inside border, whee the tape/sealant goes, it provides a nice uniform look vs seeing the goo/tape through the panes. We used to do this on riveted in polycarb windows on our rally cars.

This is a beautiful geodesic dome. Looks much better than the ones with plastic sheets. But using polycarbonate requires more work and is more expensive too.

Hi. I am terrible at math but i really want to learn to build a 6v hexadome. My goal is to make it frameless. I intend on attempting to do that by using a router to cut a large notch on the outer underside of each solid face and joining the resulting lip with pegs or bolts. I will be trying to cut my faces from solid tree rounds if i can manage that. My question is, how do i calculate the measurements for the faces and the angles where they will meet together at the edges? I am having trouble finding the formula i need for my project and i am ignorant of what resources exist that i can tap into. Can someone please point me in the direction i need to start? Thank you.

How much is the polycarbonate sheet? How big is the sheet? How many triangle do you get out of one sheet ?
@SimpleLifePortugal3 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, so I've left you a question about joining the segments on another video, and how you waterproof the joints. I think I got my answer here :) BUT! I was wondering, have you developed a system to add on top of the joint to protect the sealant? For us in Portugal, the summer heat with cause the joint to crack after 1 season :( or maybe 2 at best... So it would be good to know that as we're considering buying your plans. Thanks in advance

Thought : What if you encapsulate the cell both sides and use spray closed foam in the gap for Energy efficiency and then overspray with white rubber paint or polyurea for sturdiness over the foam?
@conradsenior58435 жыл бұрын
Exactly what I was looking to do.

I would suggest using white silicone, not black. On a sunny day, black silicone will generate temperatures high enough to damage the polycarbonate.

love your videos ! great job :) Do you have an idea of the price of one triangle ? (complete: wood+silicone+polycarbonate+tape..)
@alexfilippidis6 жыл бұрын
guess rather expensive. Polycarbonate 2mm in GR for example is roughly 50 euros for a 1.5m x 2m piece...

Hello Paul! Perhaps I’m missing the information because it’s in another video that I’ve yet to see but how did you acquire the 2mm polycarbonate? Did you order it from a supplier in the exact dimensions or did you buy it in bulk and cut? Thanks for you enthusiasm in this niche, Zach

OK this is for thick square wood posts as triangular independent units. How geodesic domes made on site with thin round metallic rods can be covered with solid polycarbonate?
@clydecrashcup99624 жыл бұрын
The best way would be to make the panels oversize, then overlap them and bolt together. Start at the bottom, so each higher panel would be on top of the one(s) lower than it, the same way you would do with shingles.

@ramtinbadihi53544 жыл бұрын
I have two questions, first is roughly how many man hours did it take to complete this job? And second is for someone who doesn’t have much wood working experience, would this be too much of a challenge to build?
@clydecrashcup99624 жыл бұрын
How many hours would vary a lot, so even if you got an answer it would not help you. The only part that is critical is getting all the angles correct where the wood parts are joined together.
