The registration issue is not just mechanical in nature. Meaning the complete release and need to reinsert the page a second time. There is another source for this registration error that is a lot harder to control. A laser printer fuses the toner to the page using a heat source (ie. a fuser). Historically this has been a halogen lamp inside a Teflon coated fuser roller, or with most HP and possibly most all printers in 2022, a polyimide belt running over a ceramic slab heater. This impact this has on registration is that the first pass drives moisture out of the sheet. So when it goes in the second time, it is ever so slightly not the same size it was the first time. Depending on the makeup of the backing paper, I would venture that the influence of this issue would vary from one makers paper to the next. It would be interesting to see what would happen if you had a third layer that had either nothing on it or some junk graphics in unused zones of the paper. Print that first to run the paper through the system (and fuser). Then print the white, followed by the color. It might be possible to stabilize the paper size with the first "dummy" pass and improve on registration in the subsequent passes

Thanks for reviewing this. I've thought about this for awhile, but it was nice to see someone actually review it. I was a little worried about the registration issues for really small text, but I think if I can just print a solid white layer on a clear film, transfer that, and then paint over that layer with a thin transparent oil paint that has a long working time. I could probably end up getting a nice result over a model with previous textures underneath without altering the underlying layers by just very carefully cleaning up around the edges. Oil paints, small brushes, good lighting, and magnifying goggles are great for that.

Your suggestion about printing the colours & black onto clear decal stock, then the white component/underlay on a second clear sheet using the Ghost toner would certainly seem the best solution to avoid alignment issues. Indeed, several commercial decal manufacturers have taken this approach, and often with separate decals for single coloured elements (e.g. the red spot in the middle of an RAF or pre-1941 US national insignia). I'd hate to think how much money I've wasted on commercial decals that are almost totally unusable due to registration errors. Definitely a great advance on the old ALPS system!

@pauly72183 жыл бұрын
Ok. Where do I begin? It is super tough to get perfect registration, ESPECIALLY at the smaller scales - everything is magnified. I place my paper in the same way every time. I butt it up to the back and left of the tray. it only makes a small bit fo differance. I also make extra copies on different part of the paper, and finally, for the smallest details. I print the white and color separate and then layer the decals - it really isn't that much extra effort and works the best. This also affords you the ability to double up on the white for a bright with an a dark abckground. the Alps will register, but it is more expensive and not as versatile. In the end, I still love it despite this minor short coming - I say minor because it can be worked around.... I hope this helps

As noted, registration is a down fall of the set up but there is hope. First, the small decals are probably always gonna be a problem. Small size and small amount of alignment issue spells trouble. I clip the edge of my white layer by 1/2 points and that usually isn't enough either. I also make sure the paper on both passes is flat and tight to the rear left edge of the paper tray. Finally I have taken to making multi versions of my decals. Several sets with both layers, a few sets with no white layer at all and then a plain white layer. I have found layering my decals is the best option and really not that much extra effort. Someone said they did a hack to the paper tray to improve registration but I can't find info for that and nave never given it much extra thought. While not the best solution, this is still IMHO the best decal printing option around. I hope this info helps

For a couple of years I have made a lot on the normal white or clear paper - but without white lettering. As many others model guys I have been forced to pay for white decals/letters. I just neded to hear from one who actually can prove that this new white toner really works. Keep up the good work. Thanks John

@@pauly7218 Hi Paul. Now I have bought a Canon 621. I have made some test prints, and wowo - it can print very detailed. Much better than my Lexmark. This morning my white toner arrived so now I am testing the best I can. One thing seem to be a major issue. First run with white - OK no problem. Second run with black and image in collors - i have problems with white backside matching colored front. I have made some mecanical ajustments to make sure that the decal paper lies stable in the tray. Have you experienced this problem. Best regards John

Hi, I've been eyeing up the Ghost White toner cartridge for my HP Laser Jet 200 MFP printer in order to print decals for my Warhammer miniatures. What is the advantage of using the Ghost White toner cartridge method instead of just printing on a white laser decal paper ? The Alps printer solution with decal paper from say microscale as good as it is, it just too expensive.

Massive difference as printing on a white sheet means super detailed cutting around the artwork. Trust me, this is way better!

Hi Paul: your video is very important . I have Color Laser jet Pro M452dn Can I use Ghost white toner ink on this printer? Thank you for your time in answering my question.

Hi Paul, I just saw you video and happen to have a Laser Jet Pro M452dn on my desk. My question is, can you just buy the Ghost white toner and use the OEM CMYK for printing? Doing so will save about $400 and make the transition much easier. Thanks in advance!

If your printer is one Ghost supports (www.ghost-white-toner.com/?gclid=CjwKCAiA1eKBBhBZEiwAX3gqlwmxTC3GMzoH5UQVCVQ2iJT8EAXJWNMh-mjG7VWNJtB4vvkeDTcN-hoC_T0QAvD_BwE) all you need is the white toner cartridge. Boom - Done!

Sir, Can I use white toner cartridge in hp laserjet pro M154nw for t-shirt printing? If yes how to setup? Thanks
@pauly72184 жыл бұрын
The cartridges are made for certain printers. They are filled with white toner, but made to trick the printers into thinking it is the black cartridge. Your printer isn't on their list, so no. Here is there web site for additional info.... www.ghost-white-toner.com

Why did you have to print with white toner first?
@pauly72184 жыл бұрын
Toner despite all appearances is not fully opaque. This means decals on a colored background will cause the decals to change. The white base layer prevents this... Thanks for the great question!

Can this printer be used for printing on ceramic mugs or hard surfaces?
@pauly72184 жыл бұрын
YES!!!! Of course you can use water slide decals, BUT, the Ghost toner people also make sublimation toner, which is the perfect, permanent, and washable way to logo things like mugs - Anything in fact that can be sublimated - you would need a mug press, but they are a dime a dozen... I'll probably do that myself when money allows....
@rogervillafana33384 жыл бұрын
@@pauly7218 Thank you very much for your timely response. Very informative. Therefore I assume printing the image using the sublimation cartridges would last longer than the other cartridges?

Great video! Really a lot to consider when trying to get that almost perfect decal. Do you have to have that ghostink or is there any cheap alternatives ?
@pauly72183 жыл бұрын
YES! The Ghost toner is vital here and while a shock to the wallet up front, it goes a hell of a long way! You could make enough selling decals to easily pay for the next cartridge. Without it, it is just bad decals coming form a laser printer!

Paul, I see that the Ghost Cartridge is more than the other 4 cartridges combined. That makes it pretty expensive to play around with doesn't it? I'm sure you don't have an answer for why the white is so expensive, but I just have to wonder. Nice job though. I'll be anxious to see some decals made from your new printer. Thanks

I is a hefty price, but in comparison to say Alps cartridges, or outsourcing it isn't so bad on a per decal price basis...

Can you name an expensive printer that can print all colors, including white on a single pass?
@pauly72183 жыл бұрын
No such animal. You can go with an Alps, but they are expensive, not made anymore and difficult to work with. This is your best option honestly, and you just need to figure out a workaround for registration that works for you... I still love this set up...

Hi, I looked for this video because I want to learn how to print names in white and apply to my models, but I didn't understand why you print in white then you cover it with black, isn't it better to avoid white and print in black directly without printed in white? You just cover the white , 🤔please explain to me . I just want to print in white . But is kind of confusing. Thanks
@pauly7218 Жыл бұрын
I don't generally print white over black. If I am printing a full underlay, and the color layer has some black in it, so be it. If you just want white, then just print white!
@patrickcurtis50029 ай бұрын
I had the worst experience with Ghost White .. I have 2 high end HP office laser printers .. $1000 price range .. and every time you turn on the printer it knows you're not using HP toner. You have to take the cartridge out, reset the printer, reinsert the cartridge and start printing. It got to the point where it did not recognize the cartridge period. Total waste of money.
@pauly72189 ай бұрын
This is a result of the printer manufacturer implanting software and codes to prevent third party toner use. You might find a sticker with a code on an old black toner you can put on the white, and that will possibly work, or you can try to downgrade the printers software. Sorry...
