I played this for a close friend who had his worst days fighting in Bosnia. Years of anguish and pain that he kept well hidden finally surfaced in an audible sob and continued as he replayed the song several times. I will forever be so grateful that this beautiful and unusual collaboration happened. Mother Mary guided this pair of amazingly gifted musicians and also held my friend as he grieved the horror of war.

In this benefit concert for Bosnia in 1996, Eric Clapton performed a song he wrote for the Blessed Mother along with the renowned Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotti and a terrific Gospel choir. The words of the song are a real prayer for Clapton. In his memoir, Clapton: The Autobiography, the musician writes about a rock-bottom moment he had in rehab in 1987: “I was in complete despair,” wrote Clapton. “In the privacy of my room, I begged for help. I had no notion who I thought I was talking to, I just knew that I had come to the end of my tether . . . and, getting down on my knees, I surrendered. Within a few days I realized that . . . I had found a place to turn to, a place I’d always known was there but never really wanted, or needed, to believe in. From that day until this, I have never failed to pray in the morning, on my knees, asking for help, and at night, to express gratitude for my life and, most of all, for my sobriety.”

He didn't write this song for the "blessed mother"(she don't exist btw) he wrote this song in 1986 for Richard Manual who was a good friend of Eric's who died young. The holy mother he speaks of wasn't his mother or the blessed mother it was just an ideal of someone who could help him someone he could sing to, he explicitly stated before many times that it has nothing to do with Holy Mary or the blessed mother. Why do ppl only read what they want to see and ignore the truth when it comes to religion. I mean you read the book and you still want to believe it's a religious or holy song. Also this song was written over a year before he went into rehab in 87. He wrote this song in March 86 just after Richard had passed. It was 100% a tribute to Richard Manual and he 100% wasn't singing to the blessed mother.

i met Pavarotti in Pittsburgh, when he was opening the Pittsburgh Opera season one year in the late 80's. he was an unbelievable presence in a huge, empty room. he could not have been more gracious or kind. i took one quick spin around the dance floor with him before the evening's guests entered the room...it is a memory i will forever cherish!
