Being sickly and working in the house kept Pavel alive as long as he was. When the Jews were first brought into camps, the sick, frail, pregnant, girls, kids, etc. were killed immediately. Only those who could work and be useful to the Nazis were kept alive.

I believe the reason Pavel was attacked was because the the Lieutenant was being interrogated and he wanted out of that situation immediately. Perhaps he would have been attacked anyway, but I think that Lieutenant painted himself into a corner lying about his father being opposed to The Nazi Party ideals. He needed to be out of that room, and attacking Pavel gave him just what he wanted....OUT! I think his shaking was not because he was old, but because the lack of food and water was making him sick, off-balanced, and weak. His labored breathing, slow walking, and shaking was because of the treatment of Jews in the camp! I cried during this scene and through most of the movie! Those people went through hell for no real reason at all!
