Have you ever tried or considered using geogrid under the pavers, and allowing it to extend out past the edge so that it could be embedded in the concrete restraint? This way it might help strengthen the concrete and also anchor it even better against the paver edge.

I pulled off my own patio by binge watching your videos. I cannot thank you enough. Now I need to do brick edging around my house for a landscape bed. This isn’t a walkway but just a row of Holland paver bricks with grass on one side and rock on the other side. How do you secure the bricks in a case like this? Concrete? Or just dirt. Any suggestions would be amazing! God bless brother!

That’s awesome man, I always appreciate the feedback! I hope you are enjoying your patio! As for the edging, I would probably dig a trench that is 2 inches deeper than where you want the pavers to be, fill it with concrete and set the pavers in concrete. That will make it easy to level them and also keep them secure for a long time ✌🏻

Hello, Thank you for your video! I'm doing my own patio and was looking at the plastic edging vs concrete. A couple questions: 1) Can I do concrete edging if my paver is only 2" thick? ***If so, does it go all the way to the top? ***How thick should I make the edging? 2) It looks as though you press it to the apex-side of the paver, how do you cover that and have a clean edge so it doesn't show when finished? I appreciate your input and hope you have a happy new year!
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, glad the video was helpful! And yes, I would recommend using concrete even with slightly thinner pavers. You just need to dig a small trench along the edge about 1-2 inches below the pavers but at an angle so you do not undermine the pavers. Then when you install the concrete, trowel it at an angle (45 degrees) from the bottom of the trench to just below the top of the paver. Then whether you use top soil, mulch or stone, you just backfill right over the concrete to hide it. ✌

I have a concrete sidewalk I have been thinking about putting pavers on. I thought about using concrete sand on top of the concrete sidewalk for the base of the pavers. In doing so I wouldn't have the rock base you referred to for building the concrete edging on. Would putting the crushed rock on the outside perimeters of the pavers be sufficient for layering the concrete edging on?

Could you add a 3/8 line of rebar to the concrete edge for more stability ? Like take 1ft piecesvof rebar, and drive them into the ground, then connect a single line of rebar connecting all the 1 footers? Your thoughts on that....
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper Жыл бұрын
You definitely can use rebar, it does nothing but help! I just don't feel that it is necessary, especially driving the strips into the ground, that just won't help much really. If anything it may hurt it... If they shift due to ground movement, it could pop the concrete of the edge of the pavers. Now just laying the rebar horizontally, that definitely helps. It makes all the concrete act as one piece. But again, helpful for sure, just not necessary in my opinion. ✌

great information, as usual! I'd love to see a side-by-side comparison of plastic and concrete edging one year later. I'm guessing that with plastic edging the grass grows beside the pavers a bit better?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The grass does grow better up against the edge with plastic edging. However, it moves and shifts far more than concrete in my opinion. I see plastic edging failures everywhere I go..... So I always explain that to my customers, that to secure the pavers sufficiently, we use concrete. We install it in a way that will secure the pavers tight with allowing the best chance of grass growing next to it. But I tell them that there is always a chance the grass will not grow within the first few inches. If they don't like that, there is always the option to put a stone apron, small mulch bed with plants, etc.. But the strength of the edging is more important to me than the 3-4 inch gap of grass not growing along the pavers. ✌

Did you do the final set with the compactor prior to adding the edge restraint or does that come when adding the joint sand? If it comes when doing the sand does the compactor effect the edging or are there technics you use when compacting near the borders?
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 жыл бұрын
We do our final compact of the pavers after the 1st sweep through of the polymeric sand. Then we sweep through 1 more time to fill in what settled. The best way to do the concrete is to do it when you are polymeric sanding so that the concrete is still wet when you compact the pavers so that you don’t break the bond. With that being said, there are plenty of times where you just have to concrete before poly. At that point, you just be a little easier around the edges when compacting. Even if the bond breaks, the concrete will still hold the pavers back better than plastic edging. ✌🏻

@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 жыл бұрын
You either do the poly and concrete simultaneously, or do it a day or more after it is hardened. The best way is to do the poly just after you set the concrete. But if that’s not possible, just let it harden up and then poly. Just go a little easier around the edges with your tamper… The reinforced concrete is definitely better, but not necessary. For me, the cost far outweighs the worth. Way to expensive…. If done right, regular concrete will hold just fine✌🏻

It depends on where the steps lay out. If it is right on the edge of the patio, you can do it before or after. In situations like this job, we had to install all of our steps first to establish the heights of the walkways / landings. I would recommend installing the steps before pavers 9 times out of 10, but there is sometimes where installing the pavers before the steps is necessary.... so use your best judgment for your project ✌

@TheChristianHardscaper

You can use concrete with the panels but you would need to cut the panels right along the edge of the pavers so the concrete can go past the panels and into the base. That will lock everything in. But with the panels, you can screw or nail edging right into it which will hold pretty well. You would want to do the concrete 1st and let it set before poly sand. Good luck! ✌

Thanks for the feedback! Sounds like you have a good project on your hands. As far as the concrete edging, if you are ok with spending the extra money, the fiber mix / reinforced concrete will hold better than regular concrete. With that being said, I completely stand by regular concrete. If done right, it will last a very long time. I personally will not spend that much money on a small bag of concrete unless they put gold flakes in it that I can take out... 😂 Just like every other industry, they have very high cost "solutions" that they push you to buy. Just like plastic edging and spikes. Somethings are not worth the money, and I refuse to pay outrageous prices for such basic materials. I have used "extreme-edge" which is a fiber reinforced concrete before on a small patio, costed me 10x what it would cost for regular concrete.... That's why they want you to use it. screw that....

Totally agree brother, Most are nervous that the concrete will crack or shift but I just have not dealt with that issue. The edging with spikes seem to always be visible and lifted, or sunken and spread open with the border pavers sunken as well. At least with cracked concrete, it still holds the pavers in place good. Once plastic edging looses even a little pressure up against the pavers, it is fail city from there on out... ✌

I didnt see anything about the concrete edging and tamping. One part i see where you tamp a big patio by hand but that is hard to believe you do that for all of them. My main question is do you use a compactor to seat all your blocks into the stone AFTER you concrete your edge. Didnt know if it had to be the same day or would concrete brake off that day. I woukd think you always needs a plate compctor to make sure there is no movement in long run. I did 6” of 57 and 1-1 1/2 inch of #8 and there is a little play in the stones so i woukd think you really need a pkate compactor to properly seat them in. I coukdnt find any info of this in your videos
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 жыл бұрын
I do hand tamp for poly sand pretty often but also use plate compactors / vibratory roller compactors here and there. All those methods however, I stay away from the border pavers because I concrete before poly and I don't want to break the bond. With that being said, when we install the border pavers, we add chip stone and set them slightly lower than the main pavers and lay them with a 1/8 slope so that when we compact the pavers during poly, we can stay away from the border while not worrying that they will be higher than the main pavers. It also allows you to prevent the concrete from separating from the border. If you compact before the edge restraint and go over them, they will all shift way to much and you will end up having to fix the entire border....✌

Concrete edging does not turn under the paver edge, therefore it is not integral. It will move separately and independently to the pavers. Therefore over time the pavers and concrete edge will separate and shift apart. .. The best edging is plastic and has a lip that slides under the sand bedding and on top of the compacted 21A compacted base nailed in with spikes. That way the edging is tied in with the paving and will move together keeping it held tight together. ... Been doing this since before you were born, and done it every way imaginable. Except I will say I never used that #57.
@TheChristianHardscaper
@TheChristianHardscaper 2 жыл бұрын
I know exactly what type of edging you are talking about. While it is better than your typical plastic edge restraint, I still don't agree that it is better than concrete. And like I mentioned in this video, You cant use regular steel spikes in open grade base, they will not hold. To go even further, I will never use dense grade and sand as my paver base again. This open grade base technique is far superior in my opinion, and I used the traditional dense grade / sand and plastic edging for years before I switched. This Open grade base technique is just better in so many ways. The concrete does not separate from the pavers like you are saying it does with this technique. The reason it does when you use the dense grade / sand method is because both of those materials hold onto water like a sponge, cause movement, shifting and heaving throughout the regular season and even more throughout the winter. With the clean stone under the pavers, there is significantly less water in your base material, preventing the pavers from moving. Final thought, even with the plastic edging with a lip, there is no material in this world that migrates and shifts more than sand does, there is no plastic edging out there that can prevent the bedding sand from migrating under / through it. You may have been doing this for a very long time, that does not change the fact that this is a better technique. I have a little over 4 years now using this technique on more than 75 installs and no call backs or repairs yet, I will never go back to the old traditional method of laying pavers like the majority still are......✌

@@TheChristianHardscaper Ok, you may be right about using that #57 stone with that smaller clean stone bedding will drain everything better, and that reduces overall movement by keeping it generally drier, but unless the base goes down to the frost line, which I seriously doubt that it does and shouldn't, then there will still be movement. 4 years so far, means everything you've done that way is still 'new'. After 10 years, then I would be completely sold on it.. I wish you good luck on your experiment. Nothing better than proving the experts wrong.😉

@@TheChristianHardscaper ......Also, that PaveEdge restraint does not sit on top of the bedding sand. You scrape the bedding sand away and spike/nail the edging directly onto the compacted 21A base. After you slide the lip beneath the paver edge AND bedding sand. Then plate compact the pavers down into the bedding sand. It is Very Strong.. Any sand bedding migration is negligible. It can't go anywhere.

This method is being used by a lot more contractors than you think. It certainly is not an experiment, most paver manufacturers here in new england are recommending open grade base more and more because of all the advantages. Water drains better, quicker prep time and you can get poured on overnight and the job site will be fine to work on in the morning. We will just have to agree to disagree man.✌

Amateur stuff ! The concrete WILL certainly break and crack , and also it looks terrible because the edge is NOT uniform... take it from a project manager who will never approve such installation... this is good only for those who simply DONT Know how to properly install edging properly!!!

Project managers are suckers for sales pitches. That’s why you think plastic / metal edging is better. Those companies make a lot of money based on people like you falling for their sales strategies. My methods come from experience, have you ever actually built a project like this or have you always just showed up, walked around and made silly speculations on other peoples work? My guess is you have not ever built a project like this…

@@TheChristianHardscaper My friend ;1) You spoke too soon ; I am a civil Engineer by Profession moving to project Management in the last 15 years ; currently working for the biggest construction company down under - I am working in the commercial arm of the company - High rise buildings... Also when I was studying I worked every summer as a brickie's labourer so rest assured I understand the trades very well indeed, and can lay a few bricks and pavers ...enough said 2) I never encouraged the use of any plastic edging - This is your deduction ... what I said was that concrete edging without any metal reinforcement will crack with time (which is true) and it will look quite ugly... if you understood otherwise, not my fault.. For your information the best , and the ONLY method that will stand the test of time is the installation of edge pavers laid properly with the appropriate substrate ... (if you want to know what is the best substrate I can gladly tell you if you ask me !!!) Have a lovely week and good luck with your jobs !!!

@@harryfandakis2339 I think you need to re look at your initial comment because that is not what you said at all. Don't expect people to respond politely when you approach them with hostility. That is a silly expectation. I give no respect when none is given to me, regardless of your "credentials". I have no need for your opinion on my projects, you can keep them for the company that is paying you for them. Have a nice week as well ✌
