Not bad for starting out. Its always a learning process. I am still learning 20 years later. A few suggestions for driveways... Start your screed on top of a shim board on top of the concrete, 3/4 inch high. We use concrete grade stakes to slide off. Allow 1/4 inch for each inch of asphalt. So if you want 2" compacted, pave at 2 1/2 or 2 5/8. You will get great edges by laying 2x4's (layed flat) down your edges, Sprayed with fuel. Simply flip them up to a 45 when the paver passes each board and kick in your edge a few times down the board before moving them up the stringline or paint marks. Invest in a good 3 or 400 lb hand roller. We have a guy in asphalt shoes following the paver with a hand roller which seals the asphalt tight immediately. You can bring the roller up on a little later. When you have a turn around that close to the start... pull it out and leave 6 or 8 inches of asphalt on the very end, hand roll the entire piece and hand tamp the edges. When you pull by the pad 10 minutes later, catch the excess with your side gate and pull it in. It will eliminate the seam and speed your up saving you some labor $. Left side of your screed had asphalt on it or was cold... if the ends of your screed are plugged or the back vents are plugged the heat will favor one side. Heating the screed up prior, with some oil and and scraping it clean will give you a flawless mat. Watch a ton or other peoples videos and stop a job if you see one. People come up with the neatest stuff if you take the time to watch. Delete the first 8 or 10 seconds of your video. First impressions are tough to alter. Good luck.

How About That! I've been paving now for about 10 yrs and I like your idea about pinching the seam immediately with a guy on asphalt shoes. i think we will have to try that.

Great comment nothing wrong with wanting to help someone out. Unfortunately in this case the guy knows exactly what he's capable of and is clearly ripping off who ever they are paving this for. There's not one legitimate paving company that paves 1" of top coat over gravel for a finished job on purpose. This is a scan operation and it's said to see people ripping customers off and giving the rest of us bad reps in the business

I will say this I was born into the asphalt construction business Literally. i was out on jobs on summer breaks at 7 years old. I’m 23 now and started physically working at 12 years old. So with that being said as long as they have 2 and a half to 3 inches installed it’s a good job. The edges might not be the straightest but I’ve seen plenty of company’s with big fancy equipment and not know how to run it. And I seen a comment on here about there being no tack coat.....you don’t tack coat gravel. only on asphalt overlays. I personally prefer for my guys to keep there shirts on while working, but hey every company is different.

Tell your roller man to follow the same line off as he did on even more so when he has a concrete pad to pull back on also throw some tarps on the concrete pad also step the joint in and bump the joint with the rake multiple times to create compaction at the joint to the concrete pad then get some type of compaction across it the same way it runs b4 the roller gets on also sense it is a older paver screed might not adjust to take out that course ness in the Matt so sand it all and get the roller on as soon as possible dont compact the edge tell the roller runs down then have a tamper run down it to avoid the edge from cracking also when ever you go to pull one sections out and you can move fast enough leave a head of material at that pull keeps the joint hotter longer you can pull it further out then catch it with your extension other then that lay it think and you will be on the right track to step up your game
