I always shield the GPS/magnetometer with some self adhesive aluminum foil to protect it from RF noise. And it works very well. Even above the caddx tarsier which usually blocks the GPS signal totally. 👍 On my betaflight builds I simply put the single bn180 GPS/ without magnetometer on the rear arm, and it works pretty well.👍

would it helps to 1) add aluminum foil as a shield between the gps and the battery cables (or carbon)? 2) use shielded connection cable in which you attach the shield to the ground pin on the FC (and leave the cable shield floating on the gps side to avoid ground loop)?

Several of my quads have the GPS on the top of the HD (GoPro) Camera mount, never had a problem, always get at least 12-14 satellites. I was getting 21 the other day way out in the middle of nowhere. The main thing to remember is to twist the GPS wires then wrap or shield them. I just use shrink tube, using the heat also molds it to the contour shape of my quad and camera mount, keeps it tidy. I also mount on my strap with one but that tends to wear the wires out. I do love the rear GPS mounts the best for sure.

That's correct. I have GPS in the back, but close to the battery leads, and it is really really hard to obtain lock. So far, had best results putting it on a rear arm(fron of the quad is occupied by noisy HD camera and even noiser RX antena mounted verticaly on camera mount, rear of the quad is occupied by vtx antenna), getting gps lock within 30 seconds after pluging in the battery. Sure, prop can hit it, but how often it does happen in case of long range rig? And if so you have much bigger problem than possibly destroyed 10usd gps module.

Very informative! But I always wondered one thing: with magnetometer disabled in a FW, can we install the GPS receiver as close to the motor as we like, or could extreme proximity cause RF disruption? The motor pod of Bixler style pushers would be a convenient location if we could safely use it.
@treesifpv38484 жыл бұрын
I have my BN-180 mounted 5mm from a motor on an arm. 20+ sats and much quicker to lock than when it was central. It is close enough to the motor to avoid prop strikes.
@Videolinquency4 жыл бұрын
@@treesifpv3848 Interesting! But you acquire those sats before you even arm, right? Can you tell from your OSD whether you keep that lock while the motors run?
@treesifpv38484 жыл бұрын
@@Videolinquency I hadn't thought of that - but yes, there would be no power to motors before arming. It does hold lock after arming. So it seems spacing from other electronics helps, and motors don't seem to be a problem. No magnetometer though, if I had one then Pawel's method at the back would be best. I had a bracket previously, but it was more exposed in crashes so I tried the arm. It is wrapped in insulation tape and wires routed out of the way of prop strike zone.
@Videolinquency4 жыл бұрын
@@treesifpv3848 Thank you. That means I won't have to keep the GPS receivers as far from the motors as I have done before. But I still think we should leave an inch or two if we can - it would surprise me if a running motor did not emit at least some radio noise - though I gather from your reply that it can't be a lot. Come to think of it, brushed motors certainly did when I made my first FPV flights in the naughties. They tended to ruin the video if they got too hot.
@Willy_Tepes9 ай бұрын
If I cannot mount a GPS closer than 5 cm to the motor, and not anywhere near the camera or VTX, then I have no place to mount it. This makes small drones with GPS impossible. My drone is about half the size of yours.

I came to the same conclusion. Most of my GPS modules are mounted on a TPU printed part on the rear/backside. At least for the GPS signal, RX or VTX antennas seem to be no issue if there is a distance of 1-2 cm to the module. I also found that steel screws often interfere with the compass. Very bad advice. I checked it on myself. This positioning of the gps+magnetrometr at the back creates a lot of air resistance. Stick your palm out the window of the car driving at 100 km / h and you will understand. The problem manifests itself in pitch jerking at speed. For a long time I could not understand how to cope with the jerking problem, although the pids were calibrated to ideal using a pidanalizer. But I calibrated the pids at low speeds, so the "sail" in the form of a gps module did not make itself felt. Moved the module so that resistance was not created and now everything is fine)
