Part 2 is live! Check it out here! • Pawn Shop Rescue Strat...
I came across another deal I could not pass up at my local pawn shop this week. After some serious consideration, I decided to take a chance and got myself a genuine made in Mexico Stratocaster for less than half of what it would sell for on Reverb.com! The catch is, this guy is in very rough shape. This is part one of a new series for this guitar, and in this video we find out what all is wrong with it by tearing it down and looking it over. Do you think I can fix it? I think it’s possible!
Be sure to subscribe so you can catch each episode of this new series as they drop!

I used an iron and a towel. It worked perfectly. It was a Squier Strat PG. I protected it with the towel. I ironed one side, flip and repeat. 2 or 3 times fixed it.

My pickguard has the same bump between the middle and neck pickups because I've been stashing my picks there since '97 lol

I had never thought to put a pick there lol. I’ve always used a pocket or my mouth

As someone who purchases a lot of pawn shop guitars this is common condition. Most guitar's are pawned because something's wrong not because they needed money. As a pawn shop won't give you any substantial amount for any guitar.

Unfortunately it is common to see them like this. I've rescued many guitars from pawnshops that still had a lot of life left in them and gotten them back into good working condition. I have only ever picked up one that was nearly perfect. I just had to replace a couple knobs and it was good to go. That was an Ibanez Jet King 30. Love that guitar.

Would have been interesting to hear what you paid for it from the pawn shop, just so we could see if you made out okay at the end.

Thanks for chiming in, and sorry for the delay in my reply. I'm not sure why I didn't add that in. The pawn shop had it on the wall at $360. I got them down to $250 including tax. With the Fender parts I bought for it and strings, I'm in $300. Not terrible for a fixer upper MIM thats only two years old I think.

You can fix the pickguard, heat it up and clamp between two flat surfaces pretty easy to do.

Thanks for the tip! Not sure why I didn’t think of doing that. Maybe I’ll try that in the future.

Pretty common, usually due to someone keeping a pick in that spot

I can see that for the separation in the photo, but the distortion over the pickups definitely was not from a pick in the pick guard. I hadn’t thought about the pick causing that warp though, so thank you for the thought! I appreciate you chiming in

treating the guitar better helps avoiding these things. Had too much heat in onde spot.

Very true! Always keep your guitars indoors when possible and don’t leave them in your car during the summer!

I’m not sure why I didn’t think to heat it up and flatten it back out. Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve already replaced the guard but maybe I’ll do a video with the old guard and flattening it out
