Maybe her grandpa got lucky and raided a rich dudes home in WW2 Japan. Thats how most japanese antiques wound up here. This really is a unique find tho, most ww2 bring backs are crappy military blades that were pumped out to be last resort sidearms, very rare for a high level fuedal era blade, likely comissioned privatly by a noble family. Something tells me allot of men died in the process of that sword sitting in some suburban nevada home.

The Hizen Yukihiro that made this sword is listed on Wazamono which shows the grade of authoritative cutting ability. The Wazamono is the lowest of the four classes, but it is better than a general sword. By the way, the most excellent grade is Saijo Owazamono, and Kotetsu, a swordsmith, is famous as a swordsmith who corresponds to the highest grade. The valuable sword owned by the feudal lord was not on the Wazamono list because it was not tested for cutting ability. For example, Masamune and Go Yoshihiro are not on the list.

He would not even have understood the concept. He may not even have know where he got is steel from unless he made it himself. A lot of the better swords were made from imported steel, it would likely have come into Japan of Portuguese or Spanish ships and come from India, the same place the steal for Damascus swords came from. It is possible that was made entirely in Japan but that time is after the Spanish began to trade there.

TBH not all of the "wartime Japanese swords" are antiquity swords. So if you are an American, the chance of you getting an actual antique sword is not zero, but don't get your hopes too high that every single one of them are gonna sell at this price. A lot of them were mass produced from industrial steel, they were just made in the shape of antique swords, to suit the need of the expanding military of that time.

I love that most of the older swords taken in are properly stored in a shirasaya. They are used for lomg term storage as opposed to the traditional tsuki(handle) and saya(scabbard). They also remove the Tsuba (handgaurd). The shirasaya casing is made to control the humidity since the swords are subject to rust. In a shirasaya the sword will still need maintenance but much less maintenance as opposed to a sword stored in a lacquered saya. :) love how they were cared for before they ended up here

Interesting enough the sword was missing the habaki, the gold piece that sits just above the Tsuba, they help seal the blade in the saya

This sword was most likely taken from some family dojo or shrine judging from the design, and missing habaki. swords worn to battle have lacquered saya, wrapped with a kashira at the end. Swords often have a second one of the same design made by the blacksmith which is donated to the client or a shrine.

The scripture that was shown in the video said it was tested by the executioner by the way of cutting through 2 stacked human bodies on the date of July 21, 1660 (Japanese calendar, probably in August, not July). So it’s as real as it gets, and typically passed down from father to son. I don’t think it would appear randomly in some American’s home. My guess is that her grandpa must have saved someone important back in WWII for him to give this to grandpa.
