The biggest thing with the show is that it gives people an unrealistic expectation of going to a pawn shop. On the show, if somebody comes in with something that is worth $2000 the pawn shop will probably end up giving them upwards of $1500-1800 for the item - which to the viewer seems relatively fair that they are getting close to what the item is worth and don't have to go through the hassle of selling it and can get their money right now instead of maybe a week, month or longer if they went and sold it online or placed a classified ad. But the reality is: if your item is worth $2000 they will probably only end up giving you $200-300 for it. Thats not the pawn shop trying to cheat the sellers or rip them off: their job is to basically flip stuff as fast as possible and if they pay $200 for something worth $2000 they'll probably put a $500 price tag on it so somebody will come in, see it at $1500 cheaper than its full retail price and be willing to buy it ASAP because if they leave and come back the next day it might be gone.

@65FASTBACKMAN-dx9ge9 ай бұрын
I mean... did anyone actually ever think that this show was real? The first thing that stood out to me was a "seller" bringing something in that they wanted say $1k for, to then have the crew call in "their buddy who is an expert" about whatever the item is. Which is immediately a conflict of interest for the "seller" considering it's the "buddy" of the staff member, but let's continue on and have the "buddy expert" show up. They say the item is actually only worth $100, of which the crew offers the "seller" $20 for the item. And then the "seller" actually goes along with it for some reason when they went into the shop wanting $1k for the item. I won't watch the show, because it's so incredibly scripted and fake that it's ridiculous to think anyone would actually ever think that it's real. There are times that it's been on the tv at work and an item will supposedly be worth "$10k" of which they will offer the "seller" $1,500 for it and the seller will take it. Because they claim it'll be a difficult sell or they might only get $7,500 for it. Which is absurd, and if the "seller" actually had any common sense at all, they'd sell the item on their own instead and make way more money.

Well of course it's fake. Real pawn shops pretty much deal exclusively in videogame consoles and cheap jewelry. Even then, they pay literally cents on the dollar for said items. I still remember they only offered me a dollar for a PS3 controller, back when PS3 was still the hot console. Total ripoff shops are what they are.

I mean it's definitely partially scripted, particularly a lot of the inbetween segments and the way the sellers seemingly wander in casually off the street, but I would be willing to bet that the actual items and bargaining is more or less real. I mean they literally do run a pawn shop, but their ability to deal in such expensive items and large amounts of cash is likely due to the backing of the TV production and their huge personal earnings. The shop itself may have gotten to the point where it's more of a tourist destination now but it didn't just start like that from day one. It's not like they were world famous when they filmed season one, and when you compare the later seasons it's still basically the same show, just with more scripted segments taking place outside the shop. I think people are missing the point of the show. I couldn't really care less about the personalities and the drama... the show is interesting because it focuses on historical and culturally significant items, and provides some interesting facts and the evaluation from an expert. It's essentially just Antiques Roadshow except they cherry pick more universally interesting items to be on the show.
@thedave1602Ай бұрын
It's kinda not a surprise. The intention could've been to film everything there and possibly was, but overtime, you know you're going to have people who just want to be on TV, disrupting the operation of the store. Add to that, you know the show would naturally do metrics about what makes the show more interesting, and try to capitalize on those aspects of the show, which could be difficult to record when someone who just wants to be on TV starts making a scene.

To me it’s fake because first why would you bring anything, especially that is perceived significant value to a lowballing pawn shop? Two, if you had something that is old or antique wouldn’t you do much research to maximize your potential sale price? And finally the items, old guns, swords, guitars, artifacts.. there are specialized dealers who buy that all day long and will pay a premium in many cases. To me it’s scripted and fake.. but I’ll still watch it and that’s only my opinion.
