Rick claimed the guy wouldn't budge on his price, but he did. He went from $100,000 asking price all the way down to $30,000. Rick was the one that wouldn't budge once he hit 25K. I think this one was Rick's loss. An original Houdini straight jacket would be like a holy grail to a Houdini collector. To the right collector or museum, I think it could be worth alot more than that 34 to 42 K estimate. I was amazed that Rick let this one walk out of his shop.

RJ Walker Rick knew it too but he’s not collecting this stuff, he’s selling it for a profit.
@john-paulsilke8937 жыл бұрын
RJ Walker it was a borderline decision and they both made the right decision. We now know it sold for $47,000 but you don’t run a business with time machines. I’d say Rick was about 45% right and the seller was 55% in the right. In the end Rick screwed up but also didn’t lose either. He’ll keep making money with chopped up gold sold at 5pts under market to him and reselling when the market swings and gives him another point or two.

Funny thing is supposedly they actually used to have this, or what they thought was it anyway. But the crusaders took it into battle and lost, then the Muslims took it; it’s never been seen since.

Did a little research and this jacket sold for $46,980 in Nov 2011 at a Christie’s auction. Looks like Rick lost out.
@markpeterson76016 жыл бұрын
Nah. not really Jim. What the article doesn't mention is how big of a cut Christie's auction takes. They are known for taking out HUGE cuts. sometimes as high as 30%. So after all is said and done, the guy probably ended up pocketing around the same money that Rick offered him. Had he just took the money and went about his day, he also would've saved himself all the headache of dealing with a live auction.

Rick: “How much are one of theses worth?” Like there’s hundreds of theses straight jackets (the thing that made Houdini famous) out there. Blows my mind... that’s a one of a kind piece.

Rick complains the guy wouldn't budge. Rick went from 15 - 25. The guy went from 40-30. He budged as much as Rick budged.

Can’t believe this guy wouldn’t budge on his price? He came down from 100 and rick wouldn’t even go up another 5 to 30!
@Bandit-Darville7 жыл бұрын
That's what you get for low balling a customer and not budging. He could've made himself 10 large ones on this but let it fly because of his stubbornness. This piece should go for 50K with the right buyer.

Perhaps even more in an auction house. There are people today who would spend lots of money to buy a famous item.
@markpeterson76016 жыл бұрын
Nah. The guy actually put the straight jacket on Ebay twice after this show. He listed it for around $129k. Nobody was even remotely interested in that price range. He then ended up listing it an a high end auction (Christy's) and it sold for $47k.. After all the auction fees, processing fees, listing fees, and Christy taking a cut.. he probably got about the same amount of money that Rick offered him.
@markpeterson76016 жыл бұрын
M - he did try selling it on Ebay. Twice actually. nobody bought. He then tried selling it at a high end physical auction. It sold for $47k. After all the fees and charges. He probably got the same (if not less) amount of money that Rick offered him.
