It's a general tip. It used to be a bulletproof tell. But now even the really good fakes have got that area covered, as well as many other details. You need to examine everything very closely and be familiar with the authentic ones. Even then, you really need to open it up and examine the movement to know for sure. Maybe not 5-6 years ago when you wrote this, but today, everything outside is virtually identical, but they haven't quite gotten to the level of fooling people with the cloned movements. That's the one area that is immediately apparent. And that too will become difficult in the near future.

Looking at the fakes now, it's a lot more impressive than the one shown here. Some are only discernable if you take the case back off and look at the movement. The fakes normally have an incorrect regulator on the balance compared to proper movements. Amazing the difference 12 years of perfecting fakes will do to the market.

It was just like the movies with the scam guys selling watches. This guy had a brief case with watches & "gold" rings & stuff. I asked him if the Rolex was real & he smiled & said "of course" I then laughed & said "It's a genuine fake Rolex." He laughed & admitted it was fake. We both joked around & I ribbed him for a few about selling fake stuff. He was surprisingly honest about where he got the stuff. He bought it from a guy that imported "boxes & boxes" of fake stuff from China. He said he made money by selling the watches & jewelry during the day & passing out fliers for bars & selling fake VIP passes in the evenings. He actually warned me not to buy a VIP pass. Anyways, we talked for about 3/4 an hour & he let me in on his life story & how he got got by. I figured that was worth a $20 so I bought a genuine fake Rolex. I asked him how much the watch cost him. He admitted he only paid $7 so I gave him another $10 & told him the ten was for the watch & the twenty was for the story. That's the story of my genuine fake Rolex & we have been getting a laugh out of that for 15 years now. It's the worst fake have ever seen. It has really bad plating (thick in areas, peeling off in others) a cheap plastic face etc. It's a $7 Chinese watch that says Rolex but that just makes the story all that much better. That guy was among the most interesting people I have ever met while traveling. He was a scammer but he was personable & had an interesting life story.

+uniVoical There are a few Rolex quartz models. Most common is the Quartz Date. They stopped producing quartz watches in 2001. I'm pretty sure that all current models have a sweeping hand. Patek Phillipe make several models with tick over second hand that are either hand wind or automatic. They also make some watches with a tick over minute hand (like a rail station clock it moves when the second hand reaches 12 rather than slowly moving round all the time)

I have a really good fake and compared it to the real one in the jewelry store and it was near identical. The only giveaway was polished sides on the bracelet...that and the fact that my watch is off by like 15 minutes each hour, lol. I bought a fake Rolex on the streets in Mexico many years ago. I thought it looked really nice and the $30 U.S. price was right for the look of the watch. Another reason I bought it was I thought that would truly be a memorable "Mexico tourist" thing to do, a nice adventure in Mexico. The watch worked well it's whole life and lost only a few minutes per year. I gave it away about 3 years ago to a grateful friend who wanted it. He says it still works & looks fine...almost 20 years later!
