I was at my local Guitar Center last week and while there a cop came in. I ask what was going on and they told me that a piece of used gear came in and had been reported as stolen. When you sell something to Guitar Center (or anywhere in Indiana) you must have a valid ID and the item goes on "Police Hold" until it clears. So, some loser brings in a stolen piece of gear, has his ID photocopied knowing full well that the serial numbers are going to be ran against a database of stolen goods, and sure enough they drive right to to guys house and arrest him. How stupid do you have to be?

Marko Polo I have no idea. It had a serial number, that is all the guy said. Could have been anything. Otherwise you're a bloomin' idiot and you can expect the police to be at your door soon!

The pawn shop I work at is charged $1.50 for every transaction as a "tax" so the cops can buy software to monitor each pawn or purchase we make. They have a dedicated officer who does nothing but work the pawn shop cases in the county. That's why it doesn't pay for us to do any transaction under $5.00 with that tax.

From my 17 yrs of Pawn Loss Prevention experience, less than 1% of all loans or purchases turned out to be stolen. Like Rick from Pawn Stars said "why would a pawnbroker even want to take in a piece of stolen merchandise?
@randy109

Right you are! In the Pawn Broker business taking in stolen merchandise is the quickest way to get your license pulled. Working with the Cops is the only way to go.
@geomodelrailroader

Old Man, Rick, and Hoss said it stolen goods are more of a hassel then they are worth, they cost the shop money, Old Man calls them a pain in the ass, Rick and some of the main brokers don't want them, and stolen items bring the cops. once a crook fills out a ticket that data is sent to the FBI and when the item shows up as stolen the cops show up to raid the shop and take every item listed as stolen as evidence and during the time this is going on the crook is already in jail.

I worked in pawn shop in San Francisco in the 90s and that was true for our store as well. We didn't want stolen stuff no matter what kind of deal was being offered. People would try to appeal to a sense of greed that we didn't have.. The legitimacy of the business has more value than making a few fast and easy dollars. We always complied with the police.
@geomodelrailroader
@geomodelrailroader 10 жыл бұрын
ldchappell1 indeed buying a stolen item is the quickest way to lose your licence. once a stolen item is brought in the broker needs to file a report with the local police department and fax the same form to the FBI. if an item shows up a stolen they will take it.

+Tony Gallo Woah, now! Don't start quoting facts or making sense. Many YT commenters are just here to be jealous that Rick and his family have a successful pawn shop and TV show and/or call it fake or scripted. News flash: Yes, the TV show is scripted. Yes, they know what is going to be brought in and have the experts already on hand to come give their opinions on days they are shooting. That's why we only see the interesting and/or big money items on the show. But, it is still primarily a pawn shop, and 90+% of his business is people actually pawning items, not selling them outright. People that pawn items generally don't want to be on the TV show. I read his book, and have actually visited the shop last time I was in Vegas.

my best friend is a cop Cory's statement is true every Pawn Shop is visited by the sheriff each day and the Pawn Shop has a direct line to the police. Every computer in a Pawn Shop is connected to the police and FBI databases. If an item is bought, sold, or pawned the person has to fill out a background check and this form is faxed to the police and the FBI. This form shows the item being bought, sold, or pawned and also shows if the buyer has any red flags also known in Cop Speak as 1099s. If the person is wanted or the item is stolen Cory calls in his muscle Antwan and the guy and the item is held until the police arrive.
@johnsiebelink4287
@johnsiebelink4287 7 жыл бұрын
I've pawned things before, they always take your picture, your ID, and thumbprint. The reason they have to hold on to your item for a certain amount of time after you pawn it is so they make sure it's not stolen. Cory was absolutely correct
@texasitnerds8070
@texasitnerds8070 6 жыл бұрын
I work directly with pawn shops and scrap metal entities. I actually setup the software system. The way it works is the pawn shops or metal recycling entities purchase a software that keeps and on-site database for their own customers kind of like a CRM system. At the end of each day they hit a button for close out and it generates a report that then gets sent to private third-party databases that charge law enforcement entities a fee to access the database. In quite a few states in the u.s. they use a system called leadsonline. In fact all GameStops in the nation use leadsonline as well as every pawn shop in Texas. So technically no the police computers are not directly connected in any sort of way. The police department pays a fee to be able to access the database that organizes and mines the data.

1. No one is forcing the seller to bring the item to the pawn shop. 2. No one is forcing the seller to accept the offer. 3. If you want full value for your item, don't go to a pawn shop. 4. Just because they put a price tag of x amount of dollars for an item, doesn't mean they'll get x amount of dollars for that item.

Yeah, and they are in Las Vegas the King of the CCTV Cameras. Every Casino within 10 Miles of Rick's shop have "Facial Recognition" software at all their chokepoints of entry and exit. If a Pawn Broker wants to Lose His Ass he would deal in stolen merchandise. You are SO right with your comment.

This show, even though I like it, is NOTHING like a real pawn shop. Nothing. Most pawn shops are where the desperate go to get a little cash for their regular, mundane everyday items. TV's, DVD players and DVD's, game consoles and games, watches (Timex, not Rolex) and all kinds of power tools and garage items. Some have a few cheap guitars, amps, stereos and other odd ball items, but for the most part it's like going to a small department store. And their prices are very inflated. I recently priced a few items just to see if their was any decent savings. Nope. You may save 10 to 15% on average, a few items were 20% cheaper, but you have no idea of the history of the item and it may only last a week before it's fried. Shop elsewhere.

+Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd The Pawnshop I went to was actually priced 10% higher than retail at walmart, needless to say I never went back. They're not bad places for common antiques like Nintendo 64's, items that you might buy out of childhood sentiment. But Ebay is generally much better. Cut out the middleman. You're right though Pawn Stars is dealing with higher class items, but they're in Vegas where they can, and have to.

Charlie Foxtrot The 3rd Trader markets are always preferable for me. Most of my goods either come from retail chains, or from privately owned stalls at the market. One is reliably cheaper and more diverse, the other is more reliable in quality and consistency.

Yes, because it makes perfect sense to buy something for $1000 and sell it for $1000. If your business buys $10,000,000 worth of merchandise a year, but pays $50,000 for utilities, $250,000 for the building, $1,000,000 for staff, $500,000 for restoration/appraisals/authentication, and who knows how much on other operating costs, they would have $7.2 million to work with. You can knock 1% off or $1 million for SHRINK, so $6.2 million. So 38% of the sale would go to overhead and theft. If they pay 50% value, they get 12% of the sale as profit. To expect more is idiotic.

Why Thank You.....It's true. All of these pathetic shows are. Go into a REAL pawn shop sometime. Almost everything you look at will have something wrong with it because they got lied to by the person that pawned it. They are too lazy to check their stuff thoroughly or run audio gear through it's paces. They only win by the nature the types of people that are likely to deal with a pawn shop. This whole business of exploiting the desperate and then trying to glamorize it pretty well turns my stomach. Yes.
