I read this book when I was 14 in original Russian. The prose is incredible. And it was bizzarre how well Nabokov writes romance on a taboo subject with such a well developed anti-hero Humbert. But yeah... it is irksome...

In my honest opinion nobody should compare the books to the movies. I cannot express how horrible the movies were to me! The movies didn’t do Lolita justice, they only sexualized her, a child. That’s not what Nabokov wanted, he wanted the viewers to see how messed up Humbert was in his delusions versus the reality.
