I collect French antiques and my whole house is furnished with antique Louis XVI furniture, as well as Napoleon III and other styles. Please remember that ormolu is gilded bronze, not brass. Rick is quite right when he's talking about this clock. And if you think the price is way off, the value of an antique clock is determined by who made the clock - you can't say every antique clock like this is valued at 4k.

I would like to make some corrections; - 1) The clock case of C. 1850 was cast in a sand mould (made from a wooden pattern) and then hand finished. 2) The mercury amalgam was painted on as thinly as possible because gold happens to be valuable. 3) The gilders didn't sit around breathing in the vapour, they knew of the dangers. 4) But he 's right in pointing out that contrary to popular American belief, things like this can in fact be made without reaching for the box of power tools.

That's crazy what people went through to make stuff back in the 19th century. Another thing I've read about was that lead was everywhere and used in almost everything back in the 19th century, I guess because it was easier to work with than harder metals. Apparently they even put it in wine because it seemed to make it taste better.

Actually the way they do it is, they mold the clay, cover the clay with wax, another layer of wax, then bake it, and pour bronze into the layer where the wax was. That's how most bronze sculptures were made, the "vanishing wax" method.
