@Sneag3l
@Sneag3l 8 жыл бұрын
Isn't the point of the expert to guarantee the deal is solid for the buyer rather than the seller? For all we know, the seller could know more than the expert, but that doesn't mean the buyer doesn't want to verify the seller's claims. Not saying that's necessarily what's happening here, but you shouldn't rule it out.
@Kalmo_
@Kalmo_ 7 жыл бұрын
I love how when the seller said "It's worth a lot more." the so called "expert" instantly backs down on his claims and goes on the defensive and says something along the lines "It could be a lot more." for an expert to give an opinion he seems really unsure about it's price, not that historians are even trained in selling weapons..
@c7z131
@c7z131 7 жыл бұрын
invalid name he said it could be because when it's sold at auction people set the price. If two people really want it then they can go as high as 30k.
@Geographus666
@Geographus666 7 жыл бұрын
I have the feeling the experts often tend to price items more conservatively if they are advising the buyer, not the seller. That does not need to be trying to lowball the seller. You need to consider that they are advising a person who wants to resell the item and not collect it. Their job is to make shure that the buyer will be able to resell the item in a reasonable time and make a reasonable profit on it. If they evaluate an item too optimistically, the buyer will end up paying more for it and has a much higher chance to sit on it for a while in order to make a good profit of it, or will be required to sell it for a tiny profit to get a quick sale. And since the experts usually get paid for an evaluation, they want their customer to be happy with their advise or they will not get called in again. I know, it's a TV show, but this is also how it works in the real world.

that gentleman with the sword has been appraised many times by Craig and being the professional he is, quotes a correct/accurate price based on the market for said items. EVERYTIME he is quoted he says "that is way too low!" Craig is an expert and has such vast knowledge. I would not even begin to negotiate with that man when he consistently wants the price that he sets no matter what the upraisers say.

Yup, even Spain which had the best land armies of the era, the vaunted "tercios" usted German mercenaries, those were undisciplined, troublesome and no very reliable but absolutely fearless and quite efective when used properly, and yes, many of them favored oversized swords and dressed on very colorful clotthing, they dared the enemy to attack them, crazy mofos.

@mobdb5478
@mobdb5478 7 жыл бұрын
You know nothing about swords... only way to last 400 years is to be incredibly well kept, oiled once a month and never touched with bare hands unless oiled afterwards... If they are so casual, I can only conclude the blade is bad ass but a FAKE non the less.
@a1.70
@a1.70 7 жыл бұрын
Exactly, all exposed steel will want to rust. Touching any exposed steel, such as your blade, with your bare hands will leave oils and salts that will eat their way into your blade and eventually leave pits. Wooden handles can be treated with a light coating of lemon oil or tung oil to help prevent cracking. Blades must be protected from moisture at all times

Average GERMAN made two handed swords were no wheres near 15 pounds in weight, that's fucking ridiculous. A real two handed zweihander would way no more than 6 pounds at the most, high quality ones made by excellent weapon smiths would typically be in the range of 3-4 pounds with a longsword being 2.4-3.4 pounds.
@croatianwarmaster7872
@croatianwarmaster7872 8 жыл бұрын
eh I say 6-9 pounds because there are some real big ones 6ft long or a bit longer,and tbh 8 lbs sword that is very long and well balanced isn't all that heavy

I am thinking given how late this sword was made, and how wide the blade is and how thick the blade is, it is most likely a very well made, solid "bearing sword" to be carried in a parade or simply kept as a decoration. The guy who said it was used in battle is probably wrong. I don't think a lot of swords we have left with us today were used in battle. I am not saying it should be broken or look like shit, but you should see some tell tale signs of use. Dents on the side rings of the guard, knicks in the edge, scrapes along the flat of the blade near the hand. Gorgeous sword, properly made in Solingen, probably use-ABLE but used in battle? Doubt it. And "lopping off poleaxe heads" oh please.
@wetlettuce4768
@wetlettuce4768 7 жыл бұрын
Sparrowhawk You're right in the fact this sword most likely never saw combat since matchlock muskets/arquebus and pikes were the order of the day in early 17th century Europe. However I would mention that you can still get swords that have been to war but those will be cavalry sabres and officers swords both of which were used right up to WW1

Rozzok something weighing that light would be trash and easy to destroy honestly. Considering a good sword for me is 4 inches thick with a weight of 25-35 pounds so it can pack a heavy and deadly blow to kill enemies. But you know I guess for back then light was relevant and ok...

+Lino Silva Well, he's not entirely wrong. It _was_ on occasion used on the front lines of battles- there are contemporary sketches from the Renaissance period depicting this particular usage of the weapon, such as at the Battle of Kappel in 1548, and accounts of mercenary companies with entire armies of multiple thousands of men wielding the weapons (if those thousands weren't used on the front lines, I'd be happy to know what purpose they served, considering swords are useless at long distance). There were multiple other roles for the sword that he doesn't touch on at all, however, thereby misrepresenting it. Halfswording, for one, which was exactly what you did with it after you were finished displacing pole weapons to close distance. That it could cut heads and legs off like melting through a stick of margarine, of course, is amusing and wrong, as was his remark about "the cavalry" patiently stationed behind the Doppelsöldner, which I don't recall ever seeing or reading in any historical texts.

That is a "Flamberge" or "Bidenhänder", used by Landsknechte, who were named "Doppelsöldner", double Soldiers, who fought in the 30-Year War in first Front - they got the double payment. In Germany, Originals are available from 4000,- Euro to 8000,-

I am guessing that the "AF" on the blade stands for "Andrea Ferrara" which was a trademark of sorts used by some of the swordsmiths of Solingen Germany. You see variations of that name a lot on Scottish basket-hilted broadswords, since many of the blades for those were made on Solingen. They used an Italian sounding name because Italian swords were considered to be better quality, and thus they could charge more for them. What would be interesting is if there actually was a swordsmith with that name, and that is his actual makers mark!
