I've made wine before I found Paw Paw on youtube. I always thought you had to use wine making yeast, fancy air locks, carboys, sanitizers...etc. You don't need any of that, Paw Paw's simple recipe is awesome. I'm working on my 4th batch. I live overseas and don't have access to Welch's grape juice frozen or otherwise but you can use any 100% juice, just stick to the recipe and directions and you'll be fine. A big thank you to Paw Paw!

Hey PawPaw; gotta tell you, my very first batch of your recipe--but with 100% tart black cherry juice--turned out fantastic! I used wine yeast that can handle a higher alcohol and wide temperature range. I drank half of it as soon as it was done and put the other half in the fridge. It came out between 18-20% ABV and you can definitely feel the kick! When a neighbor came over and wanted to try some, I poured her about 1 oz in a shot glass...she took ONE sip and a couple minutes later said "OMG...that went right to my head and I feel warm all over!" Yup...we are talkin' some good stuff here! LOL. THANK YOU! Oh, and since it was TART cherry juice, it did need some back-sweetening, but being on the keto diet I really didn't want to add any sugar...so a squirt of liquid stevia went in...and it worked perfectly and is carb-free. DIET WINE! :-D

One other comment, about the mention of using a balloon - and this works fine. Sometimes I've put a balloon, WITH A PINHOLE or 2 IN IT, on the top of the bottle. The balloon will inflate a little during fermentation, and the pinhole allows the fermentation gasses to escape and keeps the bugs and outside air out of the bottle/jug. I 100% agree - MAKE A BATCH, keep it simple, and get hooked. You can always play with making it fancier/more complicated, if you'd like, another time.

I have been making wine this way for many years and never had any problems. I use Potassium Sorbate because some of my friends like a sweeter wine and I can add extra sugar and not have to worry about it starting to ferment again. I make it in 5 gallon batches so I have to bottle it for later use. Haven't blown any corks or busted any jars yet.

I've made a lot of wine over the years - fancy and simple. It's all good. About 11 1/2 gallons in the process right now. 3 different kinds. Besides drinking it myself, it makes nice gifts for friends and family. Mostly made from fresh or frozen berries that I grew - some store-bought. I drank a bottle of homegrown elderberry wine last night. Next to be ready was made from raspberries, blackberries and blueberries - 3 gallons - haven't bottled it yet, but it's delicious. I like to make a lot because it can get smoother after aging a bit. But you're absolutely right. It's not difficult. People get intimidated and are afraid to try. Another good video. Thanks! Well, I saw your welches wine video two days ago, and today I mosied on up to the local homebrew store and picked up 3 bubblers and 4 bungs.. 3 for 1 gallon bottles and 1 for a 5 gallon plastic water bottle. Paid a whopping $12. Money well spent in my book, but that's just me. I didn't want to chance making a mess in the closet! (and I really wanted to see the bubbles, I'm special like that) haha. And I'll never have to spend that money again, those bubblers are going to do the job for years to come. The problem I ran into was finding a glass bottle. I can't believe that no one sells mott apple juice in glass gallon containers anymore. I looked everywhere! But of course that gave me the reason to buy a couple gallons of glass bottled table wine. Moscato being one of my all time favorites. =) Oh what will I do! haha Guess it's drinking time. I did buy a gallon of apple juice for $2.18 I figure I'll try making cider in the plastic bottle it came in. If it fails hell it's only a few bucks gone. The local cider house makes a mean honey and black tea cider that actually put cider on the map for me. Before that I hated the stuff. Always so bland! So I figure I'll back sweeten it after it's done with a cup of honeyed tea and see what happens. Thanks for being an inspiration, and contributing to what I can damn well bet is going to be an obsession with making my own AFFORDABLE alcohol. Just wait until this summer.. when peaches come into season, and melons.. berries.. Oh buddy!

Paw Paw's recipe is the same as the old USAF recipe, it's a surprisingly good quality wine to be so simple and cheap. I learned about it from watching my dad (USAF Ssgt) and his buddies do it. It's the same recipe right down to the Welch's, and it's time tested. I don't drink either, but wine is a good low tech way of preserving the juice. I quit math too when they told me naught divided by naught = 1. Naught divided by naught = hardtimes; so you best be puttin' up some wine.

That is EXACTLY what I just told myself. I tried to find glass gallon jugs everywhere and was horribly unsuccessful. I remember mott apple juice used to come in those.. but now it seems the only place you can find gallon glass jugs is in the cheap wine section. Well, I don't need much of an excuse to buy alcohol most days anyway. Cheers!

Big Dan , if you don't mind not getting to the bottom of a full jug, check Amazon. They have a number of varieties, as well as corks and air locks. Myself, I'm patiently waiting to find the bottom of this Carlo Rossi jug to get started! Cheers!

Try as I might I can't seem to find gallon jugs for less than $15 a piece shipped to my door, same price as a jug full of wine at the store! Even in packs of 4 they sell for $30+$30 shipping! Highway robbery. I checked out a local homebrew supply, while I didn't see 1 gal jugs at the time (this was before I realized they were nonexistant in stores) the store did have 5 gallon carboys for $25, far cheaper than any I've seen online. I picked up a bunch of bungs and bubblers today while I was there and drooled over the vast array of grain and beer supplies--someday!
@NcalBiker7 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean about the cost. That's why I'm working on this half full jug now! Why pay the same price for an empty bottle, as for a full one...) I'd never thought about making my own until I watched this video. Older I get, the cheaper I get...ha!
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
Why are you fellers so worried about finding a glass jug? And who says it has to be a gallon? I use one cup of sugar per liter of juice and a pinch of yeast.
@garyhardwick26056 жыл бұрын
Have you tried "Jacking" your wine yet for potency? Jacking is Freezer Distillation. If you freeze it the alcohol and water will separate. Turn your plastic jug upside down and let it drip until there is nothing but white ice left in the jug. This Doubles the potency....Whew! made that Welch's batch taste real good.

I have used apple juice from aldi, and its about $1.89 for 2 litres. I just put some yeast directly in the bottle and put on a OZ-Tops cap(it lets carbonation build up, and no bottle explosions). I can have it sweet and low alcohol or let it try out, and its just like a strongbow apple cider thing.
@DoingItCheap7 жыл бұрын
I am going to try that !!! But I think I will remove some juice to make room for sugar and then add yeast !
@steviebboy697 жыл бұрын
Well I do tip some out to make headroom,and drink that but yes adding extra sugar would increase the alcohol. This is just a super quick low alcohol drink. well its about 5% but it still gets me pretty pissed. Try and look up those oz-tops thinks they last for years. They are Australian made , but I think there is a USA made one.

Interestingly, I stumbled across this video referenced in a firearms reloading forum. I'm curious enough that I think I'm going to have to give it a try, even though I'm not really much of a wine drinker (I prefer either a dark or a very hoppy IPA style beer). What would happen if you had a container that could handle the pressure and kept it sealed? A 2-liter carbonated drink bottle will fail at about 150 psi, so cutting that in half to 75 psi would be a safe working pressure. In fact, I have made a device that allows me to pressurize liquids in a 2-liter bottle so that I carbonate them. Some things are good carbonated, some are ones that you will definitely put on your list of things that you won't do again. For example, milk, coffee, and tea are not good carbonated. :) If you put your mixture in a 2-liter bottle and sealed the top all the way, would the yeast survive the pressure and would you end up basically making some sort of champagne? Oh, and a balloon would work to reduce the pressure build up somewhat since it would expand and give a larger expansion area.

"Wine out of tea" ...It's called Kombucha lol. Been around for thousands of years, just let it sit and ferment on the counter, and it gets stronger and stronger, and the alcohol content goes up :)

WARNING!!! Pulled my first batch of grape wine and let it chill over knight. Poured some into a litte wine glass like Paw has, what a coincidence. Had good color and smell. Took a sip and Wow.. Did the Pawpaw hibe jibe's. Tasted sweet like grape juice, then I felt the warmth. this stuff has a little kick. G/F came running in from my reaction and ready to dial 911. Told to try some. After her reaction she put the glass down. Turned back around and saw she drank the hole glass. guess I better make some more. The rest will be done in a few days.Pomegranate, apple and cherry.

Lol your wife seems like a fun person. But a little panicky and quick to act on that 911 buttons. 😝

Grocery store yeast just can't live in high amounts of alcohol. Perfect for home made wine, though. If you can run into champagne yeast, get it! You can add sugar and re-run your vats 2 and 3 times with that yeast. Then you better sit down to drink your wine. :) Cheers!
