I was just at Dragon Con also on Labor Day weekend. 've been part of the fallout cosplay group and in the parade for six or seven years now, and we had our biggest Fallout group photo shoot ever by a large margin. The group has always been a good size but this time we had close to 300 people. The show really got people excited again like we hoped it would. There was at least one woman from Obsidian there, and a guy who did/does work for Bethesda too. We even had the voice of Shepard from mass effect in our group going incognito as a ghoul.

This was my school’s first year exhibiting at an event of this scale and it was INSANE! As a high school we typically do events much much MUCH smaller but I had a moonshot dream of showcasing my students’ work at PAX this year and through trial by fire, we made it happen and we had a blast. PAX really is just this amazing atmosphere of fun and excitement even when you’re there working. We always made sure to give the kids time to explore and enjoy every element of the con and we had a blast every single day. We’re looking at getting a bigger booth presence next year and doing it right because we had NO IDEA what we were really getting into as exhibitors. We showcased games built in Unity and Unreal by my high schoolers that were running in custom arcade machines also built by students within our school and all of the key players got to come and show off their work, so we were psyched just to get that much off the ground! I’ve attended twice as a fan but never paid too much attention to the details of the indie booths and how they decorate and make their booths pop, so we definitely learned so much in that regard to make next year even better. Glad you enjoyed the event and hope to see you next year!

Tim, loved to meet you at one of these events, you seem like a awesome guy, I went to PAX east around 2018, it was the only one I ever went too, and it was a great time, unfortunately it was the final trip I took with one of my buddies who sadly took his life shortly afterwards. But I truly feel that while we were there, he had a splendid time. It's a great time to just walk around, the expo hall also called to us very heavily!

I love buying pretty dice, but I have only kept a very few for myself, they’re wonderful presents to give to people. 😊 In Australia we’ve a dice shop called Roll With Advantage, and every time I order something from them, there’s always a hand-written thank you note with the parcel. Just delightful.

It's wild to me that a convention that's spawned from one of the many internet gamer comics of the olden days is now one of (if not) the biggest gaming industry events that exists today Gosh dang interesting stuff, I don't think I could survive on the floor of one of them as I'm too timid and easily overwhelmed I'm glad there's still something there though considering the way that other events (like to say) aren't always the best The only thing that's sort of similar for the IT world would be defcon and the other hacker camps and cons, which are definitely on the fun side (but again, I don't think I'll ever go) Cosplay is something real special, I love seeing people show of their work and they'll often have poses and stuff rehearsed which is always really great to see!

Ironically the faults you mentioned were ones I had at this past PAX (East). I went to a two-part talk that included Tramell Ray Isaac, who also worked on Fallout (I wonder if you remember him)! I stayed afterwards for a few questions and some folks came up to him for critiques on their portfolios and/or giving him business cards :p Also it really feels like it's getting more corporate with these bigger companies showing up and taking up more of the floor space. I guess the expo needs to survive somehow. Hopefully the Indie Megabooth comes back sooner than later.

1:20 -- "That's the thing about GDC, the whole vibe has "work" to it, and not just work, but networking. [...] You run into people who are new in the industry and there's this desperation of "Can you get me a job? Can you get me onto your team?"." Almost wonder if that over-saturation at GDC (and the higher stress levels in the air) would actually make PAX the *more* *fruitful* event to attend for people new to the industry.
@CainOnGames4 ай бұрын
I’m not sure, but it certainly couldn’t hurt to attend. But I’m not sure how you’d get a meeting with an industry person there. Most are giving talks or showing products, and there’s not really any one-on-one time. Btw, I was describing GDC as it was decades ago, in the 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s. I haven’t been to a GDC in this decade.
