I am an old man now, but when I was younger like 9th grade or so me and my friends played D&D, but we played other games too like Indiana Jones RPG, Ghostbusters RPG, and there was this other one that I can not remember the name, but the Russians had taken over America and you were part of a resistance movement. These last games used only 6 sided dice, and were just as fun as D&D. I really miss those days, because now I am disabled and live in an area where no one plays RPGs and I can't travel the 2 hours to play with a group. I tip my hat to these young guys that are helping show that there is other types of RPGs out there and not just D&D or pathfinder.

Rym DeCoster I hear that Rym is flying over (unless Scott wants to try out our hospitals again). ;^) Man this is more refined than the previous ones, I was stuck outside with Churba and LackofCheese.

Now I want to write an rpg that uses Rock'em Sock'em robots as the conflict resolution mechanic.

Old video, I know, but justo to comment: There are A LOT of classic games WAY more engaging than D&D that are not "Indie" or "Forgist" or "New Wave". I tried several "Indie" games and a lot give me an awful feeling of breaking my immersion by making me a sort of demigod/mist that hovers above my character, but I don't feel like I am HIM. And that to me breaks immersion terribly, turning it into a Narrative-enhancing trick and not a role-playing game. Like in your definition I don't feel like the outcome is personal, but just a decent narration (probably not as good as something well done by a good author in a book, though) with a level of immersion not even as high as reading. It took me a good number of games to really grasp what felt wrong for me. Like when you say we want to tell good stories, I feel like that is not a roleplaying game for me. I want to LIVE a decent enough story. But to me the LIVING is extremely more important than telling a slightly better story.

This was fun, as all these talks are, but i was hoping for more advice on how to improve D&D or Pathfinder role-playing other than “play a different game.” I don’t want to turn my epic medieval fantasy adventure in a sultan's harem or horror survival game.

I honestly don't think there is good advice for improving D&D-adjacent games other than "be a good game master". Its rules are just very focused on encouraging a particular kind of game.

Game: a task in which one recieves a score upon completion of said task.

You don't get a score for playing patty-cake, the Stanley Parable, or tag. Are these things not games?
@abstractbybrian10 жыл бұрын
Rym DeCoster Correct, not games. In other video, can't remember which, you state that the Stanley Parable is an interactive narrative.

I have heard about all of those narrative focused RPG's but I lack any real interest in them. As a player and a GM, I don't care about the story, I care about the experience in play with the story being a by-product of play. I should note that collaborative storytelling games massively pre-date RPG's so the real innovation of these tightly focussed narrative rpg's is the additional novelty and complexity of the mechanics rather than being a new type of game.

In that definition solo RPG's are not RPG's and I don't think that holds up.

Fundamentally disagree with this on so many levels.
