Aeon Flux is like a Heavy Metal comic come alive! Peter also worked on a weird Alexander the Great anime in a similar style! Cryo is the successor of Exxos, who made weird alien games and claimed they got these ideas implemented into their heads by their alien overlords or something. It’s a match made in heaven, or hell. I don’t know.

Great video, as a big Aeon Flux fan I've been wanting to see more of the Pax Corpus game for a while now- so I salute you for making it through lol. I recently found a trailer for the AF game from E3 96 and it showed some quick bits from some cutscenes, specifically the shot at 33:30 was in the trailer but with Aeon instead. The character in this game definitely has some Aeon energy in the cutscenes. Definitely can see the story remnants of AF in there, instead of shooting the Pax Corpus into space the goal definitely woulda been shooting the Demiurge into space, the office of the villain in this game looks pretty much exactly like Trevor Goodchild's office in the show, the cube thing in space looks almost exactly like a giant cube habitat thing in an episode that was in the ocean, that executioner boss showed up in some early screens for the AF game, and the changing suits section I imagine woulda been changing into a Breen soldier outfit. I wonder what was up with the chess room boss, that was kinda cool. That E3 96 trailer had some new voice acting from Trevor's VA, would be cool to hear any stuff recorded from that version of the game since even cutscenes seemed to be done but alas I doubt we ever will.

Glad you enjoyed the video, appreciate the comment and extra info! It's been fascinating going through all the trailers, promos and images just to compare them to the final versions. To add a few thoughts about yours on Pax Corpus: usually Cryo games had good sound design (i actually like the spooky song haha)? At least what I remember of playing a few of those as a child/teen. Also the grittiness of Aeon Flux that found its way in some design of the game (like the executioner) is reminiscent to me of the culture of European cyber &/or punk comics and influenced a lot, in their early days before Cryo (especially Captain Blood), the devs. The kind of "psychedelic" vibe of the temple also reminds me of french amateur/demoscenelike Amiga games. I haven't delved into Cryo games in years (I was kind of obsessed by this company, having a very French experimental vibe that I related to, probably because I'm french obviously) but this video reminded me of why I actually loved those game: there is really a strange, like another comment said, nostalgic but also very special way that those early 3D games played that I really love. Thanks a lot for your in depth video. Also, check out Fade to Black, it really seems to me to be similar to Pax Corpus (haven't played Corpus tho but I guess FTB is more RPG-like) P-S: the french small tv clip of the original Aeon Flux game says that the animations where motion captured, which is kind of funny when you think about the Pax Corpus's death pose...
@SeanSeanson3 жыл бұрын
Funnily enough if I was to compare Pax Corpus to any game, it would 100% be Fade to Black. You can tell they are both still trying to 'feel out' how to make action games work in 3D, but I guess thats what makes them fun to revisit like you said. Motion capture on the death pose! Would have loved to be in the room when that got put together haha

hey Sean! here is very quick summary of three g o o d (for real) Cryo games if you ever want to check out more: Commander Blood & its sequel: a follow-up to the cult classic Amiga/Atari ST/Amstrad & Macintosh game Captain Blood but with a bigger budget and 90s technology. It retains the appeal of the original game (having conversation with foreign alien while visiting solar systems) now with full motion video and some kind of a real scenario (if I remember correctly). Lost Eden is a game similar to Atlantis but with prettier 2D graphics a way better ambiance in my opinion, starring the prince of a human/dinosaur kingdom on the brink of destruction...

This game really really was HELL to get through. I may still have heard of this game when I saw a cheat code entry of it in the German PlayStation Games magazine that I had during my early days of PlayStation ownership in the spring of 1998. I myself even wanted to make a playthrough videos for the game, especially since I was also stuck in certain situations such as how it was with the Executioner (or the Torturer whoever that was) that I had to look up at the same FAQ as you did. After finishing the game for the first time, I went to the Crappy Games wiki to write an article of the game for it which also showcases the terrible experiences I had when playing the 2nd level in Mission 4. The wiki about the game on the Crappy Games wiki is there for you to read if you're interested. I was actually never aware that there was a bad ending to this game until you showed it to us, because I had the two Triangles and got the good ending first when I managed to complete the game for the very first time after all my struggles with it.
@NebLleb2 жыл бұрын
I looked it up, and there it was: An article of Pax Corpus based on your hellish experience. I mean, I personally feel that Crappy Games Wiki is basically a breeding ground of Autistic Nutters and Dunkey Stans, but DAMN. Makes you thankful for the Aeon Flux game we got being a hybrid of the film and cartoon rather than Pax Corpus, doesn't it?

I'm honestly so glad Drew Neumann's score for the Aeon Flux game (snippets of which are available on his album Eyespy, which also has most of the scoring he did for the original AF shorts and series) didn't seem to get used for this dire nonsense. It seems that some of his score might have been "reworked" for Pax Corpus (according to him) but nothing I've heard here sounds even remotely like his work. Thanks for subjecting yourself to this for our sake.

I remember seeing the previews for the Aeon Flux version of this game back in the day! I don't know why, but this playthrough made me think of Fade to Black, which, holy Hell, what a way to follow up Flashback (also from a French dev, if I recall correctly). Wait... Is one or both of us going to need to cover that game at some point?! Anyway, you are an absolute hero for playing through another Cryo game, especially without using save states. Also, does the manual fill in the plot gaps at all? Was there some sort of tie-in comic/book/something that explained things?
@SeanSeanson3 жыл бұрын
It is VERY fade to black, although it has been well over 20 years since I last played that game and I think it scarred me so much at the time that I've yet to build the courage to try it again. Think I'd definately enjoy it a lot more nowadays 😅 That manual more or less gives you some basic world building which I covered near the beginniner but otherwise no extra plot at all. The guy who did the game faqs walk through REALLY liked the game so did his best to cover and piece together as much of the plot as possible. Although he mostly just gives out about how little is explained 😂
@MakopoweredGaming3 жыл бұрын
@@SeanSeanson Yeah, it's been a LONG time for me with Fade to Black, as well. I do suspect that it has NOT aged well, but I'm now tempted to find out... If the majority of the plot was pieced together by the person who wrote the faq, I am impressed... but also wonder how much of it was head-canoned if there's that little to go on. Don't get me wrong, the premise sounds intriguing, but the cut-scenes are almost non-sensical, from what I could tell.

the game make sense knowing that they reused the demiurge episode of aeon flux which deals with the gnostic deity that yhwh(GOD) is the demiurge and u as the protagonist are trying to stop it. which is what ur technically doing just based on how they reused the plot of that specific episode for the game story.
@IvyS-s1s11 ай бұрын
also the executioner most likely got repurpossed from being Trevor Goodchild from aeon flux based on the episode it was based on being a medical area that got repurposed into what u see in the game as for the train scene it' similar to the gravity episode of season 2 of aeon flux u already see a lot of aeon flux motives being reused and repurpose in every level
@IvyS-s1s11 ай бұрын
The Luna base4 is supposed to represent Saturn cube which kinda goes with Gnostic belief and abrahamic religions obsession from judaism,christianity with new jerusalem and revelation and the kabba in islam, the whole stop apocalypse line is most likely a reference to the christian interpretation of the cube which oddly reminded of the design of portal cube pretty neat overall how they added gnostic theme into the game kinda like xenogears and the xenosaga and xenoblade series have done so as well same with ff7 also the game title translates from Latin into body peace =pax corpus or the body of peace and the demiurge episode of aeon flux really kinda gives u a idea of what this game is trying to convey based on how they repurposed the aeon flux plot into pax corpus
@IvyS-s1s11 ай бұрын
as for the 4 clones part and the color used kinda goes with 7 elements used to represent the star of david when u change from cube to cube it changes into the 7 elements that make up the star of david but if u just look a t them as they are shown to u once u select them they are just 4 elements of the zodiac signs rather neat that they would go this abstract into gnostic mysticism for a game story.
@IvyS-s1s11 ай бұрын
looking at level 5 being the rocket silo level it seems that what ur technically playing is the extended version of the demiurge episode that leads up to the episode start cause u even have some similar scene being reused in the cutscene after ep4,

also the final boss using a jetpack makes sense since in that specific episode of aeon flux trevor was using jet boots of sorts and looking at it known what the original story it was supposed to be based on kinda gave that scene a bit more context seem like the executioner an this level where suppose to be trevor goodchild related
