My mother did the same right before she retired for the whole family. We rented a house on the Disney property and the entire family stayed together for a week. It was a great experience that everyone enjoyed. It was even more memorable as my brother and his family transferred to Germany for the Army shortly after so we didn’t see each other again for a good part of my niece and nephews childhood. The whole point of saving money is be able to use it to enjoy life and create memories that last with family and friends. Money is a tool not a ends.

I was just thinking that there's plenty of other cheaper amusement parks they can go to. My area is a tourist area (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho) and we have a regular amusement park called Silverwood, an indoor/outdoor kids amusement park called Triple play and lake boat cruises.

Personally, I wouldn't pay that for Disney but at 62, I say she needs to enjoy retirement while she's still able to. I have family who can't go anywhere because they have a hard time walking. Just be careful to not use up too much of the nest egg.

she's got 1 million in savings. They're 62 and a lot of people are living to 90. Easy to go through 1 million in 30 years especially if one go them gets sick or needs nursing care. in my opinion, paying for other peoples vacations is something people only do if they have 5 million or more. 1 million is the cost of a small condo these days it doesn't go far like it used to. An old pickup truck is $50,000 in todays world.

Nursing home charge $10,000+ a month and its the cheapest one in our area. 1 million is the bare minimum for a retirement and throwing $50,000 at a vacation for the entire family is odd when you yourself are not rich at all. Its like, trying to play rich when your not.

$1.1 million isn’t as much as it used to be. If the stock market crashes tomorrow it could cut into that. $50K is more than she should be withdrawing in a year at a 4% safe withdrawal rate. She needs to plan to live another 25+ years, the average 63 year old will make it to 85

She may not even have to use it depending on their expenses, if ssi and pension can cover for 10+ years, that could be 10+ years of non stop growth in safe investments. Its better to enjoy life while she can bc the older she gets, the less likely she will be able to do something like this, hoarding your money and being alone is not worth it.

My 88 year old, retired Navy (Capt.) uncle is taking his two kids, their wives, four of their kids, and my mom, all expenses paid, to Germany next year. Spend it while you are still on this earth. There will be plenty for his two kids and grandkids when the time comes. I told my mom (80) that you should not pass up this opportunity. It is a once in a lifetime trip, and she's missed others that she regrets, but it was because she could not afford to pay her own way. This way, she'll be able to make the trip and not have to worry about money.

Disney cruises are the worst possible cruises you can pay for. They have the smallest and oldest ships of any fleet, the costs are astronomical compared to Royal Caribbean and Carnival. Worst deal for a sub par time on a boat that gets beat back and forth more than any other. I'd recommend spending half as much, being gone twice as long, and on a ship 4-5x's larger with one of other cruise lines

I would get money management just in case. You’re only 55. I think the average life expectancy in the US is 77.5 years, but many people live well into their 80s so that $1 million has to last you all of that and the unforeseen. $1m is a great start though. Good for you!!

You dont get taxed on your money if you dont withdraw from it. It only gets taxed once you withdraw from it.

Our family doesn't have a lot of money but we have taken a few trips and never regretted one single trip! We have funny stories and memories and pictures that can never be replaced! During the pandemic my DIL father died at the young age of 64! The pictures and the memories from these little trips that we took are priceless and I wouldn't take back any penny that we ever spent because you can't take it with you when you go! Suze orman says people first then things then money! Tomorrow is not promised to anyone! Go and bless your family❤

My parents took all three of us kids, plus spouses, plus ten grandkids on a week cruise to Alaska to celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary. My younger sister had completed treatment for Stage 3 breast cancer the previous year (diagnosed at 33), so they felt very strongly that they should do it while everyone was healthy. It was a wonderful vacation, and Mom (now age 92) still has plenty of money to live on, 24 years later.

I think they put pixie dust in my food on our Disney cruise. 3 Disney cruises later it hasn't worn off. I remember how stressful it was the first time because we didn't have debt paid off and we had never spent money even close to that for a vacation. On our 3rd and 4th cruises it was an unbelievable feeling to disembark and know that everything was paid, and no debt was incurred. We still have other financial goals to achieve like building an emergency fund, but we went a decade without a vacation, so we needed to have some good quality time together. Happy for this lady and her family getting to enjoy something together!

I wouldn't do it simply because the grand kids will say their favorite part was the swimming pool at the hotel. The memories will be for you grandma because the grand kids under 10 years of age won't remember much of this trip in 5 years.

I've traveled on what I would call exotic luxury tours to China, Africa and South America, and I've never spent ANYWHERE near that much money - not even half that amount. I wouldn't spend all that money on Disney. Still, it's her money and her decision, if it makes her happy.

That’s bc you are appreciative of what they do. Unfortunately not everyone is like that. I personally would love to do this for my family, but would pay for the tickets and they pay for the transportation and meals or something like that. It depends on the families circumstances. I absolutely agree with Dave. You’re not touching your 401 while it’s still earning. Use those earnings to create unforgettable experiences for your family. We’ve been traveling for many years now and recently my husband told me that most of his best memories of our family and kids are from those trips. I plan on doing exactly the same thing for my kids and grandkids. My husband and I never lived beyond our means, and spent money only on things that truly matter to us. For us, it’s travel and experiences.

My folks have a $1.6million nest egg with a pension, they own their home, and are 100% debt free. I wouldn’t encourage this for them. $50k is too much for this kind of expenditure

Well, she has saved up 30k, so only 20k out of 1.1 million. And if it’s growing that’s at least 100k on average in a years time. Plus she has a pension which she does her day to day spending. So if she takes 20k out per year she will be fine 💯

1. It's 5% of her retirement account. Not 5% of her net worth. 2. Even so, she said that she and her husband live off of their other income (pension and social security) and have no debt, so she doesn't touch her retirement account. There's an extremely high chance that she could do this once per year for the rest of her life and her retirement account balance would still grow considerably.

Wow my husband and I spent the same amount traveling around South America, North America, and Europe for 7 months. Including EVERYTHING like car rental, tours, accommodation, flights, food etc. And we are from Japan currently with the worst exchange rate in the last 30 years. The fact that people think it’s ok to spend that amount on a one week cruise is just madness, regardless of the money you have in your bank account. Or maybe great marketing from Disney since people think it’s ok as long as it’s a ‘one time thing’

I like Dave's analysis that the expenditure is the income on the nest egg (not living expenses) and probably once in a lifetime (kids age out of the magical Disney age fast & also probably rare to get all schedules aligned for 20 people). Plus, she has no debt, 7 figure+ net worth, so it is like a family themed "give like no one else" because she lived like no one else theme. Also, Disney Parks should sponsor Ramsey after this!

My mother in-law took the whole family in 2017 to Disney World and Universal Studios and a few beach days down there. There was one family member who refused to go. Me. It was right at our busy time of the year and so I worked, but I had a clean house and I was able to watch whatever movies or tv shows I wanted to at night, it was sort of a vacation for me too.
