This video explores the reasons why the free DAW program called Cakewalk By Bandlab is converting to a paid platform. We will cover what to expect and the type of new features we will see. There are two versions that will be available. The first is called Cakewalk Next and the second version is called Sonar.
I also cover some features I would like to see for the new version of Sonar. There is a bit of a rant when I talk about previous versions of Sonar but nothing is directed at Bandlab. In fact, it was Bandlab that saved the Cakewalk brand. At the end of this video I explore many options for you to pursue.
Cakewalk By Bandlab will not be developed any further once these new platforms will be released. For this reason some people may want to find a different DAW application that is still free. If that is the case then I recommend Waveform Free.

Here is a list of other DAWs that I have personally used that I find to be good programs. These platforms will cost money.

As just a hobbyist, I'm going to continue to use CbB. I do go back to the 8.5 days and still feel woefully under educated, so learning a whole different DAW is out of the question. If the new Sonar gets positive reviews, and the price is right, I'd consider buying it, but not subscription based. CbB is more than I'll ever need. As long as it remains stable, I really have no reason to pay for Sonar, other than the fun of playing with a new toy.

I am in exactly your situation...I am lookiung forward to new features that are in other daws standart by now like a "Chord Track" and NI KS Controller support. But beside this: Every single "Sonar Original plugin" works fine in Cakewalk by Bandlab (okok..the Roland R-Mix runs only when it wants too...most of the time I got a white screen, but sometimes its in a good mood and decides to come out of its bed ;-) ). So there is no rush for me. I activly switched 2009 from Logic and Cubase to cakewalk. It was barely known here in Germany, cause somehow they totally ignored the german market (ok. Cubase and Logic where german products) and I never did regret this. For me just the most stable and to the point workflow...

I'm still using Sonar Platinum in my 7th Gen i7 PC with 24GB ram and it runs like a champ. My most recent project finished with 82 tracks and numerous plugins. The "freeze track" option is a life saver. I've thought about changing but, if it ain't broke, don't fix it right?

I have been using a number of versions of Sonar, currently have Cakewalk by Bandlab. Most of my plugins came with Cakewalk by Bandlab or were purchased from Native Instruments. I have NI Komplete 14 Standard and love it. I will wait and see the benefits of the new products and if they look good, I will purchase them.

Sonar was the Cakewalk DAW before it was dumped by Gibson, and then restarted as "Cakewalk by BandLab". If you had Sonar Platinum, the first thing you noticed was reduced functions and options. I had one of those $150 lifetime updates back in the days of Sonar Platinum, and I was SO FURIOUS with Gibson in 2017 that I wrote them a nasty letter telling them I would NEVER buy any Gibson products. And I've remained true to that. I have a lot of guitars in my studio and not a one of them is a Gibson. Hopefully the restart of Sonar will bring us a product comparable to what we were all used to.

Nice throwback, I'm with you. This was like listening to great oldies that take you down memory lane. Fortunately, I'm still using my Platnum addition as well, It has some problems loading in some newer VSTs and VST3s at times, the search new software function is very slow, and dated, and would actively freeze up and you can't override the freezing software that it might scan like video FX Davinci Resolve Fairlight or FL studio (which by the way have a much better searching VST's format. Most people don't know that Cakewalk was one of the first to do a PC-based ''Dos'' Daw Greg Hindershott founded in 1987 then Widows in 1991, besides Protools ''Sound tools'' making drum chips for E-MU in 1989 launched in 1991 for Mac $6000 8bit system slow on midi implamintation...Lol Back to the current day, many sleep on the Ableton function in Sonar that mimics Ableton live ''Screen/Setup/Matrix View'' drop and drag the many samples ''Backing Traks'' that come with Sonar along with any sample drop and drag loops. Thanks for the video. Peace & blessings.

I don't know why people have not talked about the the built in Ableton functions that has been there since Sonar 8. I have used it a few times but working with loops like that is not my thing. If you don't already use it You should try Bandlab's version. It will import everything from Platinum and it feels like the same program. Many bug fixes and the VST search works much better. Older projects work inside Bandlab too. The only draw back is you need both Platinum and Bandlab installed on your computer. I even have Sonar X2 installed on my computer so I can get some of the plugins that came with that program to work inside Bandlab.

Guys I have been using Sonar since version 6 LE ..... and like Marcus, I have numerous versions right down to Platinum ...... the fact of the matter is the world is ADDICTED to CHANGE ..... WHY ? I can understand internet security issues keep both Apple and Microsoft constantly patching and upgrading their OS ...... but do musicians need all that constant change ? A few years ago I unplugged a computer from the internet permanently...... it sits in my studio running all my favorite software and hardware on Windows 7 ...... a closed eco-system for creativity never to be "upgraded" ..... running old music hardware (that has long ceased to get "driver updates" for new OS versions) and music software no longer being updated (such as our beloved Cakewalk DAW). I can finally spend some time creating music ...... instead of constantly learning new software ...... I use different (and more modern) computers for accessing internet..... and interacting with the rest of the world ...... problem solved 😁

Now supports 4K resolutions, fully sharp image is more stable than ever. Some icons have been changed to make them more elegant. The sonar icon is now circular with a sonar design in orange and is no longer a square icon. By Bandlab left completely, as if Cakewalk were actually independent. There's Cakewalk Sonar

Very nice detailed video explains it all. It's a good thing you have the purchased X3 with all those extra plugins you paid for already that they are just going to bring back again. Seems like you're in a real good position to just keep and use what you have already and then just get third party plugins. You could just stick with your x3 seems like there is so much there already not much more to desire I think :)

I am a hardcore cakewalk user and will continue to use it whether its free as bandlab or sonar once again and I have to pay for it. The best daw to use will always be the one you master. I know the channel owner hasn't responded to you yet. But I basically studied all the popular daws on the market. And I can say without fear that you can all produce award-winning material if you master the daw. If you have mastered cakewalk, there is no reason to change daw, as you will lose years of study. Unless of course you have to change for some hardware reason. Things I like about Cakewalk include the arranger feature, pro channel, and FX Cain's level of customization. These are some examples of resources that I won’t give up.

I still have producer 7 after years and it does everything I need especially with my hardware analog gear and third party plugins to compliment it. I think the best upgrades I could do now are hardware interface and maybe some of the excellent new behringer analog hardware I see that's come out or is releasing. When I started all this they didn't even have daws, I had a tascam 244 so for me using producer 7 today with third party plugins covers it all and I can get to the quality I need to publish something. --- is there anything that would hold you back besides native plugin availability that would be limiting for you if you stuck with just 7? Curious, thanks!
@marcuscurtismusic
@marcuscurtismusic 10 ай бұрын
I had a Tascam 244 too. We are going way back in time now. I loved that thing and wrote a lot of music using that device. X3 does everything I need but X3 also had many bugs. These bugs were addressed in Cakewalk by Bandlab and it looks and operates like X3. The nice thing about Bandlab's version is that it imports everything from Sonar so all those plugins work in Bandlab's version. I am surprised that you have not tried Cakewalk by Bandlab. It is still free and it will remain free, but it won't be available once the new DAW's come out. The one thing I wonder about is the ability of these older Sonar platforms to work with newer versions of windows. That would force an upgrade of some sort. I am not so sure that I would upgrade. It really all depends on the new features. I thought about upgrading for sentimental reasons just as a way to show support. I am not even sure I am going to do that. Right now ever thing is on a wait and see plan.

As time goes by somethings you said are incorrect. Sonar will be the same windows onlyNext is multi platform. Cakewalk by bandlab will only keep working for as long as they decide to keep it activated. They can pull the plug at any time in the future. Sonar will return to having different levels at different price points. So it is speculation but there will be a version that is very affordable as Noel put it.

I thought I made it clear that the things I said regarding the future of Sonar and Cakewalk Next was speculation and that I don't know anything for sure. This is why I wanted feedback from other people. Sorry for any confusion. I did see that some of the things that were stripped away from sonar are used in the promotion of the version that is soon to be released. This is what I base some of my predictions on. The Cakewalk Next Website said that once the new versions are released they are no longer going to allow you to sign up for the free version of Bandlab by cakewalk, but if you are a registered user you will still be able to install it and use it. This is what the website says and I was merely repeating it. Now, weather or not they honor that remains to be seen. Everybody's opinion is speculation.

Hi Marcus, great video! I did all that stuff, bought the V-Studio 700, still download stuff from my Cakewalk account, and I bought the Behringer X32 Producer to replace the V-Studio 700 as a control surface. Having used Cakewalk for so many years I would like to stick with it, and I suppose the thing is that if I changed to another software, it would have to work with the Behringer X32 as a control surface.....
@marcuscurtismusic
@marcuscurtismusic Жыл бұрын
Hi Louis, There are other DAW platforms that allow you to use the X32 producer as a control surface. Reaper, Cubase, and Studio One are all examples of this. Although I have not thoroughly tested them. Look for DAWs that use the MCU Program. Waveform Free is another free DAW that allows you to use the X32 as well. At this stage of the game I have used Cakewalk for decades. I have hundreds of older projects recorded using that software. The idea of importing them and moving them into a new DAW is a daunting task. I don't want to learn another DAW platform at this point. I guess it is hard to teach an old dog new tricks. I am sticking with Cakewalk for a number of reasons. I am just curious, Do you still have your V-studio 700? Did it find a good home? I gave my V-100 to my son and he still uses it today. What a solid piece of hardware that was. Roland did a good job with the V-100. I know there were more tech issues with the V-Studio 700.

@marcuscurtismusic hi Marcus, thanks for your prompt reply... To answer your question: I loved the V-Studio 700 to bits - it was the centrepiece of my music room . So arrogant of Roland to discontinue the Windows updates. I bought that system when I lived in Panama, so it was 110 volt (as well as 2 Wharfdale reference speakers and a Korg M3), so when I moved back to France I had to buy a transformer for all that gear. When I got tired of constantly looking for Windows update hacks, I threw it out - I didn't know anyone in France who even knew what it was.... I did some great work on it though....
@marcuscurtismusic
@marcuscurtismusic Жыл бұрын
@@LouisODwyer I think it's sad that you threw it out. As Indiana Jones would say, "It belongs in a museum" I had a 88 key Roland midi controller and around the same time they stopped with updates for the V-700 they ended updates for the midi controller too. By this time the new version of windows was out and this hardware did not work with it. Roland wanted you to purchase their new midi controller. I made sure my new midi controller did not say Roland. I understand that frustration.

Many features that were unique to Cakewalk /Sonar - years later - had been re-interpreted by other companies ... i.e. vintage channel strip emulations, console emulations, multiband comp, high bit rate and sampling, skylight UI , add ons, etc etc ... Noobs talk about their DAWs and market trends - as if - they chppse the pro's state-of-the-art tools ... and treat cakewalk - as if - it is not a 'pro' DAW ... they just show that they just have less than 15-10 years into music production ... Craig Anderton was/is/will be a visionary when it comes to digital audio production ... and there were a time that the Cakewalk/Sonar and Cubase were the platform of choice for digital audio production on PC ... FL Studio, Ableton and other plaraforms were the amateurs toys ... Studio One was trying to copy Sonar Skylight UI ... А сонары более поздних версий какие-то навороченные, но мне достаточно тех базовых функций, какие имеются в 4 версии)))))

Wonder if we can still 'acquire' cakewalk? Was about to pick up an old Roland A 800 pro. Oh well.

I had the model before the A-800 was released. When Roland released the A-800 pro they stopped support for the previous model. Windows 10 came out and Roland did not offer any drivers. The midi controller became useless. I only had the controller a for a few years. I started purchasing Yamaha midi controllers after that. I downloaded Cakewalk Next and experimented with it. I am excited to see what changes are made to the new version of Sonar when it is released. While you can't acquire Sonar you can still get Cakewalk by Bandlab for free. at least for now.

@marcuscurtismusic Appreciate the update. Saved me a paper weight. I'm sure it works fine as a straight midi cc controller. Of couse, maybe not if roland had implemented some sort of proprietary scheme specific to the software. Anyway, did read that there were issues with rubber coating on the buttons and sliders. Yuk. Thanks, agaun.

First, the TTS-1 should be installed. You should be able to call it up. It is even installed with the Bandlab version of Cakewalk. If you don't see it, then the first thing I would do is check plug in layouts. 1. To do this, open up an empty project 2. create an empty audio track in the clips pain 3. Right click Over the FX bin and go to insert software synth 4. go to plugin layouts and then manage layouts 5. When the window opens up, click on DirectX Instruments under plugin categories 6. You should see Cakewalk TTS-1 listed there 7. If it is not there, then go toward the bottom of the window and click on show excluded. Now only the excluded plugins will show up 8. once you click on excluded, go back to the DirectX instrument folder. 9. If you see it in the excluded folder, then highlight it and click on Enable plugin Now you should see it in your plugin lists. If the TTS-1 is not listed in excluded or enabled plugins, then it is not installed or Cakewalk does not see it. The TTS-1 is a directX plugin, so a VST scan will do no good. You will need to reinstall the plugin via Bandlab or reinstall Sonar Platinum It could also be that your plugin layout does not display the plugin. In that case, just change your plugin layout 1. To do this, right-click on the FX bin once again 2. Go to insert software synth 3. Go to Plugin Layouts 4. Choose a different layout. You should have 3 options. Sort by category, sort by manufacturer, and sort by type. Choose sort by type 5. Right click in the FX bin one more time and go to insert software synth. From there go to DirectX and the synth should be in there. You should now be able to insert the synth by using the browser tab. Press B on the keyboard to open up the browser. Click on the plugins tab inside the browser, then click on the plus sign under directX. The TTS-1 should be listed there. Click on it to use it in the project. If it is not listed, then it is not installed, and you will need to reinstall platinum. I believe you may be able to do a custom install and just reinstall the plugins you are missing. I hope you get it working. By the way, I would help you even if you did not subscribe.

I just found an old Cakewalk Overture 2.1 in my attic and it does run on my Windows 10 PC. Is this ok or should I go for more recent software? I'm new to this and would appreciated any advice.

Score Writer and Overture have been acquired by GenieSoft, Inc. As of August 13, 2001. I would go for more recent software, but if Overture works and fills all your needs that is fine too. I don't know how outdated it is.

Most of the plugins I showed in this video came free with the purchase of Sonar. A few of them I purchased. They were made by Cakewalk and came with it back when Cakewalk by Bandlab was called Sonar. When Bandlab acquired Sonar, they stripped away many of the plugins I have shown. Now that Bandlab is reintroducing Sonar I suspect some of these plugins will be added once again. I don't know which ones will be added. I think we will find out more as we get closer to the release date.

I hope I can buy it outright. I have no interest in a subscription because I also use Studio One and Mixcraft. I also hope that it's affordable and not more than Studio One.
